Allison | 1704 comments There you are Alicja! I have a question for you, my Polish pal.

My neighbor (of long ago childhood years) was half Polish and half Hungarian. She told us to put money out on your porch/doorstep on New Years Eve and leave it there over night. It would supposedly bring you wealth in the new year. So I've carried on all these years but can't remember if its a Polish tradition or a Hungarian tradition. I figured I'd ask you if you knew anything about it being a Polish tradition. I'm curious and can't find anything about it on the internet.

Those temps feel like last May here; last June got into the 90s here.
Our winters are crazy now; it seems like below freezing and snow for a few days; minus degrees at night. Then we get a few days like now, where it's in the high 30s and 40s... then cycle starts again.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments For those who want a proper cold winter, my area might be right for you: temperatures dropping to -22C tonight with a windchill making it seem like -36C. It's currently -11C and dropping. To make it more interesting we've had nearly 40cms of snow just overnight, with more on the way (that's over a foot for the Imperial measurers out there).
The alpine skiing around here isn't great, but if you're into the Nordic version, this would be the place to be. The same goes for snowshoeing. :D

Our new heat/air pump displays the outside temp on the indoor whatever you call the thing on the wall where you turn it on and off. We are spending time just watching the temp fall from 44F to 9F over a short period. We are real party animals, can't you tell?

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Physically I feel better in the heat and humidity. I envy anyone having summer right now!

The Sea hawks are a good team, but the Saints may be looking for payback this weekend. KC was better than the Colts, but they lost. Aaron Rodgers(sp) and Peyton Manning look sour when they lose, not Favrian at all! I like to see an opponent help a downed player to his feet. Remember when Michael Shayhann(sp) helped Favre up after Michael sacked Facts. Both of then were laughing. There is more to that story, but I like players who love the game, win or lose. So who will it be in the Super Bowl?

message 5857: by [deleted user] (new)

Seattle vs Denver is my Super Bowl prediction. I'd love to see New Orleans in there, though.

Hi Jaq,
We like to keep the monthly group reads as a sub focus of the group and that's why they are below the era sections.
The major focus is the era discussions and the threads about multiple books and authors.

You don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom. There are quicker ways to get to the Monthly Group Reads Folder to find the book you are reading.

See below image.
You will see a link to each of the 'currently reading' group reads in the books at the top of the page.
Click one of those.

It will take you to a group read you may not be reading, but when you get there, click 'Monthly Group Reads' in the title of the discussion.

You will be taken to the Monthly Group Read Folder where you can select your relevant group read.

I don't recall that being a Polish tradition BUT (there is always a but, isn't there?) Poland has many regions and each region has its own traditions than can vary greatly. It could just mean that it isn't a tradition on the Pomorze. I'll ask my parents next time I talk to them.

Oh, I guess if you are counting in Celsius that may be possible. Right now we have 23 degrees so it may fall a bit over night. I am so hoping it will. Oh, that reminds me, maybe I should take out and wash a sweatshirt and sweater tonight then, just in case. So excited!!

No it fahrenheit lol. I'm in Jacksonville..the largest city in the USA (by land mass) not counting Alaska. I plan on wearing 2 pairs of pants tomorrow, socks, leather coat, and my scarf. Won't I be cute haha. Where are you Alicja?

Ah, that makes sense, you are practically in Georgia. :P

I'm in the Ft. Lauderdale area, near Miami. I am sitting on my porch right now is shorts and a short sleeve tee sipping ice tea and feeling completely comfortable for the first time in forever. I like Jacksonville weather (I have a friend living up there and my brother was stationed there a few years back so I've visited often) but its like a completely different state up there.

I hate Florida! Oh I mean hot weather! Moved there last year for 5 agonizing months. Even in Dec/Jan I couldn't take the heat. I kept thinking, this is it. I'm dying. As I was all sprawled out in barely nothing w/ my air full blast & 3 fans blowing on me!

I know how you feel! I do too. I wish I could move somewhere more bearable (Seattle seems like a great place to live). Unfortunately, my and my SO's families are here so, at least for now, I'm stuck.

message 5875: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Seattle is a great city too. Pike Place Market and the original Starbucks!
Same weather as I have though, you have to love rain and you can't mind living with no sun for 3 - 4 months of the year! Personally, I wouldn't live anywhere else but it doesn't work for everyone. :)

I overdosed on the sun about ten years back, my pale skin can't take any more bombardment. I am packed and ready to move! But my partner doesn't think she'd do as well, plus she claims there are no Mexicans in Seattle, lol.

Too funny. I love the hot weather. I could wear sundresses and flip flops all year long.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I certainly prefer the heat to the cold.

message 5879: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Not a whole lot of Mexicans in Seattle, it's true. Mostly Asian, South Asian and oodles of Caucasian hipsters.
The closest good Mexican food will be in California! :)

message 5880: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Jan 06, 2014 09:13PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments That's open to debate. The Mexican food in California is nothing like the food of actual Mexico. I found Cali-Mex was a shock to my system, after having eaten at a really good genuine Mexican restaurant here in Melbourne years ago.

If I have to eat Mexican fusion food, I prefer Tex-Mex.

That's funny that you should mention Seattle. Half my moms side of the family live near the Navy Base out there and have been trying to get us to all move!

I thought about looking for a job in Seattle...rainy weather is my absolute favorite weather. I'm always reminded of the Disney movie "The Sword in the Stone" were the bad wizard says "I HATE sunshine! I hate, hate, hate sunshine! I hate it!" ... that's me.

Erica: I do love me some flip flops though! Thanks for the friend invite btw :)

message 5882: by Alicja (new)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments My brother was just told he will be moving in a few months to the Naval Base out there (he is stationed in Virginia right now).

I love, love, love rainy weather as well. I actually enjoy the hurricanes (at least the 1s and 2s that do minimal damage), like the rain and wind howling outside. And I like chilly weather (the blizzard up north is a bit much but 30s and 40s are perfect!).

message 5883: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Thanks for the friend invite Alicja! My, aren't I the popular one? Yessss, I just quoted Ace Ventura. Sweet.

Me too about rain & wind! I love tornados. My dad and I chased one down the freeway once! The temperature up here right now is only fun for kids that don't have to go to school the next few days. 30s/40s is perfect.

Good luck to your bro! My cousin loved it there (he's out of the navy now). And my moms cousin's husband (my second cousin in law?) loved it so much, he's made a career out of it. Over 30 years!

message 5884: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Okay, you rain lovers definitely need to move out here. It sounds like the perfect weather for both of you!!

My Mom and I always say we were born with webs between our toes because we love the rain so much. :)

Seattle is very friendly too.

Dawn (caveatlector) Sports is so not interesting!! Besides, I'm Canadian, there is only one sport, and that is hockey! None of the rest count. ;)

message 5887: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Oh my gosh Dawn! While reading Derek's comment I was totally thinking the same thing and then I read yours :) if someone started talking hockey, I'd never leave this thread.

Find me a receptionist job in Seattle and I'm there tomorrow!

message 5888: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments And as a Canadian, you forgot about the other national sport....curling! Haha.

message 5889: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I don't care much for hockey but I live in Canuckville and can't get away from it. There are very rabid fans around here. I haven't liked them since 1994, I'm holding a grudge about the last time we made it to the Stanley Cup (and didn't win).

I've always thought of curling as a small town winter pass time. It's never really sunk in that it's a big sport. :)
I think I'll try watching some for the olympics though, we usually do pretty good.

I'm Canadian and abhor hockey. There isn't a sport I hate more than hockey, though curling puts me to sleep. It's like golf to me, fine if you're playing; what's the point of being a spectator? haha

message 5893: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments American football's not for me! I don't understand it and it looks like a whole bunch of guys trying to knock each other down and kick a ball over the post. The games seem like they'll never end. The other sports seem to have some point and don't last forever. I think baseball's the best of the lot.

message 5894: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments No for me it's cricket. I hate it, there is nothing good to be said about it, it has no redeeming features, and in a country that gets as hot as Australia does, it is the stupidest sport in the world to be played at the height of an Australian summer! Wow that felt good.

message 5895: by Jane (new)

Lisa, also I don't like the idea of youngsters like my grandsons [oldest is 14] playing it. I'm so afraid of injuries, especially to the head, despite helmet and padding.

message 5898: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 728 comments That was obviously meant to be "Jane", sorry. Yes i know what you're saying, that actually made the news over here, and I don't blame you for being concerned. I think tackling should be removed from football codes. In rugby league over here it has become a completely pointless part of the came. I don't understand why they are hesitant to change.
