Self-publishing and the publishing costs is tacked on the cover price. =)

Charles (OcotilloArts) I've been writing for a long time, and publishing since 1971 -- stories, a story collection, a crime novel, In Uz and since the late 90s about ten artists books. Lately I have been doing text-only versions, or reduced-facsimile versions, of these books in order to sell them at an affordable price to actual readers (rather than collectors). Since 1995 I have distributed my writings free on my website ocotilloarts.com, where my science fiction cycle of 6 novels has been read by 250+ new readers a year for almost 15 years. The first 2 volumes of this novel cycle (E E by Charles Brownson have been published, as well as a new novel The Expatriate also in text-only and in distribution: go to my website to get a copy until it hits Amazon etc. At this point my goal in writing is to write -- it's like people who run: after you've done it a while it feels like hell to stop. Besides my books, check out on my website my paper on artists books NtABN.pdf and my walking tour of 1952 expatriate Paris.

Catherine (catarinacanhota) | 52 comments I also have a lot of ideas, but need to keep a roof over my head. I've had some poetry published and sent off an essay this summer, but I've found a way to hone my skills until I can devote more time to writing. In the after Christmas guilt over not having sent out cards and a yearly letter, I decided that I don't even like Christmas letters. They're boring to read and in an effort to cram a whole year into one page, they say nothing substantial about the person. In January this year, I started emailing a journal called News From the Prairie to friends and relatives. I also post it on my facebook wall. I send it out once a week (sometimes more, sometimes less) and include my thoughts and observations on whatever I feel like. I've gotten compliments on it from people that I never thought would enjoy it. A couple of friends in other countries that teach English use it in their English classes. It's satisfying for now and keeps me from letting my skills atrophy. I also save the emails as entries in my journal and even save some of the responses I get from other people.

Joe Terry (guadalupejoe) | 2 comments i have been studying the esoteric and the paranormal for the past 5 years heavily and find it fascinating... what i learned at college is really not what i find to be reality today... i have taken a lot of notes along the way. don't think i could improve on most of the good sites on the web or the books in print.... one of the most unusual things i can think of is the information i have gleaned from the shamans and psychics.....immho, that is where the truth lies....joe

Simon Chambers | 2 comments I do write, but I write military books about my time in Iraq and several other places over my twenty-two years in the army. I only have one book out right now called, Keepers of the Gateway to Hell.

message 113: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (porterak) I wish I had a talent for writing. But that is not the case so I just have to enjoy others writings.

message 114: by Tania (new)

Tania Poli (taniapoli) | 7 comments I write too. It's ike an extension of my job and helpful tips for those who don't know about personal shoppers (that's what I do:)) or prefer shopping themselves. Every new reader is such a joy - never thought I'd be THAT excited:)

Friends did enjoy it, two people (so far) I didn't know posted their 5-star reviews on Amazon which means a lot to me.
I always make sure it's fun to read not just boring advice (which happens in my genre) and practical in use.

Do you consider publishing or write for yourself?

PS: like your nickname:)

I write shopping guides kinda thing (well I got the first published 2 weeks ago:)) but with a lot of my professional advice on how to prepare shopping, handle trouble and a lot more. So that's why it's important to make it fun not "let me tell you darling" kinda thing:)
Have a look at my blog - there's quite a few excerpts out there: http://www.taniapoli.com

How about self-publishing? It's pretty easy, you don't have to go to those big guys anymore:) Sorry if I'm saying obvious things to you but you sound like somebody doesn't let you publish your work. What are you writing about?

My online writing group is great. I would never have been published without those people. They shredded my work and then helped me to fix it. You do need thick skin - they can be very harsh, but they are also the first ones to shout for joy with you.

Apryl Baker | 3 comments I've been writing since I was old enough to hold a crayon, or so my dad tells me. He says I used to scribble nonsense on paper and tell him these grand tales that were supposedly written in those squiggles.

Thankfully, I can say that I'm published. The Promise, book one of The Coven series is doing well. If anyone would like to see the book, you can check it out on my author page.

Here is the link to the book trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO2zTi...

Valeria Kogan (valeriakogan) | 4 comments I've been writing poetry and articles for years (first published when I was 14) but just had my first book published last week (yay!). I'm really very excited, but bracing myself for the reviews. My site is http://www.valeriakogan.com and I have a facebook page on https://www.facebook.com/valeriakogan... .

It's classed as romance, but it's quite far from typical romantic fiction.

message 124: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (smmrgrl) | 6 comments I use to write erotic fiction. Now that I am being pummeled by the media's coverage of Fifty Shades, I'm regretting giving it up years ago. I coulda been a contender!!
