It's been warm for the last week or so (mid 50's), but I woke up to 3 inches of snow this morning and it is supposed to stay cold (mid 20s) for at least the next week

Nobody was moving!

Unfortunately, we usually get more ice than snow around here. The meteorologists are now saying we're going to get more snow than ice, which probably means it will be the other way around. I'm hoping they're right. It only takes about an inch of that ice to wreak havoc on the power lines & trees. I'm going to stock up on non-perishable foods just in case. I've learned my lesson from past ice storms.

Will they call out the National Guard?
I think we're supposed to be getting rain, but of course the weather report changes minute to minute. :)
If it gets bad enough they might. It's happened before. There's no telling. The weather forecasters around here are excellent at predicting the severe storms that we get in the spring, but when it comes to winter storms, they tend to be more indecisive.
Watched the two new time team specials on sunday.the Hastings one was abit pointless, heres a link to English Heritage website for more information.

the Bedlam show was much more interesting and I learned quite alot about its history.
Oh good grief. It really bugs me that a fantasy book won the Goodreads Choice Awards Historical Fiction category.
I know in future they are looking into doing an International Goodreads Awards. I can't wait for that. No offense to our American mates, but as this is an American site, the membership is predominantly American members.
This reflects in the book choices and winners throughout all the voting stages.
American books and books that are popular in the US do dominate the field.
I think so; I agree. In hist fic I voted for Burial Rites even though I had only given it a 3. I thought it was the best of the choices.
I voted for the Philippa Gregory...I felt I needed to vote for something that at least had pretensions of being historical fiction. :P

I'm one American whose taste is not what this site would call mainstream. Good, I'd welcome an International Goodreads award!!
There were many romances masquerading as historical fiction in all the voting rounds and yet the book that won was the one book I felt shouldn't win under any circumstances. Due to it being in the wrong genre altogether. At least the romances are realistic (in so far as not fantsy..lol..I don't know about the realism of the romances).

Many of us did write in votes for HF that weren't nominated. None of them made it into the semi final. :\

I'm not surprised.
I'm aware that my literary tastes aren't the most common: I don't like the 50 shades of grey series, harlequin books, twilight books, the i love shopping...etc series,..and the most part of the books you find at the airport bookstore!, so I didn't expect my favourite books to win.
(even if my Urban Fantasy one did: yay Cold Days!)

Really unhappy and cross this morning. Just discovered the BBC have axed my second favourite television show: Ripper Street. :(

Its a shame, is a great series.
Anything they broadast is to get people to buy the sponsors' stuff, so it comes down to $$. Apparently, more people watch that mindless reality show nonsense.I really can't find much on the tv these days of my interest.
I have a TV show to suggest. It's called "The Americans" and it is about a Russian couple living in Northern Virginia in the 1980s, in the last days of the Soviet Union. The couple were raised to speak American and are living in a 1980s Northern Virginia residential community and running a travel agency and spying. The costumes are pretty close to the way I dressed back then. The acting is really good, especially Matthew Rhys, who is fact is Welch. He is a fine actor, not just because he's got the accent down pat. I love watching him ply his craft. The couple starts by pretending to be a normal American couple living in the Washington, DC suburbs with two kids, then they take on roles to get information from people who work for places like the CIA or the FBI or the Defense Department. I love his character Phillip's character Clark. The woman he is trying to get to help him obtain information from her boss at the FBI keeps pulling innocent tricks on him that he doesn't think of beforehand. In the second to last episode, Rhys did something that no one has done in 30 years. He was driving one of those old US cars, like a Buick or Oldsmobile or Chevy, with no bucket seats, just one long seat going from the driver's side to the passenger's and when he went to back the car up, he turned around and put his right arm over the seat to see where he was going. NOBODY does that anymore because we have bucket seats, lots of mirrors and headrests that no one can see over. Not that that makes him a good actor. It was the nostalgia of 30 years ago that got to me. I doubt if 30 years is ancient enough for this group, but I think it is a good show, so I am recommending it. We had to buy the season for $20.00 because we don't the station that airs it but Spouse and I think it was money well spent. And yes, Terri, we googled the show like crazy to find out if it had been renewed!
I liked "the Americans". I thought the lead guy was fabulous. It comes back late January or early February I believe for its second season.
Super news. Maybe our cable service will carry it by then. Thanks goodness for On Demand . That way I 'm only a week behind everyone else. : P
Isn't it on FX? I thought that was included in a basic cable package? That's what I have w/ Comcast.
We have Cox. They don't carry FX. I have no idea why not. But we do get it On Demand. That's how we watch "Justified." Which is fine because I hate commercials. The one that was driving me crazy before the Holiday ones started was the "Either/Or" car commercial: "You can have sweet or sour. You can have bed or breakfast." Arrrgh!
Thanks for the heads up on that one, Portia. I will keep an eye out for it. It isn't on cable here yet and I don't know if it is on free to air (I don't watch free to air and never know what is playing on it). Will check it out if I see it advertised though.

Well my pc desk top finally died after 7 years, hoping a friend get it to work so I can get my files, books and pics off it.

That would be good--no ads excepts thoe short ones before and after.
RIP, indeed. If only some of our other world leaders had similar standards!Portia, I missed a couple episodes of The Americans, but I thought it was really good. I love the whole Cold Ward era theme. It was a fascinating time. Not so much for some who lived through it I'm sure. But I think they did a pretty good job with the show.

On a happier note: I wish I had security cameras in my house because then they would have caught my cat falling off my bed. He was just laying there, sleeping. I walked into the room, sat by my computer on the bed next to him. He looks at me, meows, stretches... and as he starts rolling to the side dives off the bed. Hehe, it was so funny and he just looked so shocked about it!
My cat does that all the time! He has his favorite corner he sleeps in and he'll stretch full length and plop! Off he goes. Sometimes he drags the blankets down w/ him. I worry he'll get too tangled and break a leg or something :(
Every cat must do that. Ours does too and then looks so embarrassed, like when you trip and try and pretend that you didn't?? That's what ours does, bloody hilarious!
