Should I read it?

I've heard that its good and then other people tell me its boring. What should I believe?

This was a poorly written book. It had an interesting concept, and that is where the value in this book ended. Aside from an attempt to show the wicked witch of the west as not evil, the book had absolutly no purpose, no point and no deeper meaing.

If you love the musical 'Wicked', skip this book. I saw the show and immediately read the book. While the book is the basis for the show, it has a very different vibe. The book is very dark and the characters are not very likable. I hated this book. I kept waiting for it to get better and it never did.

This book was alright. I preferred the musical, but I was able to enjoy parts of the book as well. It's well written and easy to follow, just didn't appeal to me as much as the musical did. It was pretty weird at times. But I read it pretty quickly.

I couldn't force myself to finish this book. I had not connection with the characters.

Try reading it. If you're enjoying it, keep going, if you don't like it, put it down. I loved it, but Gregory Maguire seems to be an acquired taste. lol

I would recommend not to read it if you seen the musical and enjoyed it. Although the musical is base on the book, the book is quite different in it's on style and as Cristi said quite a bit darker - I'm not sure I would have thought Nessarose as a sweet little thing in the musical if I have read the book first ... and like some many said; it does drag on a bit in certain places.

I hope this review helped you, even if it's just a little.

BORING... and it skips around a lot. doesnt really leave you feeling satisfied

I found the book very enjoyable. I loved the twist on a classic (which I watched every Thanksgiving). And a story always has purpose if it brings pleasure to readers. But this book seems to bring up opposing views (to say the least!), so give it a try and see if you like it.

The first 80 pages were tough to get through after that I really enjoyed the book. I'm now a fan of the wicked witch and feel she is really misunderstood.

No, I tried to read it but never finished, I just didn't like it.....

I found this book very hard to get through. The book is the basis for Wicked the musical but very dark with a lot of vulgarity. I did finish it because it is a rare book I don't finish.

It takes a while to get into it, but I loved it over all. I hated the musical.

I love this book and have re-read it more than once. Then again, it was bound to appeal to me, as I always knew that the Wicked Witch was one of us.

I thought this book was extremely interesting; I tend to prefer stories that are "different" and not your usual mundane fare. If you don't like fantasy or a little science fiction, you probably won't like this book.

If you don't believe in "evil" then you also won't like this book - because the nature of evil is one of the major themes of the book. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the story got a bit bogged down toward the end. But it still kept my interest. This is definitely not just a story - it's great literature.

I liked this book. I am happy that I read it!

It was a great book!I reccomend reading it!

YES. The book is great. Be careful, there are two separate editions of the book. One rated for children and the other adults. Wicked led me into the three other books in the same series. I had a wonderful time in Oz

I really had to force myself to finish the book so I obviously did not enjoy it.
I thought the book dragged not just in one spot but throughout.

This is a must read. The book is amazing and well written. I loved it.

I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't stand it. I had to same reaction to another of his books, so I am not a fan of his. I love the idea and concept, but the final product was so horrible, in my opinion.

Didn't like the book at all. I had to read it for book club and forced my way through it. Sort of killed the warm fuzzies I had for the Wizard of Oz of my childhood (book and movie).

I read the book before I ever saw the musical. I struggled a bit with the book but enjoyed the concept and how the characters were developed. It is darker than the musical and would probably skip reading it if you've already seen the musical.

I thought it was a good book overall. There were some parts where it seemed to drag but it managed to keep my attention the whole way through. I LOVE the main character and the way he depicted her. Its definitely a book I would recommend.
