If you watch the Killing Allie, recommend you watch the original scandanavian version, far superior than the US remake.
Thanks Andy. I really didn't have any intention to watch it. I think its around its third season so that would be a lot of catching up to do and I watch too much tv already :/ but I'll keep that in mind. I know the U.S. version you can watch off Netflix, do you know if the original version is on there too??

Go'on yer can never watch TOO MUCH TV :D
I see its a BAFTA winner and a slightly better rating than the U.S. version. My dvr (up to 89% full!) and my decreased tablet battery beg to differ :P
Thanks all....good to be back and see familiar "faces". Going to be in and out for a while as I now have to make up lost time with my daughters (like skiing in Colorado next week) and wine nights with the wife (only Reisling and Pinot Grigio). But will enjoy catching up on all and, hopefully, find some free downloads again.About retiring, as long as I'm with the crew I'm working football with now remains intact I'll probably stay if my health maintains.

Oh cheeky Jon! If I'm going to watch it at all, I wouldn't mind the Scandinavian version....problem would be finding it.

Top of the Lake was my favourite mini series/tv movie of 2013. fantastic show.
Good to see Elizabeth Moss won best female actor in a mini series Drama at the Golden Globes last week. I cheered.

I've seen her play the US president's daughter in "The West Wing" and a copywriter pre-women's lib in "Mad Men." When I see her name on the cast list, I expect the show to be good.
Yep us too Terri! we really like that too. I am a huge west wing fan. I'm looking forward to moving back to a house so I can have all my books and DVDs back. West wing is at the top of the list! That should make Chris happy I'm sure he is sick of Pride And Prejudice, lol.
I've never seen West Wing. Should I?Also, has anyone watched this show (trailer for season 2 of the Vikings): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXOej9... ?
On a completely separate, random note: Oklahoma judge found same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional, yay!
So now, in hopes my girlfriend doesn't see this and get nervous (I swear, I'm not thinking about marriage... much), I ask when is it going to be Florida's turn? If deep red Oklahoma and Utah went there, why can't my purple state?
The Viking show was heavily discussed by members of the group in the television/film thread. I'm having link troubles with my iPod at the moment, but if you can find it, we shared a lot. Others more than I though.

Thanks! I'm sure I'll find the thread, just may have to watch a few episodes first.
Alicja we have only seen the first season of Vikings! but definitely on the agenda for more.Interesting decision by the judge. Do you think it will hold? We recently had a state introduce same sex marriage, where a whole bunch of people for married. However the legislation was, I believe, doomed from the start, and they knew it. There were too many federal barriers in place to thwart it so it was never going to stand. I for one would not have got married under those circumstances, knowing in a matter of weeks it would be null and void. In my mind, knowing it couldn't work, would make it less. I would want to know when I did it, it would work, it could not be changed on me and that the will of the people wanted this for me too. Sounds a bit idealistic I know. I don't know, I just wish it wasn't something that had to be decided for us like we are children. Every night the news is horrific, somewhere! Why isn't love just love no matter where we find it, at whatever the cost. Good luck to you, I hope it sticks.

In Canada, one couple married and then divorced a month later. That way, they couldn't remove the same sex law without the really complicated red tape of what..annulling the divorce? Was clever really
Yes, very clever, Darcy. I completely understand why they all rushed out and got married while the law was in, but it seemed kind of hollow in a way knowing the govt was siting there thinking " we've got this covered".
It's a difficult topic in some ways because people have such varying and strong opinions, but I just don't think it should be that hard. I believe we should have a referendum. I'd like to think we are grown up enough to have this conversation, but you know what, I think that's probably naive. Melissa Etheridge, my absolutely favourite artist! all time ever, sings a great song about the plane from 911 that crashed in Philadelphia. She sings of a man " who could not teach your children in your schools because of who he loved" "does that make him any less of a hero". They are strong words but always make me shiver, but it comes back to the basic fundamental of that we are all human. Perhaps this is too much for a Friday night, with a head cold/chest infection. Time for bed I think, lol.
A link to the song if you are interested http://youtu.be/BuvBTfN9C0c
Getting married when the law is on shaky ground is meant more than just marriage, it is symbolic. I remember when San Francisco back years ago let same-sex couples marry. Everyone knew it wouldn't stick, it was just the mayor's decision, but there were couples who've been together 10, 20, 30, even 40 years together heading to the courthouse. It was symbolic, saying that this may not stick but we deserve the same rights and we will fight to have them. And Melissa Etheridge is one of us! I know she has been an activist for a long time, I think she even had babies with her partner some time back.

I couldn't stay up late enough to watch the Stosur match, but I've been watching the matches that take place early in the day(over there). It's been interesting to see the players try and cope with those blistering temperatures. It sounds as if it's supposed to cool down a bit in Melbourne....so hopefully no more heat strokes!

My question about the heat is: How do the animals cope? When it is hot here, our cats insist in going outside so they can lie under the porch all day. The deer who wander through the back of our yard pant. And the foxes and raccoons only stop by at night. Now that it is Winter here, our cats stay inside.
Portia wrote: "My question about the heat is: How do the animals cope? When it is hot here, our cats insist in going outside so they can lie under the porch all day. You're right, Alicja. Every time one of our cats has its temp taken at the vet, I start worrying until I remember they run hot. I've also noticed that our cats seem to dislike air conditioning. They sure do like a nice fire in the hearth. We have one who, when the fire is out, will sit in front of the fireplace and give me that, "You're the human, do something!" Look that all cats learn from their mothers right after they learn about using the litter box :)
Oh, O do know that look. It is paired with a pathetic sounding meow that pulls on the heart strings as if you not doing it is the greatest injustice in the world. And most of the time it works because I give in way too easily. Mine like going out onto the porch since most of the time it is hotter outside than inside with the airconditioner. I am so happy we don't have a fireplace so mine have no idea what they're missing.
Oh, thank god the bloody reverse date link is working again. It is so annoying reading all the posts when I have to click newest and scroll down!
Portia wrote: "My question about the heat is: How do the animals cope? When it is hot here, our cats insist in going outside so they can lie under the porch all day. The deer who wander through the back of our..."Alicja's correct. Cats do run hotter than humans but they also tend to lose body heat which is why they sit on top of TV's, close to fireplaces, snuggle in blankets, etc. for warmth. However, they are susceptible to heatstroke (and sunburn!) in extreme heat. If Mr. Kitty looks/acts lethargic, running a cold washcloth over him will cool him down and keep changing his water so its always cold. Also, you can always shave off that fur coat he's carrying. I had to go back to living with my dad one summer, who lives in a trailer w/o a/c and I took my cat to the groomers to have him shaved down. He was back to acting normal after that. Groomer's said business always picks up in summer lol.
Didn't know that, thanks Allie!Although, my boy, Sushi, is always lethargic. While my girl, Maui, has the energy of a herd of cats. :P

Once it gets over 40 degrees Celsius, chickens struggle.
Dogs and cats do alright if they can get into shade and have plenty of water.
Horses and cattle can survive heat no prob. As log as they can get a drink.

Thank goodness for the 'Date' button.
being able to click 'Date' and be taken straight to the end of the thread and have all the new posts displayed for me without having to scroll.....it is a luxury i cannot do without on this site.
@ Alicja, I agree, it would be symbolic. Fingers crossed that this is something that doesn't take too much longer to be history, and just a way of life.Whenever we drive around I always look in the paddocks and feel sorry for the cows with no shade. Surely they must feel the heat. Terri can you offer anything there?? So many paddocks here don't have shade trees at all, because it doesn't normally get this hot, if anything it's usually raining. But how do they cope being in the sun all day long? A friend recently posted a picture on Facebook of a dog with blistered paws, where someone had taken it where the pavement was clearly too hot. It was a terrible image. On the other scale of temperature though, a rescue site in Arkansas, that I "like" posted pictures of a boxer dog that had been tied to its kennel and left out in this current American winter. It's "fur friend" Labrador only just survived but the boxer did not. How do people forget about how much the weather affects their pets? Last night my husband sat out side, while it was still so warm spaying little honey eating birds with water, they loved it. I'm hoping a koala will come down for some water next, now that would be cool.
Wow. I just watched Lincoln the 2012 movie on the telly and have to say I was blown away by it.Daniel Day-Lewis was just extraordinary in the lead role as was Sally Field as his wife. How he managed to remember those speeches and express the feelings of the day was brilliant. I knew he (Lincoln) was a great man but the movie brought him to life for me. I take it that the American readers here will already know this, but Lincoln isn't as far as I know on any school corriculum here, so the film was a revelation to me and I dare say many others.

Didn't know there was one out in 2012. Was it a big Hollywood movie or a TV movie (made by a channel). I need to track it down now and watch it... Thanks!

Oh thank goodness we've moved on from dead chickens and overheated animals! I felt so bad, I donated to help treat burned koala's in New South Wales bushfires :(

How did you not know about this movie, lol! It was all the rage last year, especially at the Oscars. It has really good actors in it too. Daniel-Day Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. You have to see it :)
From the legality of Gay marriage to the internal temperature of a Cat! I have to say, I really enjoy this group.

I live in a little bubble called gf, work, reading, gf, work, gaming, internet news, gf, reading, etc. The only show I watched last year was Doctor Who, and I am not sure I watched more than two movies. For example, I just discovered there is a show called Vikings!
Daniel Day-Lewis has done Oscar-level (and winning) work in HF films that you might want to check out, Alicja. "The Last of the Mohicans" with the ever-quotable, "I WILL find you"; "The Gangs of New York" that takes place about ten years after The Gods of Gotham, and Lincoln. Happy viewing! :)
