I kind of hate it when people from overseas say the Aussie accent is lazy or sounds like a drawly version of a Kiwi. It shows an ignorance towards our culture. Aussies always find that because of our isolation, nobody really knows anything about us..or wants to.lol!!
Saying our accent is lazy or like a Kiwi is like saying the British accent is lazy or sounds like the Welsh. Which British accent would they mean? there are many, some Brit accents are lazy and some sound like the Welsh, others are not.
Yes, there are accents in my country too that are lazy. No doubt. But there are also Aussie accents that (as Sceadugenga noted) don't sound too dissimilar to a well spoken British accent. There are also accents in Australia (Melbourne and Adelaide) that sound very much like New Zealanders. Sometimes even I have trouble working out if someone is from Melbourne or is a Kiwi now living in Australia.
Even in America you have such a vast array of accents. So it always surprises me a little when someone thinks we all sound the same.
It isn't that they have heard an Aussie accent and feel that it sounded Kiwi or sounded lazy. Some of our accents definitely fit those descriptions. What makes me grimace is when people from overseas think that we ALL sound like that when all they are hearing is one of our many accents.
Not too many countries in the world have a population that all sound the same.
I'll confuse the hell out you Terri, if we ever get to speak together. I was born and raised in NZ, and now live in Melbourne. :D
I have often wondered what you would sound like! Seeing as the Melbourne environment cultivates that kind of accent anyway, I would guess you'd sound exactly like you did when you 'got off the boat'. :D
Oddly enough, I sound more Aussie than Kiwi. It's only when I pronounce certain words that people go "Oooo. I didn't know you're a Kiwi."Fish and Fridge are dead giveaways, apparently.
I haven't been here for a while. The wife keeps me busy, watching TV (long sigh). We have started the second Season of Vikings (rooting for Lagertha to whip that daughter of Brunilda off the screen) and We have started The White Queen. Not a fan of Phillipa Gregory (sorry, I a am an heterosexual male) but great production anyway. And some other shows like Shetland and Continuum.I'll keep You posted anyway.
Oh, don't blame your hetero status for not liking Gregory. You'd be surprised how many hetero men post in this group saying they like the books...yeah..I know...wtf?? lol.. :DI don't like the book or the tv series. I won't touch the books (they stand for everything I don't like in my reading) and I find the tv series painful to watch.
*peeking out from behind the curtain* Uh....I really liked both the Series and the book. *quickly ducks back*
Haha! I think we have plenty of people in this group that break all kids of stereotypes. And that's cool! We should all read what we like without being shamed for it.
Sorry, I have tried before. I even read the whole of Outlander but couldn't stand that every 3 pages a man ripped his shirt and the author indulged in describing every single one of the muscles of his chest and his arms. It could have been a great book otherwise. Am I too homophobic? Or is it a bad book and I am right?

I don't know how anybody can deny that that series is a romance series. But some women do deny it.
The reason most women love it is for the graphic sex and sexual tension between the characters. there is no denying what the books are, women need to just embrace it as romance and be proud. lol.
It isn't for me...obviously. ;D
Alicja wrote: "Haha! I think we have plenty of people in this group that break all kids of stereotypes. And that's cool! We should all read what we like without being shamed for it."Exactly.
For myself, I may have strong opinions on what I do and don't like, but I would never judge someone for reading the kind of books I don't like.
People often mistake a strong opinion on a book, for a judgement of them if they like or don't like that same book.
Nope. I would never. As most of you know, I am a steadfast advocate of people being entitled to speak freely on books without fear of being judged for their feelings on them.
:D ^ ^ Like that Roo Warrior, we're all adults (mostly....) & things should be said as it is, taken at face value & no need to get upset with each other.
Perhaps it's because we're of a diffo generation, one where as a kid you oft heard the word NO - you cant have x,y & z!! :)

It looks familiar but I don't feel like digging through records to make sure. In any case...great album.

And while I agree that the first book is a bit on the romancy side, the following books tend to get away from that. The problem with trying to categorise this series is that's it's many things: romance, historical fiction, fantasy, military, and that's why romance readers won't admit to it being a romance. It's got a lot of sex, and while it doesn't shy away from sex, it's not all lovey-dovey either.
And it should be noted that it does have a large male fan base.

Now the music in my iPod is different when I go for a run: Janelle Monaé (I love her), Megadeth, Carrie Underwood. And my big Progressive Rock music collection is sleeping somewhere in the house. Great, great album I agree.
Megadeth & Carrie Underwood.....that's some serious diversity right there, Carlos. :)
I was really into Megadeth, Metallica,Iron Maiden between 11 and 18 years old. Now i'm more of an Anathema, VAST fan.And I admit that i listen to Royals from time to time. Such shame. I've betrayed my metalhead principles.
Derek wrote: "Megadeth & Carrie Underwood.....that's some serious diversity right there, Carlos. :)"Yeah! That's me. Five years ago I was a classicalhead. Mozart, Wagner, Dvorak in my house, my car and my morning run. It took me a couple of years of my life but somehow I returned to my AC/DC normalcy.

Its 27 F here in Michigan with snow on the ground. Then Thursday's supposed to be sunny and 65!
Darcy wrote: "I'm a fan of the series. And while I agree that the first book is a bit on the romancy side..."Me too. But I think that even if they are "romancy", because they are! , I can tolerate that because I like the style of the author; her writing is highly entertaining and often amusing.

Yes. What Bobby says. The White Queen series.

Can't help you there, Danielle. Maybe one of the members knows of a fantasy group that fits your description.

You know how some of us were talking about accents the other day? This is a fun video to go with that convo.A brilliant video called:
A tour of accents across the British Isles performed in a single, unedited take.

Um, yeah, kind of lol. Free food??? I'm there. Yum.
Danielle, I am in SciFi and Fantasy Book Club and there are awesome discussions there. There is also Sword and Laser, its ok but I don't enjoy it as much as the first one but it may be more your speed so test it out.I also just formed a group Sci-Fi & Fantasy Girlz, really small since it was started less than a week ago but its there to read and discussion sci fi and fantasy written by women. We'll see if it grows or ends up dead with so many other groups but you are welcome to try us out.
And now I am going to fall asleep with my clothes on. Tax season is officially over (or it will be on two hours but I don't care, I've finished all my left overs and extended those that need extension so that's left for another day). I think I'll hibernate for the next week or so...
