Dawn (caveatlector) I remember that from Texas. I got asked if I wanted a coke and then asked what kind?? Totally threw me for a loop once I realized they meant more than regular or diet!

I grew up in northern ireland where lemonade comes in two options: "white" (clear) or brown. Asking for "white" lemonade when travelling often resulted in puzzled looks.

Are all casseroles called hotdish in Minnesota?"

I've always been raised to understand that pretty much anything you put in what is traditionally called a "casserole dish" is a hotdish. Growing up hotdish usually consisted of a form of meat, noodles, and some kind of cream soup. Tater tot hotdish is Minnesota's state dish (and if not, it should be).

I have.... :p Someone needs to teach the Scots how to make beer. Or maybe they should just stick to making whisky.

message 8318: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I think we should just convince them to leave the beer to the Irish and Belgians. Whiskey is too important to have them diverting their attention away from it!! :)

This might be something recent, I haven't been back to Texas for years but when I was living there coke was coke (or co'-cola as old-timers would say) and a large majority at the time drank Dr. Pepper (which i have found most europeans find disgusting) anyway.

Dr Pepper certainly gives both Irn Bru and Tizer a run for their money.

Though to be fair, I find most soft drinks too damn sweet.

Sceadugenga Margaret wrote: "Someone needs to teach the Scots how how to make beer...."

In all fairness once you sift through the industrial swill (like Tenants god forbid...)there are some good Scottish beers:

FRAOCH
TRAQUAIR JACOBITE ALE
ORKNEY SKULL SPLITTER (based on the name and label we could even make this the "official" beer of the A&M HF Group :D :D)

just to name a couple.

As an Irishman living in New Hampshire, I am ashamed to admit that the US could teach us a lot about craft and quality brews (on the East coast anyway).

To add to Sceadugenga's list, I would also mention Innis & Gunn's ales as Scottish beer worthy of mention. Also, it's true that Tenants lager is on a scale with bud lite, the "80 shilling" they used to do wasn't bad back in the day.

Yes. I do like L&P...especially since they changed the recipe back so it tastes more like the original. They made it way too sweet in the 1980s-90s.

The original was mineral water from Paeroa, mixed with lemon juice and then lightly aerated. It's full name was Lemon & Paeroa, typical Kiwis shortened it to L&P and that become its name after it was purchased by Coca-Cola.

Sceadugenga Here's a question for the UK / Commonwealth gang. This morning an image popped into my head of an old TV show I vaguely remember watching as a child when I lived in the UK in the early '70's. It had to do with Saxons and vikings and I believe it was called "The Raven and the Cross" or something like that. There was even a catchy little tune that went "....who will win the battle the raven or the cross." Now is this a hallucination due to a lack of morning caffeine or did this really exist? I haven't had time to Google or look anywhere else yet, so i thought I'd throw it out there.
