Sorry about that. I learned my lesson to back up the hard way, I lost an essay for a final grade as an undergrad two days before it was due. Thankfully, I was able to pay a dude $200 to pull my laptop's hard drive and he found the essay just in time. I had a friend who wasn't as fortunate and who lost his Masters thesis and had to prolong his grad school stay for another year and re-write the entire thing. Most of us have been there at one point or another, all we can do is (hopefully) learn from our experiences.

That sucks!!!!!! Wow.

The thing is about mine though is that, I don't ever use it for pics or anything. I just happened to have my tab on me @ my nephews birthday party so I snapped a few pics. Then, when my computer genius was trying to fix it for me, I didn't know he was going to erase everything and start over. Didn't say anything to me! Good thing I didn't have files I needed on there! But then today at best buy, the guy was confused because he said all my pics should have uploaded to sky cloud but didn't. Had they, I could have retrieved them. So it looks like my tablet was against me from the very beginning!

Side note: I had to get a new phone today. My phone has been on the fritz for months but I didn't want a smartphone or something else all "tecky". Salesgirl said my phone was so old, hey no longer made batteries for it (which was what I needed). So got a smartphone and......I have no idea how to use this thing. I don't even recognize the name. I'm hopeless.

More side note: one sliver of a silver lining: best buy guy put the kindle and nook apps on my tablet for me so now my upgraded tablet has E-reader capabilities. Yay! But knowing me, I probably wont like that anyways :/

message 6404: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm hopeless right along with you, Allie. I've never had a smart phone, and get clowned by friends on an everyday basis because of it. That's alright, though. My old school flip phone costs me a grand total of $16.00 a month. Take that tech nerds. ;)

message 6405: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Don't worry about the "smart" part of the phone Allie. As long as you can figure out how to put in some contacts and send a text......

message 6406: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) My phone costs me way too much, no where near $16...that's for sure. As soon as my contract is up I'll be going for something cheaper!!

There's enough Wifi around that I don't think I'll bother with the data package next time. Should save me a fair amount!

You're ahead of me mate; I haven't even got a mobile. Now, I do have an itouch and a tablet, both were gifts though, and I can text with them using wifi.

@Dawn our wee country has the most expensive wireless rates in the Western world. It's insane how much we pay for a service that already had the infrastructure in place prior to mobile phones being a common item.

I have absolutely no cell phone, no tablet, no itouch, no eReader, only an aging PC, which is fine for my needs. Maybe someday I'll get a cell for emergencies only, but who knows?

message 6410: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't have a landline phone, so I have to have some kind of cell so that my family and employers can get ahold of me. They do come in handy in emergencies. There's been a couple of times when my car broke down in the middle of nowhere. I was very thankful to have a cell in those situations.

Yes, it's insane how much we have to pay. Thus my decision to not have the data package next time. Especially when Mark there is saying how little he pays!!!

message 6412: by Alicja (new)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments I don't know how I ever lived without my smartphone. I'm working 2 jobs right now and my hours are really odd. My employers text me all the time. Friends do too, the only way we've been keeping in touch recently. The gf sends me pics of her day and updates me on her happenings. And I can access GR through it. Plus, I never get lost anymore after having convenient access to google maps. Plus, recently I scanned and email documents right from my phone while standing at a red light.

But the down side is that I never have alone time or quiet time anymore.

Andy | 1511 comments Technology eh!

Miss the good ol' days when as a student you used to queue outside a phone box for hours waiting to make a call home either that or walk miles to the next one & find it vandalised :)

Better still, when you started yer first job & off you go out on a jolly, finish early, down the pub at lunchtime & NOBODY could get hold of you until the next day to send you elsewhere on a breakdown job.

Happy Days indeed, dont yer jus hate mobiles & technology :)

Dawn (caveatlector) Alicja wrote: "But the down side is that I never have alone time or quiet time anymore...."

This I don't like, I hate being accessible 24 hours a day.
I have a phone for my convenience only, so I tend to be difficult to get a hold of unless I'm at work. :)

Oh I don't know about that. You should go into the Goodreads Feedback or Goodreads Librarian group from time to time. People get real hornery in there!

I always get stomach cramps at the mere thought that I need to post something in those groups.

Those groups aside....when I first started dabbling in groups on GR I found people quite snappy and uncaring.
In so many groups On GR, people post because they want to say something, they don't post in groups because they are interested in what others are going to say.
I feel that in A&M, members are genuinely interested in each others opinions and thoughts.
Then there are the people in GR groups who make others feel like an idiot. They speak down to people regularly. And think if you don't know as much as them about books/genre/the GR website etc etc..then they shouldn't waste their time on you.
I have seen it all on GR. It is why I am only in this group. (and the Librarian and Feedback groups for other reasons)

message 6419: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments I think one of the best things about the group is the diversity of opinions and everyone can still get on. I think that is because if a few things, the maturity of the group for starters, and the fact that you guys keep a tight rain on stirrers. Everyone's opinions are soooo different, ie Stormbird, yet we can a still all chat about it. That's what I want from GR and I get it from this group. The fact that it leads to interesting people and more recommendations is a bonus, too! :))

Stirrers don't stick around for long. Usually because I stir them back with a kick up the pants. :D

We've had a couple people who came into the group with the singular intention to stir up trouble. Some were trolls looking to undermine our equilibrium for entertainment. Some were trolls who are fans of hist fantasy or hist romance and they wanted to engage in verbal battles regarding the books we cater to.

Really though, it has been a long time since we last had trolls working the group. I think also, the bigger the group grows, the harder it is to undermine a group.

For these trouble makers, smaller groups are easier to ruin for fun. So I think, when we were smaller, we had a bigger target on our behinds.
Now, it is not so big. :)

And as for people who are just plain rude and obnoxious to others. I think, because rotten attitudes aren't the norm around here, if someone wants to be rotten, they only draw attention to themselves. If you are an a-hole to others, you will be the odd one out.

I do like it in A&M when I see gregarious and outspoken people mixing so well and in such a relaxed way with shy, self conscious people.
usually if you have lions roaring, the mice are too scared to squeak. Our mice are roarers in here too. Which is awesome. :)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments My ASUS broke! Well, I dropped it and it broke! Everything was on it: my hope of finding the NFL channel to watch all the Super Bowl Games; my current bookDerek Birks FEUD; the free books from Anne and the other people who so graciously lead me to the free grazing ranges and pools of cool water wherein I may slake my reading thirst; the android 'as you type' speller; the Christmas gift cards; the computer type stuff(don't ask because I don't know); my excuse for lying in my reading spot which is safe and secure and where the outside cannot enter. The books on my Nook are ok(I didn't drop the Nook), but I have read them. I will be upset and confused for days because my 'normal' is gone and that means I will try to find a new normal until the ASUS is fixed. The tech who works on the ASUS will find a treasure trove of books. I hope he or she is a reader.

Nah, Georgia, US. The entire state was a penal colony before we went out on our own. Send 'em all out to shovel snow!!!

message 6438: by Portia (new)

Portia Yeah, that's what I've always heard but, of course, now I can't find a link to back up what I'm saying. If I do, I'll post it.

message 6439: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Yeah. Georgia was a penal colony. A lot of the rebels from the 1745 rebellion were sent to Georgia after the rebellion was crushed.

America declaring independence is the reason Australia was colonised. Great Britain no longer had anywhere to transport criminals to.

Weeeeellll, not exactly. PA was founded by William Penn whose point was to find a place for his Quakers to worship without persecution. Same for the Puritans in MA. Maryland -- Mary Land, was given to George Calvert, Lord Baltimore as a refuge for Catholics. Many of our ancestors (mine included) came here to make a better life. This book, Where I Was From, gives one of the best explanations of the American mindset that I've read. I didn't get as far as CA, but I left PA as soon as I was able.

Dawn (caveatlector) William Penn made Philly a safe place for all religions. That's why they have so many different religious denominations there, including the Quaker House.
Very nice people, the Quakers. We learned a whole lot of interesting history from them when we were there.
