Books from the Book Depository for me. They don't charge postage. :)

I don't know for sure of course but I wouldn't be surprised if shipping isn't tucked away in their price. :) I've ordered from them but it takes 3 weeks from where they are in the UK to the East Coast of the U.S.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments If it is, their books are even more ridiculously cheap, Jane. Because what I bought was often as much as 50% cheaper than buying them here.

My books all arrived inside the specified time period too. One lot only took 4 days!

Hey Darcy. I recall you mentioning that you have a tablet. I'm thinking of buying one of those soon. It's high time I got some kind of wireless device.
If you don't mind my asking, what kind do you have? Or what kind would you recommend? If anyone else has any advice for me, please weigh in. When it comes to modern technology, I need all the help I can get.

Allison | 1704 comments Hey Derek.

After all my photo deleting troubles, you all know I have a tablet. Its the Surface RT. Perfect size. Loved everything about it until I "upgraded" to windows 8.1 but once I calmed down, its really not so bad. I now have the kindle and nook apps on it and I'm finding that fun. It cost me $375 but that price wasn't bad compared to an iPad or smaller tablet. Like I said its the perfect size (especially for watching shows online or Netflix ~ which I do quite often). Happy shopping!

As a beginner, id recommend a Stone tablet

Terri | 19576 comments I know you're asking darcy, derek, but I am piping in to say..;)

I have an Acer tablet. Not the new ones though. A couple years old. I can't give feedback on this Acer anymore as the new Acers are what you would be looking at if you were checking out Android tablets.

I like Acer though...well..until the Windows 8.1 upgrade on my new Acer laptop spazzed out the wifi and now it doesn't work properly. Even with patches from Acer applied. :/

So cheap. I remember when I bought The Count of Monte Cristo from them. It was between $4 and $5 (about the same in USD). It amazed me how they can make money by not charging shipping.
Not complaining though! ;)

It takes 14 days for a book to get to me from The Book Depository. Sometimes a couple days more. Never less than 14 days for me.

message 6515: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks so much Allie, Mark & Andy. I appreciate the feedback. I will look into those options.

Since the tax return is on its way, $375 doesn't sound too bad, Allie. That's around the price range I'm looking for. Thanks again!

message 6519: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Don't worry. With tablets like Acer and Samsung you never have to go near Microsoft at all as they run on the Android systems. :)
The Surface tab is the Microsoft tab.

(I have Microsoft on my laptop)

lol Told yous Samsung Stone tablet...... thought we'd have had to send a trawler out for that one!

Nice with the tax refund too Derek, always best spend a windfall, kinda like a bonus init.

message 6521: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Derek, I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and I love it. I have a friend who just bought a Samsung Tab 3 and she's a bit non-tech. She finds it very easy to use.

When I was researching tablets I also looked at the Google Nexus and it got really good reviews though I've never tried it.

And last but not least I say ipad only because I have a few co-workers who are obsessed and absolutely love them. Though I am not a fan of the apple proprietary stuff.

message 6522: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Omg.... there's so many!!!! I just walked into Best Buy and they figured out which one would suit to what I was looking for. Good luck Derek!

message 6523: by [deleted user] (new)

@Andy: Tax return time is my Christmas. It's the only time of year I have money to spend on computer stuff, so I'm pumped.

@Dawn: Thank you, Dawn. I'll definitely keep that Samsung Tab 3 in mind, as I'm non-tech and would prefer something easy. I've looked at ipads, but like most apple stuff, they seem overpriced in comparison with other brands.

@Allie: Thank you, Allie. Believe me, I'm going to need that luck, but ya'll are a big help. I appreciate it!

message 6524: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments No problem Derek. I'm not a computer/technology person either so if I were reading this thread now and I didn't have my tab already, my head would spin.

Just as long as you keep speaking to us after you buy one and (gasp!) don't like it :)

message 6525: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Hey Derek, Sorry so late. I had planned on getting a Samsung, but was gifted an Ipad mini. I like it, but I wouldn't pay for it. All my research, and everyone I know who have a Samsung love it. So, for the price - I'd go with it between those two options.

I don't know much about the others though, but everyone seems pretty happy, so I think it'll come down to price, and what you're looking for your tablet to do for you :)

message 6526: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I don't want to put down iPad unnecessarily. People love their iPads.
I wanted to add my feedback on the iPad. My hubby has an iPad (the latest one) for work and he hates it.
He put in a request for a work laptop too because he hated using the ipad.

I have used his ipad to try and do the usual things I do on my Andoird tab and laptop, and I found it annoying. partly I found it annoying because I cut my Tablet teeth with android, I am used to the way they run and I find iPad needlessly complicated and a bit sluggish.

Like Derek has noticed. You do get more bang for your buck with other tablets compared to iPad.

iPad has the best apps though. Which sucks for the android user. ;)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments I have both iPad and Kindle and both have their advantages and disadvantages. I heard lots of good things about Samsung tablets, so that may be my next tablet purchase in the quest for the perfect tablet.

message 6529: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I think it will be mine too. I like the look of the Samsung. And the screen.

message 6530: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments I've heard only good things about the samsung too. I've had too Kobo's, but the ipad is my first real tablet. The second kobo was still a little too early in the game. I must say I love my ipad but it's also all I've ever really used too. I bought Chris one last year, and sometimes it's a bit like : duck and weave, in case he throws it out the window. At first he hated it, but he has definitely gotten better with it but still very frustrating at times. Because of his work his finger pads are quite coarse and hard so I find the ipad can be unresponsive if it doesn't always get a nice warm contact. Plus there is the fact he needs to get used to the idea that the apps are just that and sometimes just dont bloody work right. I like things to be simple, so for me it works. Sounds like everyone has had mostly positive experiences with the samsung though, so all I can say is good luck Derek. I'm hopeless at making decisions, lol. I wonder if that's why we were together so long before we got married........

message 6531: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I have the ASUS android and have been very pleased with it. My computer expert son chose the ASUS over the other available tablets. I dropped it and broke some kind of cable. I could get only half a screen. I asked my son to fix it, not intending to ever, ever admit that I had dropped it on the concrete steps. He took one look at it and said, "Dropped it, didn't you?" I said, " I might have let it roll off the bed." He didn't believe me so I had to tell him the truth. My punishment is that the ASUS is in for repair, and I miss it.

Damn Andy! That looks pretty bad. I think I'd be heading inland. Do you live close to the coast?

message 6537: by Andy (new)

Andy | 1511 comments I live about 4 miles away from where the waves were breaking over the top but on the far side well away from the storm force side. It's about 1/2 mile walk to the sea for me in about 2 directions, but im on top of a hill so clear of it all really - the pics show the beach road - main road between weymouth & isle of portland which is basically now closed again as hightide approches, jus as the wind is picking up again too :) You normally get a few storms every decade or so but we've had a few now in the space of a month, so no time to repair defences nor let it drain away again hence the accumulative effects where the shingle that was once a fair few feet high is now flattened or dragged back out to sea leaving everything wide open co-inciding with the high tides at this time of year.

The second clip is further down & goes over the sea defences & then over the top of the chesil bank which we use to do shuttle runs up n down training back in the day! Its a big ol' bank I can assure you!

Derek, you could also consider an ASUS Transformer Pad. It has a keyboard, which sometimes can be useful, and works on Android. My son bought himself one of these and he's enthusiast.

We had some showers last night. Not enough to get grass growing, but at least it is something.
