Portia This discussion is making me think of the people who hate cats -- ailurophobes. Or those who love them -- ailurophiles, and how my cat-adoring self said, "Well, of course," when I found out that the scientific name for the Giant Panda is

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_panda

black and white cat-footed. Duh, of course I'd fall in love with something cat-footed. Something else I find interesting is that the namers chose the Greek words in classifying panda instead of "felipedi negroblanco", or words to that effect ;-) It's all Bao Bao to me :-)

Maybe we are talking different birds - but here in Utah we definately have a bird we call a magpie. extra long tail, black/purple back and white chest. I don't like them, they chase away all the song birds!

message 6604: by Portia (new)

Portia I checked, and The New Stokes Field Guide to Birds: Eastern Region doesn't even list them in the index. No Magpies here in the East.

I would give my left tit for a load of that silage right now. :) haha! Any kind of hay is few and far between in our area currently. What hasn't been snapped up by people with more money and more buying power than us, is too far away for us and would cost a fortune in transport costs.
If they drought declare our shire then we will get transport rebates which is good. Our Mayor is in the process of trying to get our Shire drought declared. I don't think it will be long before he makes it happen.

The trauma from those bushfires must be like a cancer to the mind of Victorians and New South Welshmen. They move so fast that I can understand their deep seated fears. As you know, being from the east coast of Australia too, bushfires can be on people's doorsteps before they even know a fire has shifted direction.

Oh how wonderful that you got to watch Peregrine falcons fighting.
Have you ever seen eagles, ie Sea Eagles, Wedge tails, doing it? Fighting I mean, not 'doing it'..hehe.
Pretty awesome seeing those big powerful birds swinging each other around.

I have never seen a Peregrine in the flesh. I have been keeping an eye out for them here on the farm, but they are the one raptor I am yet to id here.

Terri | 19576 comments Our Magpies are different to the bird other countries would call a Magpie.

This is the Australian Magpie. They don't collect stuff or anything and are quite a big bird.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Darcy, I'm also not a fan of birds. I watched that horror movie, Birds, when I was too young to watch horror movies and I now especially hates flocks. I'm fine with images and flightless birds, just don't deal well with being around anything that can actually take flight and breathe at the same time.

In my uncle's infinite wisdom, he had me watch that film when I was ten. You're probably onto something.

message 6610: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments I can't believe you are not drought declared already!! Fingers crossed that happens quick. I would get a photo of how much of it is in the paddocks, but that would seem cruel! Try no to give away too many of your body parts on the mean time, lol. But definitely keep your sense of humour.

No we haven't seen any other birds of prey fighting. We have been very fortunate to have come across a few now close up. They are a magnificent bird, god I love them!!!! They are so beautiful. My brother was in the army for 20 years and his regimental mascot was a wedge tail. She was a fairly cantankerous old love, lol. He was in a cavalry unit, and their motto was "courage". It seemed very fitting I must say. She had rank, and was always on parade with them. It was a huge event when she passed away. Fortunately though when they replaced her they had learned a lot more about Interaction and care involved in that type of bird, and HIS role was much more interactive than hers had been. We came across several eagles in Tasmania that had been shot and were in care. I was very angry about that and still don't understand that mentality.

I watched "A Night To Remember" with my mother on a TV show called "Saturday Night at the Movies." When the ship hit the iceberg, she kept telling me to go to bed and I kept insisting that I was a big girl (8 years) and could handle it. When I was in college, I saw "The Poseidon Adventure." It took Spouse 25 years and a significant anniversary to get me on a cruise. I am not what one could call a sailing enthusiast :P

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments This last couple of days has been the kind of winter storm I really like. We have had 2 ft (.67m) of snow up in the mountains and rain here in the valleys - I don't have to shovel rain :)

The is storm is supposed to continue for another couple of days and dump a total of 4 ft of new snow in the mountains.

That still won't catch up the snow pack though. We need about 3 or 4 more storms like this in the next month :D

What a cool story about the Eagle mascot.

yeah, some lowlifes shoot eagles because they kill their lambs or pets or whatever. As you would know, it is illegal, but the world is full of lowlifes who have no conscience.

Allison | 1704 comments Aaaahhhhhhh!!!! I got a new phone and was saving my old phone because it had over a 100 pictures on it that I wanted transferred over to my new one. I thought I put it into my purse so I knew I would have it when I went into the cell carrier's store. Well its not in there. I've taken everything out of my purse three friggin' times and torn the house apart looking for it. Even moved all the furniture in case it fell down the couch or something. Its GONE. I've called everyone I've been in their car/house with in the past few weeks and no luck. Once again, it was every pic I have of my nephew (I'm sure I could get those from my sisters phone, it'll just take a while) and pics of my cat Lucy who died last year. That's really what will kill me. After the whole tablet debacle, the universe truly doesn't want me to have pictures of anything. Not happy with life right now :(

Portia Based on the news and weather reports, an eventuality that Scarlatt O'Hara never considered is threatening Tara. Georgia is closing down ahead of the second ice storm this year. We here in the Old Dominion are being told to be prepared as well.

Her movies were old when I was a kid and it was only that they played on tv (Saturday Matinee movies) that I knew who she was.

message 6647: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments kids today probably don't, but there are enough of us sentimental people left... and, the Turner Movie Channel is around...

message 6648: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Ah, we can't count out kids. I met a grandfather the other day who had a weekly movie night with his grandson of 3 or 4 and they always watched classic movies. They were both very big Dean Martin fans!

message 6649: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I've been obsessed with old movies since about 9 years old (hence my profile pic). Nobody else I knew watched them, I just stumbled onto the TCM channel. So maybe not a huge percentage of moms out there will find their kid glued to the TV for silent movie Sundays, like my mom found me but they're out there :)

I feel a "Heidi" and "the Bachelor & the Bobby Soxer" mini marathon coming on...

message 6650: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I used to love old movies. The i went off them for years. Lately I have been craving them again. there are so many good movies made before the 60's. (not that there are none after, but I class pre 60's as the old ones).
