A couple of writers, but as I read their books, I'm happy with that. :)
Book buddies are the best. I've found so many new and interesting books through you guys.
Very funny article about an author who sits in with a book group reading his book.http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/12/boo...
I too like my friend here. Definitely not a friend collector, here or in Facebook, or in real life. I have a small selection of friends, but just good ones. I've never been one to put myself out there much. Probably a little gamer on the internet. I did put myself out there once, with a customer from work. It was really odd, I'd met them twice and went to their house for a BBQ. Me and my husband joked they might be serial killers. But we found the most amazing friendship among the four of us, and it's been a great experience. Mind, I wouldn't do it again, too chicken, lol. HOT HOT HOT - just saying.

We email, text, talk on the phone, and occasionally have holidays together.
Omg guys, right after all our talk, an author just friended me! She's got 2 books coming out! I accepted before looking at her profile because she was part of a discussion I was following on the Holocaust & WWII. I just said no authors or publishers ever befriended me!

Seriously! We JUST talked about it lol. Then she sent me this long message about her two books. I can not be guilt tripped into reading them. I will not...

Congrats Dave - Grandkids are why we put up with kids :)
As for the weather news - it looks like we are heading into our January Thaw here - temp in the high 30's and the snow is melting fast

Hahaha! That definitely reminds me of some of the group reads around here, when the author is involved. Thanks Dawn. I gotta good laugh out of that one.

I've defriended people if I find they are only around to promote something. I have friends on GR's because I know them, somehow/somewhere I've talked to every person on my friend list. None of them are complete strangers and all are active users. Most of them are actual friends, I might not ever have seen any of them but we've had good chats. :)
Thanks for the congrats about my second grandchild, its also my granddaughters 6th birthday today, were on Skype to her atm. Message to Allie, made me smile when I read your post about the author sorry :)
Dave - ha! At least something good came out of it :)And Happy Birthday to your granddaughter! It would have been my grandpa's 83rd and both of my great grandfathers birthday today as well!
Dave wrote: "Thanks for the congrats about my second grandchild, its also my granddaughters 6th birthday today, were on Skype to her atm. Message to Allie, made me smile when I read your post about the author ..."and also for the first one we can see in your photo. she's really cute!
She really is cute, don't know why we didn't have grandchildren first as they are much more fun, tbh were very lucky with our children or as they like to be called young adults, never had problems with any of them.
I see on some of the Author's home page they ask the question "Why do you want to be my friend?" And you have to answer honestly before they will yea or nay you. I wish I knew how to get that query on my home page!
Here is one way you can ask this question:If you go to "edit profile" and then click on your "settings" tab, when you scroll down, you'll see something called a "Challenge Question". Whatever you write in there will appear when someone wants to send you a friend request and if you ask them a question, there will be a spot for them to answer. You can then ask why they want to be your friend or anything else to know and will be able to read their answer before accepting or rejecting their request.
If you want to see how it works, friend me and you'll see my question.
Tim wrote: "What if they are just poor lonely individuals with no friends just trying to reach out?;-)..."
They can go be lonely with someone else. :)
No, but really, people who send me friend requests have to have something in common with me. Books, groups. Something. If they don't share my interests in some small way than why the hell do they want me as a friend? They clearly aren't interested in who I am.
I have my friend thingie set up with a question. Something like "why do you want to be friends?".
Having a question sorts the wheat from the chaff. If someone just wants names for their friends list, or is an author who doesn't care to know me, but wants to connect only because I run a group, or they are a person who want women's names on their friends list (yes, there are guys out there who collect women members like serial killers)...well..that question will show them up for what they are every time.
p.s what Andy said is true. If someone mentions they like Cornwell too, that is usually enough for me to let them in the gate. :)
Dave wrote: "Thanks for the congrats about my second grandchild, its also my granddaughters 6th birthday today, were on Skype to her atm. Message to Allie, made me smile when I read your post about the author ..."Congrats on the grandkids, Dave. Many you have many, many more (and not have to babysit them all at once).
Dave, you mentioned something back in the thread about newbie friend requests???I often accept friend requests from newbies. You can nearly always tell when someone is new to the site and they are genuinely looking to connect with other readers.
But then there are those newbies who are on the site primarily to have a big friends list. It makes themm feel popular I think.
Books and book groups are not on their priorities list.
They just want to have people in their friends list and they don't care if you have anything in common. They never intend on having anything to do with you once you accept their friend request.
these newbies are easy to detect too.
Spam artists on the loose with bad tactics. :(This is directed at authors, so unless you're an author you won't be subject. I've found Goodreads staff pretty helpful lately, I hope they can action this one.
I tend not to let anyone in any more unless I've had contact with them somewhere on the site. These days, it's mostly through this group.
OMG I watched the coolest tv show last night. True Detective here's the trailer. Gives me chills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXwCoN...
Here's the shows details http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2356777/
Stars Matthew McConnaughy and Woody Harrelson. Super cool and super addictive. I was spellbound by the first episode. McConnaughy and Harrellson are awesome.

That does look fascinating! I am wishing I had HBO now...
It is one of those real creepy serial murderer stories. Gives me chills. The ending of episode one blew my mind.
The acting with those two guys is outstanding. McConnaghy is the deeply troubled, dark alcoholic detective with the mind of a genius. Great character. Woody Harrellson's character doesn't know how to deal with him.
I've seen previews for that but don't have HBO either! My final note on the whole "friend request thing": I forgot how every comment you make is updated on your profile...one of the old men that friended me recently must have deleted me as their friend because he's nowhere to be found. I'm a friend down! Oops.
Sounds like he wasn't really a GR friend. Not if he gave you the flick over nothing. People on GR who are genuinely interested in you and your reading wouldn't want to give you the flick.
@Jaq Must be a different case -- however, I did have that problem, with a group mod spamming. After scratching my head a bit I 'blocked this member' and that meant I didn't need to leave the group. How's that?

Departing from HF somewhat, I'm currently watching and loving the second series of "The Bridge". It's a gritty Danish/Swedish cop thriller in a similar vain as "The Killing" and I can't recommend it enough. The first series is available on iTunes and you can download the first episode to check it out. Basically a woman's body is found lying exactly halfway along the bridge joining Sweden and Denmark, but when police go to remove the body they discover the bottom half belongs to a different victim!

Hi MarkThe second series is on Saturdays and on the bbc iplayer, the flashbacks fill in some of the first series so it's a standalone plot.
Enjoy.. Jon
We've watched all the episodes and are impatiently waiting for the next season to be released. The actress who plays Sonya, the American detective who had Aspergers, does a fine job. The Australian actor who plays the guy who rescues abused women is familiar from the series called "Top of the Lake". (Do I have that right? Elisabeth Moss is also in it.)

Saw your post last night and I've set the series to record. Looks good.
Darcy wrote: "American Football season's end must nigh as Bobby is commenting again :)"Yeah, I always like it when Bobby is back! I thought you were gonna retire soon?? Then you'd have lots of R&R Bobby....
I've not seen any of this show, but thanks for the tip Jon, it sounds interesting. The Danes do a pretty good job of that type of show. We were big fans of The Eagle series, which was also really good. Very gritty.
Andy You won't be disappointed, It's quite clever how they reunite the two detectives with the bridge.
Portia
Sounds like they've re-made it for an American audience, though I never understand why? They did the same for "The Killing" and it just didn't work for me. I think something is either lost in translation or they just can't help playing around with it.
