I used to spend my Saturdays thinking about Shirley Temple. Saturday mornings that is, when one (of the three!!!) TV stations we got ran her films. Ah, the Olden Days :0)

I LOVE that movie. Some great lines in it that I quote all the time "I wish I were dead with my back broken" spoken by the one and only Humphrey Bogart.
One of the last of the Golden Era of Motion Pictures stars. Are there any left? She pretty successful post movie life - unlike so many of our current child stars
I don't think many child stars have done well, it's just a bit more dramatic these days. I was always impressed that Shirley managed to have a normal, happy life after Hollywood.

I never appreciated Humphrey Bogart. I understand he was a good actor, but I didn't like him. He gave me the creeps.I liked dean Martin though, and Rock Hudson. Doris Day (I think all these people are gay..??..). Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren and then a whole bunch others that I never knew the names of who am not remembering now off the top of my head.
Out of everyone you mentioned, only Rock Hudson was gay. And what did you watch Bogart in that gave you the creeps?? Can't have been Sabrina... :)
She was an early friend of the gay community because of Rock Hudson but I'm pretty sure there was nothing about her being gay in the biography I read. She had quite a few husbands if I recall right.
Oh well. That's a shame. I thought she was one of the few women of Hollywood that came out. I thought I read something many years ago about her being not gay exactly, but bisexual.
Now I have to reprogram myself to seeing Doris as a hetero. that's going to be weird after all these years. :D
Is he really? Wow. I love the old stuff. And what ever happened to all the old Christmas animated movies, they were so good. I love a good old black and white, preferably with Audrey. But I loved the Shirley Temple movies, Lassie and the like. They don't make em like that any more, lol.

The "Ugly" of the trio as I remember, he's like nearly 100 isn't he! (Goes & looks it up - 98 acc to wiki) :0 Quizz questions are like so EASY these days

Petrified Forest he was pretty creepy...
Doris Day started The Doris Day Animal League. It makes a lot of sense to me that the only constant love she could count on during a Hollywood career was a pet. Good for her for giving back in a big way. Spouse and I contribute. Her fund works to change animal treatment laws.

Haha, its the opposite for me. I was scared of Dean Martin as a child but loved me some Bogart. (still don't like DM)
Alicja wrote: "Yeah, I agree Doris Day seems to be straight. Now, Greta Garbo was a totally hot lez."The love of Garbo's life/bane of her existence was John Gilbert. She turned to women fully after him I believe. Although she'd had dalliances with women before him too.
And yes, Doris Day is straight (as far as the public knows). BUT she's a huge gay icon. And like Dawn said, she was one of the first celebrities to befriend the gay community. Her and Rock Hudson were bff's.
Dawn wrote: "Ah, we can't count out kids. I met a grandfather the other day who had a weekly movie night with his grandson of 3 or 4 and they always watched classic movies. They were both very big Dean Martin fans"That's amore, Dawn! ;)
lolI love Dean Martin. It's gonna be a nice song to have stuck in my head all day! Thanks Simona. :)
Aww that's lovely. I have 12 red roses for my wife which I will leave for her before I go to work tomorrow morning. This may also stop her from saying " what more books?" When my amazon order for Stormbird, The Pagan Lord and Donna Tartt's Golfinch arrive on the doorstep about the same time. She knows me soooo we'll after 34 years of marriage. ;)
I was gobsmacked today when a young (22) lad at work said he'd been to see Drake ( a rapper apparently) in concert. I joked "did you see him in Plymouth? "What do you mean he said?" You know I said Drake, Plymouth, Plymouth Ho.A blank look. "Why Plymouth Ho." Was the reply. "Francis Drake", "the Spanish fleet" "bowls" Still nothing, not a glimmer.
I gave up. I can't believe he has never heard of Drake and lives in England.
What the heck are they teaching in English schools, Haydn?I'm shocked but not really surprised. History seems to be a severely neglected subject in schools in all countries these days.
He probably knows how to Tweet, Text, Happy Bird etc but knows nothing of his ancestors or what they did. A sad state of affairs but as you say not uncommon these days, am I the only one in this country who watches The History channel? Lol

Aw. Red roses. Aren't you a good hubby. :)

I had friends decades ago who went through University and got teaching degrees. They used to be all fired up like cult members about how every generation of teachers that completes their degree is taught a new way of teaching.
Their new way of teaching when they were getting through Uni was that subjects like History were unnecessary and that it was 'proven' that subjects like history do not contribute anything to a child's learning. I used to argue black and blue with them.
They were brain washed. Once they get taught something in Uni it becomes gospel.
They do not understand that a country's history is important to a country's cultural fabric.
irritating.
First Shirley Temple, then Sid Caesar... now Ralph Waite has crossed over. To those who don't know, he was Pa Walton in The Waltons. In the last few years he has played a recurring role as Jackson Gibbs, the father of Jethro in "NCIS".
Haydn wrote: "He probably knows how to Tweet, Text, Happy Bird etc but knows nothing of his ancestors or what they did. The original one is hardly history at all, mainly stupid, reality type shows. But H2 is like old school history channel with actual history programs. That's the one I watch, at least one a week.
Margaret wrote: "First Shirley Temple, then Sid Caesar... now Ralph Waite has crossed over. To those who don't know, he was Pa Walton in The Waltons. In the last few years he has played a recurring role as Jackso..."He was so good in NCIS. It will be sad not to see him anymore.
Allie wrote: "Alicja wrote: "Yeah, I agree Doris Day seems to be straight. Now, Greta Garbo was a totally hot lez."The love of Garbo's life/bane of her existence was John Gilbert. She turned to women fully aft..."
According to her biographers (and Wikipedia since I went on there to confirm), her affair with John Gilbert lasted only a short time and was over-publicized by the studio (there are even people questioning whether the whole thing was a studio set-up). She has had affairs or close friendships with a few men but is tied with many more women. Some of the men she could have possibly had affairs with are after Gilbert. However, there is much more proof, such as letters, of her affairs with women and very little of the men.
It is believed that regardless of whether she was bisexual or lesbian it seems that Mercedes de Acosta was the love of her life. They remained "friends" for over 30 years, there are 181 letters between them, only 87 made public.
Lastly, in her words she wrote the following to another woman who she had a prior affair with but who later became pregnant:
"We cannot help our nature, as God has created it. But I have always thought you and I belonged together."
Regardless of whether she was either bisexual or lesbian, she definitely did not turn to women because of Gilbert (that is such a tired and false stereotype).
Oh my gosh, sorry! I didn't mean it to sound like he TURNED her! Lol. I know she was attracted to both sexes throughout her life. I've always heard that they had a mad, passionate (but tumultuous) affair that left both of them damaged during and after it ended.
Allie wrote: "Oh my gosh, sorry! I didn't mean it to sound like he TURNED her! Lol. I know she was attracted to both sexes throughout her life. I just know what I have read in biographies and I think what came out of the letters between Garbo and de Costa is that they had an on and off 30 year affair. And that the whole Gilbert thing seemed to play out a lot in public, especially since Garbo seemed to be such a private person, that it was more staged or made to seem more than it was as a publicity stunt by the studio and a way of Garbo remaining in the closet. But we'll never know the real truth, all we can do is look at the historical evidence.

Since I'm now close to thirty and haven't had a steady relationship since hmmm 20?, I know several people who think I'm secretly a lesbian. I date, I just have zero interest in being in a relationship. I'm much too selfish and once I move into my own place again, its going to be fabulous and no one will be allowed in, least of all a messy boy! Plus, out of 12 grandkids, I'm the only one not tied down in a marriage/an engagement/rugrats running around, so I think they all wonder. I've been questioned before. Which is fine if it gets them to leave me alone! :)

Its like if we want anything but to be a young bride and mother there must be something wrong with us. Ugh, I hate people like that! And then they think that it is their place to comment on it too.
I know! Society thinks we've come so far since say, the 50s but really the "ideal" woman is married, barefoot and pregnant. Oh you know they have to comment!!!! They HAVE TO!!!!
That's another thing I always get hock for. I'm vehement about not wanting kids. I didn't even play house or with dolls as a kid! STRANGERS have told me that "I'm an incomplete woman and that I should be ashamed of not bringing forth god's children" oy vey. That's a whole other argument!
We get that too, even from lesbians sometimes! We have had friends of ours, a lesbian couple, tell us we just have to have kids because we won't know the joy of raising a family. They have swallowed the hetero (no offense) Kool-Aid and they want the 2 kids, a dog, and a picket fence. I'm just glad my gf can't accidentally knock me up (or me her).
Lol "the joy of raising a family". Yeah, cuz every married with children couple I've ever known looks so thrilled all the time. No offense taken. No me gusta that flavor of Kool-Aid :D
I had similar experiences. I am married. No kids though.I married later on. My twenties were taken up with short term relationships with boys, lots of dating and having lovers. Only with men. I am hetero all the way.
Those who were not privy to my dating life assumed I was single because I was lez. It didn't matter how wrong they were or how many of my boyfriends they met over the years, they still wanted to believe their own judgements.
If you aren't married and yapping about having babies it means you aren't straight.
When my 'boyfriend' asked me to marry him and we then got married (my now husband) I guess that was when they finally realised I was definitely into dudes.
People making assumptions like that infuriates me. I am hetero, always have been, but I am single and in my 40s. So people have assumed that I am a lesbian. Nope. What happened was that I was sexually assaulted in my 20s and shut down. I wasn't about to let anyone near me at all. I wasn't trusting anyone with my body or my life. It took me damn near 25 years to heal from the mental trauma.
I'm single by inclination. Been double often enough, but I always knew I'm a single at bottom, temporarily doubled. Now I feel I've done the double enough and pretty much know I'm a committed single for the rest of my life. --Had trouble getting people to believe that. 'The right one will come along'. Right ones have come along a few times, and that was great, but rightest for me is single.

The original Sabrina is one of those fabulous movies too. Audrey Hepburn was one of a kind.
