No worries, Gallant Hero. The passage is open and the people travel the road to find food for themselves and their livestock. Our dwellings Are strong and will withstand the severe cold, but we must be wise and put the energy of the young to building food storage structures and shelters for the horses and oxen. There is a good place to sleep. So have no crossed eyebrows for me. I have my cats and a fire pit. :-)

Do I spy a black kitty w/ green eyes lurking in the background? Cute. I love when they curl up on your book. Like, hey I was reading that but I'll stop a minute because you're so dang adorable, I don't want to push you off :)
Spouse and I will remember this week. He just had to melt the ice from the garage door so he could get his car out. We have a cat perch attached to one of our windows and the cat who loves to sit on it isn't using it because the window is too cold. I think I am rethinking our plan to retire to Maine.Good news is that I am reviving all my winter comfort food recipes and learning some new ones. I am a good winter cook.
Still waiting for the zephyr.
Did anyone see the bio-fuel silo/tank blow up in New Albany, MS? Happened night before last. I live about four miles from the tank, so things were very active around here. I did not know we had a bio-fuel industry because I don't get out much. Having bio-fuel should make us politically correct, right? Just imagine all that sh-uh-stuff blowing up in the suppliers' own back yard.I love that Siamese cat! Mine was named Kitty Belle, but she got old and disappeared. If anyone has a female virgin cat, just wait until that day she does not want to be a virgin anymore! We had to give Kitty Belle a shot of Valium and she still catterwalled( sp) but in a drunken state. She would not get off my leg. What could I do for her? My son's male cat, Spaz, short for Spastic, thinks he is a dog. At six p.m. she waits by the back door because his master will come home from work through that door. Spaz will not leave my son's side until he leaves for work the next day.

Alicja, does your Maui have any tortoiseshell in her? That straight line of markings down her face i very similar to markings I've seen on some torties.
She is a squeegie punkin!
Have you ever noticed that if one has a pet, that pet is the smartest pet that ever lived? Except rabbits and chicks. It is hard to have a relationship with rabbits and baby chicks. My father used to give each grandchild a rabbit and baby chick at Easter every year. Those creatures invaribly 'ran away' within two weeks. I guess the Easter Bunny came back and reclaimed them.Is anyone going to the Olympics in Russia? Does anyone want to go? Does anyone feel afraid to go? The terrorist threat, wherever it is found, kills us slowly with fear.

I did not know we had ..."Zephyr was spayed as soon as it was medically possible. But the genetic memories remain. And learned behavior (such as litter box use) is high with Cha Cha and Z. Their mother was feral (and still keeps her distance but now inside the house) but she taught them how to flirt. I have a video of Cha Cha strutting her stuff on the mattress long after Spay Day. We had a white cat who was spayed late and she had every human male for two blocks in love with her where we used to live. One guy made her hot dogs and eggs. One day I looked across the street to see a different guy mowing his front lawn while my cat sat in his bedroom window and watched him. She used to get runny tummy because a ten-year-old (male) would give her a bowl of milk outside. I cannot make this stuff up.
But I will try to get a picture of Z on here for everyone to coo over. Put this cabin fever to good use!
I've changed my Avi to show Zephyr. I think you can also view a larger version of the picture of her on my profile page, yes? I wasn't able to remember how to edit the pic to get some of the wall above her head out but I'll work on it and then try to post it in a message. Any advice is gratefully appreciated. And, as long as I am asking for advice, how does one post more than one link in the same message? Every time I try to do that, I loose what is in the comment box.
Many thanks from the Tech No Savvy Portia.
What a joke on me. In the picture, Zephyr is sitting on the directions for the automatic garage door opener that Spouse thought was broken but was "only" frozen this morning. She is also dancing around me not only because she knows I'm talking about her but also becaue she wants me to start a fire for her. Grumpy (Spouse to me) is at work and the tiny Siamese "is freeeezing! Human do something!" back later ;-)
Your story is definitely tops! So funny. They flirt? You paint good word pictures. I see the white cat and her gentlemen, but I cannot see Cha Cha strutting on the mattress. Paint it for me, please please.Update on the bio-fuel tank explosion: There was a plume of smoke headed to Alabama. Electricity was knocked out in areas north of us but is restored today. I don't know if our neighboring state suffered any from the plume. People a mile north of me and closer to the explosion were evacuated. I guess as long as it burns they will remain evacuated. Being evacuated would drive me out of my mind. Ten years ago we had the worst ice storm ever. Trees down, no travel, electricity out for two weeks. One of my friends had a bad case of cabin fever and resorted to her four wheeler to go where no other vehicles could go--to town!
Oh, Zephyr is soooo cute!! She reminds me of Maui a bit but they also look so distinctly different. Maui is also a virgin with slutty moments, she lays down on her back and spreads her legs open and just chills like that. It is so unladylike. :PAnd I don't know what Maui has in her, I rescued her from the street when she was about 9 weeks old, abandoned and alone. There was a neighborhood stray that looked Siamese so I assumed she was the mother. I remember on my way to work I saw her dead in the middle of the street, most likely hit by a car. Two days later there was a kitten in my back yard all sick, red eyes, sniffly nose, sneezy, miserable looking and starved so I kept her and here she is 6 years later all healthy and (hopefully) happy. I never wanted a girl cat, always before had boys and preferred their temperament, but since she found me I just couldn't give her up after that.
Allie, yes, that is a black kitty with green eyes lurking in the back. His name is Sushi and he is my lazy boy.
Wow, Linda, have there been any injuries as a result of that explosion? I heard this morning that there are more bad chemicals in the rivers in West Virginia. I feel so sorry for those people, especially since I've been whining about nothing.Thank you for the compliment on my word pictures. What a nice way of putting it. I should have said that Cha Cha is lying on her back on the mattress with the back-healthy depressions built in. Just think about a cat lying on her back and rolling and stretching and meowing really, really quietly, just the picture of an animal reveling in what feels good to her. And remember that she is spayed, so all of this is pure joy, no mating intended.

Portia, a very good word picture of strutting her stuff. Sounds almost human. For the pure joy of strutting is amazing since she is spayed. I think it must be innate to the sex. I think about the people in WVA too. Water is essenntial to life, we know that. I feel for people who take medications that have a side effect of making the user extremely thirty.
The USA: This is my country and I love it. If people were perfect, then perhaps we could have utopia. People aren't perfect. I read about the founding fathers and feel pride. I like Thomas Jefferson most because he could see what we could be and could see what would prevent us from being what the founders had in mind. He harped on his subject, and, I am listening.
Alicja - We just became best friends :) your story is so sad but sweet w/ a happy ending. Don't worry, Maui is happy (and lucky)!!Portia - While the attention is all very sweet, people food isn't good for kitty. Her tummy upset because contrary to popular belief, milk is bad for cats. They cant digest it properly :( ok, I'm done preaching now :)
As far as any "bad behavior" in cats goes, I've actually never had one act like that! Even all my years at rescues, I've had perfectly tamed kitties. Dogs on the hand....different story, even after they're fixed. My legs have been accosted more times than they care to be lol.
Thank you, Allie. I think my cats are the most beautiful cats in the world, but I am always pleased to hear other people say nice things about them.I KNOW milk is bad for kitties. That is why she had runny tummy. The problem was that feeding her gave the ten-year old such pleasure and he only gave her a little bit, just enough to put liquid poo in the box :-(P I would give him cans of cat food to feed her instead but that didn't work. She lived well into her twenties, so ...
The ten-year-old's parents had broken up and he didn't have any after-school friends to hang with and my girl knew that he was lonely, so every day she stopped by the townhouse where he lived and they spent time together. Yes, I DO believe that animals know these things. *blinking back tears*
The story I like to tell about Zephyr's blue eyes is that her mother is black and white -- not tuxedo, just a plain old black and white cat. She and Cha Cha, the other cat, are litter mates. Everyone knows that a female cat can "entertain" more than one male's sperm in her kitty womb, right? Well, Zeef and Cha are living examples of that. So Zeef's Pop must have had some Siamese in him as must her mother because the blue eyes are recessive. Zeef's and Cha's brother also has blue eyes and the FOURTH kitten looks exactly like Cha but has amber-colored eyes. Mama got around.

P.S I don't think people should be scared of terrorism during the Russian Olympics. Not anymore than they should have been going to the London Olympics.

What has any of that got to do with animal welfare in the US and Europe?
You didn't need to stick up for the US, Tim. And if you did think you needed to, the topic was animal welfare in Europe and America.

Don't we all think that, lol? They are cute though. Question, why don't you have more than one picture of her as you do him? Is she camera shy?
Poor little boy :( I heartily believe animals can sense our mood and/or impending changes. Its basically proven with all the stories you hear about dogs sniffing out epilepsy fits before they happen or cats snuggling up and giving comfort to patients in nursing homes before they pass. Amazing.
I like your word for it, "entertain"! Momma got around indeed!

They are both female and the only reason there aren't more pictures on my profile is 'cause I haven't put 'em there. Trust me, I have so many pictures and videos of our pride that my idiot phone is maxing out! I'll do better, I promise.
Zee became Spouse's darling when she stuck to him like glue when he had a serious job challenge. Now they are stuck together forever :-)
Cha Cha is a control freak and she will stare at a person until her "target" does what she wants.
No surprises here. My cats are just like everyone else's ceptin' they're mine :-)

There's no feeling like getting books that you really want, but are not available in your country.
Heading to the ski slopes in the morn. Now what books should accompany me on the trail? I have some favorite spots where I stop and pull out a good story. Will be in Durango, Colorado tomorrow evening.

So easy for some to sit back in judgement. ;D
Portia - in keeping with what we were talking about, I found an article off www.freekibble.com I just had to tell you about: a rescued pit bull puppy named Dominic in a Colorado clinic has taken up the job of caring for other animals once they come out of surgery. Dominic lays down with these dogs until they wake up from the anesthetic and comforts them. Vets there are amazed because he always stays longest with the dogs who need the comfort most. If they wake crying, he lays his head on them until they calm down! More proof that animals can tell when other creatures are in need!Another point for the pits! That doesn't sound like a vicious dog to me.
Oh Allie that is a great story. Sadly they are a much maligned breed. I couldn't agree with you more about animals just knowing when to be there. They are incredibly intuitive. Our male dog was a very dominant dog, he really was the leader of the pack! Our female was a delicate little princess, and he was always in charge, not bossy, but if he was human we are talking alpha male, haha. Any way when he passed away from old age, she had a stroke, developed cushings disease and "doggy" dementia. It was heartbreaking for us, but he was her world. They were the greatest of mates and I know my life was richer for them being in it. Dogs, books, chocolate and vodka! My life would be complete, lol.

Nine new books! Beautiful animals, some rescued, but all loved! Snow skiing in Colorado (stay out of those wacky tobacky stores)! A hint of autumn in Southern Hemisphere! Eleven degrees F. in the sunny south, USA (it is so cold)! Super Bowl Sunday in just over one week along with Mr. Bill O'Reilly's interview with President Obama on the same day--surely not at the same time! The Black Widows loose in Russia, but they are loose somewhere all the time! Really good random thoughts--give us all a button! (Cold weather makes me ramble. It is a brain trick of some kind to keep the brain working harder so that heat can be more evenly distributed throughout the body. I made that up.) Since it is so cold here, snow would be nice. It was 70°F at the first of the week. Now we are using every means of heat possible in our house (heat unit, fireplace, electric blankets, hot water--I believe I will have some hot chocolate!
