Yep, I guessed that and I was joking too...I imagine it didn't come out well!

Hello? Any Aussies still standing..... or our you all wodka'd out lol
On another note... Ingerland SHOCKING Capitulation 4-1 :( Grrrr
Oh come on mate, we are stayers, no doubt about it! We may not be standing but we are definitely in for the long haul. Lol
Andy wrote: "On another note... Ingerland SHOCKING Capitulation 4-1 :( Grrrr"Grrrr grumble grumble (as I watch the cricket on Australia Day and barrack for Ingerland. Hey, I like to have a confused identity).
Derek wrote: "That sucks, Allie. A double for me as well, please. I've heard nothing but negatives as far as windows 8 is concerned. I hope you're able to recover your pics."I've been avoiding updating to 8.1 ever since Terri talked about having all her troubles. As someone else said, I'm continuing to give that puppy wide berth. Hope you're able to get it all sorted.
@ Derek
I had some negative feelings about Windows 8 when I fistt got it, but like the switch from 2003 to 2010, I kind of got used to its quirks.

Have you tried System restore yet? ie going back to how it was at a certain date? Mind that might not work for a systems windows change? Not sure, jus a suggestion.
And dont scream at me, whats done is done I know, been there meself etc & dread "upgrades" as it usely means at least a week of piddling around trying to find stuff again.... However, now would be the time to invest in a External HDD which you can use as a back-up storage for vids/pics etc for future. cost is minimal these days & can store in the region of 2TB+.

I use a Mac and have never had any trouble while upgrading, but I still backup periodically to the Mac cloud AND to a passport device. Just in case. That's the keyword… always to be remembered before doing ANY computer upgrading… "backup". You should periodically backup the contents of your computer to an external hard drive, to the Cloud, to a passport style back up device, copy photos onto a disc, etc etc…whatever… This way you'll never lose your photos, documents, Apps, downloads, etc. even if your computer becomes corrupted. They can be reloaded back onto your computer or lap top no matter what happens.
Still, Allie, there may be a ray of hope. It may be possible to retrieve lost stuff on your computer. Sometimes it's just hidden away on the internal hard drive, parked. You can contact a computer service or guru and pay for their time. Worth a try, eh?
Also, as Andy wrote… sometimes a system restore can put you back to where you were before this fiasco.
God, I'd hate to lose my photos. Allie, your geniuses definitely deserve a flogging: always back up before making experiments!I'm using Windows 8.1 on a small Samsung notebook and it's not so bad. It has a smartphoney look, quite intuitive when (in a little while) you get used to it.
Hey everyone. Allie feels bad enough about losing her pictures. Stop picking on her about what she didn't do.
Portia wrote: "Hey everyone. Allie feels bad enough about losing her pictures. Stop picking on her about what she didn't do."Not sure what your reading Portia, can't see any post picking on anybody, all I can read is advice & the potential for recovering what "maybe" Allie hasn't lost. What Marilee & myself have suggested is factual - it is still maybe possible to recover vids & pics from a PC.
My posting is not intented to further inflame & it's all i'll say on the matter, thank you.
Portia… I don't think anyone was picking on Allie … I'm truly sorry if it sounded like that to you. I think we all feel badly for her and were offering what little we could, in the way of some practical advice. I have genuine sympathy for her situation… having learned my lesson vis a vis the importance of "backup" the hard way. I won't bore anyone with the story, but oh my… it was a painful experience.
Oh, I just got annoyed with the comments about "you shoulda done a backup." I hate being told what I shoulda done. But Allie is probably more mellow than I am.
Portia wrote: "Hey everyone. Allie feels bad enough about losing her pictures. Stop picking on her about what she didn't do."Portia, I see both sides: people trying to be helpful, and also people 'picking on her'. Since I know next to nothing about computers and have no idea what you folks are talking about most of the time about anything electronic, I'd feel like an absolute idiot.
I just want to say that, as a tech dummy, I appreciate getting advice & suggestions from people around here. I definitely need it, and I've learned a lot about computers & ereaders from members of this group. I took it as people trying to be helpful.
You remembered right, Bryn. I was planning on buying myself an ereader for Christmas, but ran into some financial hurdles. So now I'm planning on buying one when I get my tax return in a month or so.
I hope it's worth the purchase for you. I got given mine as a present; I was sort of outraged, anti-digital as I was, and left it in its box for weeks. Then I got curious... and it's a happy tale from there.
Hey Bryn..Speaking of getting suggestions..What kind of ereader do you use?
A Kindle. It's not that I push them, though. I haven't tried others, and like I say, it wasn't me that chose. I am happy with it. It's an old model with keyboard. No wish to upgrade.
Bryn wrote: "A Kindle. It's not that I push them, though. I haven't tried others, and like I say, it wasn't me that chose. I am happy with it. It's an old model with keyboard. No wish to upgrade."
I resist any of them, as far as I'm concerned. If I can't get a copy of a regular paperback or hardback, I just don't read it.
Bryn wrote: "Nobody picks on people here, or Terri well & truly jumps on them."Yep, I won't have that sh*t in here. :D
I joined an internet forum recently that deals with a hobby of mine (chicken keeping) and I am shocked at how obnoxious and rude everyone is to each other, including the moderators. Most of the mods are rude to members on a regular basis.
In my first week of making a few posts I have already been made to feel like a f##king idiot over a simple thing.
I was aghast and I sure felt pleased that since the beginning of this group I have reigned with an iron fist when it comes to people 'picking on others' or being obnoxious to others, or people not letting others have their own opinion, or people making others feel bad about having a certain opinion.
I would never in a million years allow Dawn or Darcy be rude and snappy at members (unless that member was doing something wrong). I'd be all over them like a cheap suit. :)
Definitely glad that an atmosphere has developed in A&M where people care about the way they speak to others (unless those others are people causing trouble).
To the chat about Win 8.1. Don't do it unless you have to!! Give it some more time to be worked on by Microsoft. While it is pretty to use, it causes many a problem. For me it causes problems with both my wireless and my email program (Windows Mail).
Thanks everyone for all the well wishes! No, I didn't get the vibe that anyone was "picking on me" but I definitely appreciate that Portia had my back just in case!I second Terri's "dont get windows 8.1 if you dont have to" because it sucks. There was no reason for me to even do it but I let people talk me into it (mainly for the fact that the kindle app works better on it - which is a second blow because it doesn't work on my tab anyway!).
Andy - ha.... are you speaking English man? I have no idea what 2tb+ or external HDD means :P
I meant to get to best buy today and see if one of the blue shirts could help but won't make it til tomorrow. Knowing my luck, videos and picks are gone though :( fingers crossed.
The system restore thingy is what made my tab delete everything so not sure what you're talking about, will have to ask tomorrow. I didn't have anything backed up because there's really not anything on my tablet, I just use it to go online/watch Netflix. I thought I was in good hands, ha! Silly me. I didn't even know what he was doing, when he handed over my "new and improved" tab, my picks were just gone.
Normally don't take pictures at all but my nephews birthday and Christmas just happened to be last month and I had my tablet on me :( thank goodness there wasn't anything else (although that's bad enough). I babysat him today and he made sure to give sad auntie allie lots of hugs and kisses :) almost worth it.

Never be a early adopter of anything Microsoft puts out. They are notorious for using early adopters as Beta testers :)
Don't jump so early when they bring out Windows 8.1.2 - There I've reminded you :)My kids hate it when I do that :)
Although I'm a happy Mac person, my hubby is PC man… really knowledgable and is PC guru to many of our friends ... he's expressed misgivings with Win8 and it's update… I've heard him grumbling in his den and on then phone with techs. He's mentioned his displeasure over the years with Microsoft releasing buggy system updates prematurely and usually, he'll wait awhile to upgrade, until any problems are ironed out. I read ebooks on a Kindle… I'm on my 3rd, a Paperwhite 1. Frankly, I'm not too fond of the way the touch screen works and battery life is not great unless I put it into Airplane Mode. But I do love the illuminated screen. I can read easily in low light [even in the dark] and still read well in sunlight. Amazon's lighted screen is a winner. It's possible that the new Paperwhite 2 has corrected some of the "touch" issues I have experienced. But I'm not going to buy a new one for awhile. I can live with it.
Although I don't actually enjoy e-reading, I do like the light on the Kobo Glow, and it's quite a good reader as well. Does everything I need it to. I also have an older Kobo without the light and don't really like it.
Portia wrote: "Oh, I just got annoyed with the comments about "you shoulda done a backup." I hate being told what I shoulda done. @ Allie, sorry if I have offended you, that wasn't intentionial!
Time for me to say that it was my button that got pushed, not Allie's. I've spent so much time with what we here in the US call Monday Morning Quarterbacks that I probably don't hear good advice because my brain shuts off when someone says, "What you should have done/said was ..." Luckily for me, when I hadn't been married for long a book came out explaining that many women like me simply want to hear sympathetic words as a first reaction to a problem, solutions to follow. The communication issue comes in because men like my hub spring into action with step-by-step instructions (humorously dubbed The Marshall Plan) to fix the problem. He now expresses sympathy before he tells me what I gotta do:-)And as long as Fearless Leader has used the word f***, I'm f***ing freezing and it's only going to get colder :P
Portia wrote: "Time for me to say that it was my button that got pushed, not Allie's. If there is a problem her ordered Engineer's mind turns into step-by-step practical solution with little regard for emotions or sympathy. But it is a useful mindset when quick thinking and timely practical action must be taken.
Exactly right, Alicja! My hub is a scientist who works with engineers but I am the Liberal Arts major who must completely embrace the tragic beauty of a situation before moving forward :-)
This is an exciting week--Super Bowl week! Those games played where the weather is a factor are fun to watch, especially from where I sit in my warm home. The man who put the past Super Bowl films together died. If anyone knows whether, where and when those films will be shown this year, will you please let me know?
I feel so outside of the American culture but I could never make myself care about football, even the Super Bowl.

Happy gets the credit for coming up with that name for Terri. Wasn't Fearless Leader the boss of Boris and Natasha on The Rocky and Bullwinkle show? I have a friend who grew up in Russia and she really does say "Skvee-rill" for squirrel.
Chin up Allie :-)Personally, I'm still chugging along in the Stone Age with Windows XP. It comes on when I press the button so it'll do for me.
My hubby is an engineer AND a lawyer… and I'm a very analytical person by nature, so you can imagine, problem solving usually takes precedence over sympathy, as a first reaction in our family when anyone is in a pickle. Practical suggestions are the first impulse, sympathy follows. One of the problems of the internet is that we only see the words typed into a box… we don't see the person or know much else about them. Over the years I've been messaging with folks on the internet, I've observed… you all probably have too.. how easy it is to misunderstand intentions or reactions when we don't have any verbal or visual clues.
If anyone could have seen my face when I was typing about "backup!"… you'd have seen my furrowed brow and heard my clucking… "oh, poor dear… maybe I can help… " ;>}

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, the majority of people on here are intelligent, thoughtful people, as you would expect of regular readers.
I refuse to comment on the intelligence of people whose primary concern is chickens ;)
Thank you, Happy! Seeing Dionne Sanders and Rice yesterday on Pro Bowl made me homesick to see my favorite players through the years.

No, no Simona, I wasn't offended at all. Although I do appreciate Portia on my behalf, I didn't read anything into anyone else's comments. They gave me hope that my pics were still there somewhere (unfortunately, the geek squad at best buy said they are long gone. Whatever "my" computer idiot did at home totally screwed me over, all hope lost - a bit of sarcasm there hee hee). See, we are all friends again :)
