I think on first read I would not have believed it, but now that I have read further along, I agree. No wonder the action skips ahead eight years; he needed all that time to put all his ducks in a row.

p 404 (at the opera):
Then: observe that he is not with a woman like other women, but with a foreigner--a Greek, a schismatic ...

Anyone know what a schismatic is? Or what it means in this context? The definition I found is unsatisfactory.

Maybe it relates to the Orthodox church being broken away from the Roman church? So, it is a synonym for Greek, rather than a definition of the woman?

He called her Albanian earlier in the chapter, but I think you're right. I didn't think of the religion; I was thinking about nationality. Thanks.

All of the definitions I found talked about church schisms, so it was just an educated guess.

You and Kim make me feel like such a lazy reader. I'm just reading it for the story, and skimming over things like this!

That's how I read it the first time. Now I'm nitpicking!

That's probably it; a description of her religion, which would be Greek Orthodox rather than Roman Catholic.

You readers are impressing me! I really need to slow down a bit and absorb more...the story just drew me along so quickly, I literally inhaled the book.

I have been inhaling it, too! And I am off to take a reading break soon, before I have to cook dinner. I really want to find out what happens.

I love learning these little things along the way! I have been throwing some random stuff out to my husband, too, but now he wants to read the book, so I have to be careful. I think he read an abridged version years ago.

Tracey (stewartry) "Schismatic", if anyone still cares, seems to be the split from Rome which resulted in the Greek Orthodox Church.

So that's how Franz factors in!
