"We report on old art, new art, decorative art, the commercial and the non-commercial world—but we are very careful not to mix the last two up, as that lead to puffery, another of the besetting sins of art publications. We want to know and show where the power lies in the art world."

The Sustainable Preservation Initiative (SPI) seeks to preserve the world’s cultural heritage by providing sustainable economic opportunities to poor communities where endangered archaeological sites are located. SPI believes the best way to preserve cultural heritage is creating or supporting locally-owned businesses whose success is tied to that preservation. SPI’s grants provide a TWO for the price of ONE benefit: they create transformative economic opportunities for the local residents while saving archaeological sites for future generations to study and enjoy. SPI was incubated at and is strongly supported by the Archaeological Institute of America and the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA.

Around the world, theft of art and antiquities has reached epidemic proportions. Some six billion dollars’ worth of stolen heritage is trafficked every year. UNESCO says it may be the third biggest illegal trade after drugs and arms. There’s a 40-year-old UN convention that’s meant to stop the trade and return stolen treasures. But the authorities are struggling.
In this programme we go to Italy, Colombia and the UK to look at different aspects of this many-sided crime. And we see what police, museums and auction houses are doing to tackle it.

"For some 30 years, filmmaker Joe Medeiros has been captivated by the challenge to clarify the true motivations behind Vincenzo Peruggia’s 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre museum in Paris. In this charming documentary, he shares his journey of discovery with the joyful wit and irreverence which served him well as head writer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 19 comments As a consequence of my research for my art-crime series, I found myself needing to organize my growing collection of YouTube links to art crime-related videos. This turned into a YouTube channel: "Crimes Against Art". This channel now includes 203 videos about theft, forgery, cultural heritage crimes, Holocaust art, and counterfeiting luxury goods.

If you want to be notified when I add new videos, please subscribe. If you know of other videos that might fit (I tend to favor long-form pieces rather than short replays of news reports), please let me know. Enjoy.
