Terri | 19576 comments Sorry I have been MIA for the last day and a half. It is Christmas Eve here in Australia and the last two days have been hectic with Christmassy stuff.

May not get much chance to drop by tomorrow either, for obvious reasons. :) I thought I would steal away from my Christmas cooking to wish everybody who celebrates on the 25th of December, a happy Christmas or Yule.

Whether you spend it with others or with a companion or by yourself, I hope you make the most of it and have a lovely day!!

Simona | 1453 comments I wish you the same Terri. Here I'm fully in hectic christmassy cooking right NOW, but I also wish everybody an Happy Christmas. See you later for the Happy New Year....:)

Terri | 19576 comments Just finished my stuffing for the turkey. Which I won't stuff until tomorrow morning after present opening.
But before the stuffing I was up to my eyeballs in rolling and stirring.
I make Nigella's Christmas Puddini and several kinds of Fudge every Christmas Eve (today). :)
I hope all your cooking turns out perfectly, Simona...and everybody else who is cooking for Christmas.

All the best folks!

Lisa | 728 comments With only the two of us for Xmas, I must say I don't envy all that cooking Terri. But I must say I like the sound of the puddin and fudge, yuuummmm.

Anyways, everybody, I have really enjoyed my time in the group this year, and though I don't participate in all the conversations I enjoy the interaction of everyone. I feel I have made lots of new friends!!

So on that note I wish you all a Merry Xmas. Even if you do not celebrate the occasion, I hope you enjoy the break, and it involves good food, good company and lots of laughter. Enjoy and stay safe! :))))

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Merry Christmas Terri and to every member of the group

My personal candy creation is carmels - I spent most of today wrapping them for Neighborhood gifts.

My wife says that she knows when it the Christmas season - Mannheim Steamroller in on the CD player and I am making carmels.

Our family's holiday feast in Christmas Eve, but it shouldn't be too bad - I have to put ham, special Christmas potatos and rolls in the oven, and put together the apptaizers, Mrs. Happy does the deserts ( which she finished today a couple of different types of pies - Lemon Merg... - I can never spell it whipped egg whites :), and an Apple) The menu is pretty much set in stone.

Once again to quote Clement Moore - "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

I actually bakes a cake, not sure if it is edible since we haven't tried it yet but here's hoping.

I am envious of those that get a quiet Christmas. My partner and I have a two-parter. Later today we'll be submerged in Polish traditions with my family over Christmas Eve. And then tomorrow its Mexican Christmas with her family, and all those traditions. Wish us luck!

Portia Alicija, do you set an extra place at your Christmas Eve table in memory of those who have gone ahead and in case there is a knock at the door and The Guest with no place to stay ( and his mother and stepdad) show up? Our first Xmas, my Spouse, who isn't Eastern European, reminded me to set the place and does so every year.

Have a Happy!

Yes, my parents do that (since we go to their house for the Polishness). We do early evening there. Then we go to Catholic church where both are families go to midnight mass together (and here is proof there is no God, I'm sure my girl-loving, atheist self would have burst into flames the minute I step through a church threshold otherwise :P). And then we go to her family's for the feast and then spend the next day quietly with her family. Home by afternoon.

Just got back from having lunch with mum at the nursing home. She's had another TIA. So a little sad today.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful time. <3

Allison | 1704 comments I'm sorry about your mum.

Was planning on seeing my grandmother (Alzheimer patient) at the nursing home today and we ran out of time :( sorry excuse for Xmas eve I know. Racked with guilt now. Then we had dinner with the whole family minus her and my grandfather (he died last year) and it was the first year w/o them. Wow, sorry didn't mean to damper Xmas.

Margaret & Allie....My thoughts are with you. My father has dementia, so I know where you're coming from. It's what makes holidays hard....reflecting back on times that were normal with a childlike enthusiasm.

Hang in there & try to keep things in perspective. We all lose it mentally & physically sooner or later.*hugs*

message 5732: by Vanessa Eden (new)

Vanessa Eden Patton (vanessaeden) | 98 comments Allie, I work on an Alzheimer's unit in a nursing home. I know it
is hard on you right now not getting to see your grandma. I am actually at work now (on a break!) and I just finished my get up round. my partner and I sang Christmas Carols to the residents and put it on Christmas vacation ( on TV) in their rooms. The patients loved it. I bet the nursing home your grandma is in, that the cna's did the same. Even though you can't be with her all the time I assure you that the people who are there, really do care and do everything they can to make the holidays at the nursing home special. I know I do and so do all my Co workers.

I just want to say: I love my Little residents.

message 5733: by Haydn (new)

Haydn Morris Margaret, Allie sorry to hear about your loved ones, it's a hard time of the year if the folk you love aren't too well.
I lost my Aunt last week, my brother Dec, 2 years ago and my mother December 4 years ago, so I can empathise.
December is not a good month for me, but you know what, I look around at my kids, my grand kids here with me today and thank my lucky stars. I'm surrounded by the ones I love and that's all that matters, sure I miss those not here in the flesh but they are with me in spirit. Hang on in there and don't kick yourself with guilt, be strong and enjoy the season of goodwill to all. Merry Xmas.
BTW I'm not getting much reading done with this lot here. ;-)

message 5734: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Thanks everyone :)

Truly didn't mean to get all emo there, was just telling Margaret I could commiserate. Regardless, thank you for all the warm wishes. And Vanessa, your awesome! Unfortunately our family is having major problems with my g-ma's nursing home but some of those people are amazing. There's always things going on where they try to get the patients involved. My g-ma is just too far gone for anything :( what a life.

On a happy note....it was my nephews first Christmas (and he'll turn 1 on Sunday)! He wanted nothing to do whatsoever with unwrapping or the actual presents. Wish I had known that before I spent a gazillion dollars!

message 5736: by Portia (new)

Portia My husband's favorite aunt passed away on December 20. She was 99. The family was in the process of planning her 100th. If there is good news, it is that she lived at home (a lot due to her incredible neighbors) and felt ill, went into the hospital where she had a heart attack and then slipped away peacefully. A comfort, yes, but I still hate it when there is a death at the holidays.

Speaking of families, has anyone seen the movie "August: Osage County"? It has opened in NY and LA but nowhere else in the US. We saw the play twice, and Tracy Letts, the playwrite (known to TV viewers as the Senator who took CIA director Mandy Patinkin's job from him in the series "Homeland,") won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for it, so the reviewer's criticism of the script was somewhat surprising.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/27/mov...

I can believe that all of the big stars were out-acting each other, though. And I do believe that Margo Martindale is a fine actor. Spouse and I have seen her in a number of series here, most recently "The Americans" about a Soviet couple who are posing as a normal American couple living in Northern Virginia during the final years of the Soviet Union. We liked (binged) the first season and she was wonderful in it.

I am also very interested in hearing how people other than Americans react to this movie. I feel a bit put off by the review but am still planning to see it.

message 5737: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I feel for every one of you who has had sorrow during the season. My father died twenty years ago, and I thought my world would never be right again. But it is. I dream about him a lot, but in the dreams we are talking and laughing like we are having a wonderful visit. The dreams bring me peace. I wish for all of you who are hurting a sense of peace.

Those of you in the USA may have heard about the bank robber who killed a policeman in Tupelo, Ms. It has been on the national news since yesterday. My son works a few blocks from the bank that was robbed. His place of business went on lock down immediately. The perp escaped. I was driving in my town which is thirty miles from Tupelo on Monday and drove right upon an obvious crime scene. The police had cornered a man in a car of the same description as the bank robber. This is the sad part. The 'suspect' was an innocent man home for Christmas driving a rental car. It is a wonder he was not killed. The real robber was seen in Atlanta, GA, yesterday, but he is still on the
loose. He is a dead man walking, though.
I want to re-wind time and have none of this happen. I expect all of us have had the same wish at one time or another.

message 5738: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Geez Louise!

I'm glad your son and rental car guy are both safe. I hadn't heard of this yet...no surprise though since I never watch/read the news. Either too depressing or makes me angry.

Reviewer in our Sunday paper today loved it. Praised Meryl Streep and Benedict Cumberbatch to the skies.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments The bank robber/murderer was killed in Arizona in the act of robbing another bank. Someone called 911, an officer responded, a detective happened to be in the area. The robber opened fire and the detective shot the perp dead. I was reading and listening to the news so I may be wrong in a detail or two. The Arizona authorities sent condolences to the slain and wounded officers' families here is Mississippi. I appreciate that.
