@April: O my goodness! I have the awesome Harper Teen copy and I can't wait to read it!

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments Well, tonight I plan on starting my first challenge book - The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins! I started this one once before and didn't get into it. Recently a friend on B&N whose tastes frequently coincide with my own, read it and loved it, so that, and finding this group, have inspired me to give it another try! I hope it goes better this time - wish me luck! It's long, too - almost 500 pages. The publication date is 1993, so I probably bought it shortly after that.

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Hannah, it IS SO GOOD. *throws flags everywhere* I've already read it now, but I just got the paperback I preordered in the mail today and I can't stop holding it. <3333

My goodness, about fifty pages into Eragon now; it's FINALLY picking up, hahah.

I have to admit it. If I start reading a book and it starts to get really bad, I just skip to the end because I have to know what happens. I just don't want to waste the time to figure it out. I am also a homeschool mom of 3. I love it but it leaves little time for myself. One book I wish I hadn't wasted time on was Gregor and the Code of Claw. She started the series really well but it ended really bad. I was reluctant to start any series for a while after that. I hear her Hunger Games books are good but I am not sure if I want to risk it.

message 157: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) See, I think my problem is that I'm so picky about what I'm going to read in the first place - I don't ever want to be in the position of having to put a book DOWN. And I assumed I'd be safe with Jane Austen, but again not realizing they were romances. At least next go-round I'll know that. ;) LOL

But yeah, I'm definitely not about skipping parts! Like Thalia, that makes my brain go AAAAHHHHHHHHH! ;)

And hello Amanda! Nice to meet another homeschooling mom on here! :) I think there's a few of us now.

message 158: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) So guess what? I'm over half through Silmarillion now. YAY, finally, go me!!!

Today I had a goal: to get through the chapter-after-next which contained the story of Beren and Luthien.

Something about not liking romances?? Yeah, I guess I just want some action in there. (And there's no kissy stuff. None. Zero. And I still liked it. ROFL)

So maybe it turns out I'm just a knight-in-shining-armor sort? Though Luthien certainly wasn't a helpless, forlorn maiden waiting in her lonesome tower. She saved his butt more than once! And all for love. <3 Now THAT is what I'm talkin' 'bout!!!

I totally know what you mean...and I have to admit I did that with Fountain Head...it was Atlas Shrugged again, with diff. characters...and I already knew how it would end...so I'll be honest, I did not waste my time!

I have Hunger Games on my list, but my mom is reading it and from what she's saying...it's not generally where I like to go in my books...hurting kids usually just upsets me so I try to stay away...She said she can't put it down, so maybe later...I probably WILL read them...just not yet! :)

message 160: by April (new)

April | 570 comments OH! and an off topic thing:) Well..not too off topic, it is about books! I would never ask any of you to buy (well of course, uless you're led to do so!)...but, if any of you enjoy historical fiction..you can sign up to win my hubby's book! The Norseman (The Norseman Chronicles) He's got a give-a-way on goodreads! Woot woot! :) That's my man!

message 161: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) GUESS what! I broke page 200 in Silmarillion today. I'm 2/3 done! Wahoo!!! Maybe I can finish this weekend, or at least by Monday. :)

message 162: by April (new)

April | 570 comments WoooHooo!!! GO Dalynn! You can totally do it! Just picture me with pompoms over here in the cheering section!

message 163: by Sydney Rae (new)

Sydney Rae I put a book called Malice on hold at the library after seeing a bunch of good reviews on here about it, and it just came in today! I'm super excited to try it out :)

message 164: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Silmarillion is only three hundred-ish pages? Oh man, I thought it was MUCH longer! Congrats Dalynn! :D

Sydney, sounds fun! :D

Only 2/5 of the way done with Eragon...slowly but surely, right? x)

message 165: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I'm with you Thalia...it's more exciting, but didn't get a chance to read yesterday at all, sigh! But hopefully for the next half hour here i can get a few pages in...slow and steady, slow and steady!

message 166: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments My goal was to finish it last night and just blaze through the last three hundred pages, but I also wanted to watch Fahrenheit 451 to complete a "Book to Movie" challenge I'm taking. Fell asleep an hour in and woke up at the strangest part (that wasn't in the book)! So I gave up, realized I was exhausted, and didn't end up reading Eragon at all! OTL The Stake Valentine's dance is tonight and I'm going, but when I get home, no matter how exhausted, I will not rest until Eragon is compelete!

So who's reading Clockwork Angel? I'd love to hear your thoughts when you're finished!

message 167: by April (new)

April | 570 comments You Go! Thalia! I may or may not get some afternoon reading in...but tonight is LotR, so I'll take that over Eragon right now! :)

Hmmm..Clockwork Angel is on my list, but I've got some other things to read through first...did you like it?

message 168: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments April, well, Clare's other series, the Mortal Instruments, literally changed me. I read all three in four days, and I was a shell of numbness and too many emotions to feel all at once. I was actually home sick for two days because my stomach was so twisted up over it! Clockwork Angel is the first in her prequel series to TMI, called the Infernal Devices. To me, the first one wasn't as good as her other books, but read it just for the sequel, which is Clockwork Prince, which brought back ALL those feelings. Oh my goodness, I couldn't feel anything after I finished CP. I don't know how I'll last until December for the third book to come out!

message 169: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I know how you feel! I had that problem with Karen Marie Moning's Fever series...she quit at a point that about KILLED me...and I had to wait TWO stinking years (but bonus to that, I got to read the whole series again when the last one came out!) I'll have to wait until I'm ready for that much emotion! Thanks for your opinion:) I love hearing what other people think about books I want to read or have read!

message 170: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) The book is like 385 pages, but the last 80 or so are tables and notes. The text is only 304 pages...

and I've only 19 to go! Just the section on the Rings of Power and the Third Age... which I'm most excited to read!

But hubby didn't get off work in time to take boys to scouts, except my oldest who was late. Now it's time to cook dinner, so it may be that finishing Silmarillion is all I'll accomplish tonight. Eragon tomorrow I guess. :/

BUT!! I will not sleep til Silmarillion be finished! ;) Kidding me??? 19 pages??? LOL

I've just started Pillars of the Earth and it's a bit of a biggie... whilst I'm glad my dad had it stored on his bookshelf I do wish I had it in eBook form so it'd be lighter to take to work with me - made my cycle yesterday feel rather weighed down, I'm sure my rucksack was groaning!

Congrats Ashley - I do love winning free books :)The last one I received in the mail was a 'soon to be released' copy to review for Waterstones... great feeling getting random parcels ;)

I've finally written down all the books I need to read before I can buy/download any more - it's a long bloomin' list :S I miss Waterstones already:(

Hayley, I love your quote: "great feeling getting random parcels." (And I, too, have a list of all the books I promised myself I would read before buying more. Well, except for that one book that just came out, which I simply must buy . . .)

Thanks Daleen -it's so true tho', I didn't know I'd won until I received this random parcel in the post!

Those books - all ones that I've told myself (or been informed) need to be read and I've gone after getting them with great enthusiasm and good intentions - and then just never got round to them, it's terrible! I will stick with it tho', I must for my bookshelf's sake!

Nothing wrong with a bit of dust on a book - adds character (and saves time dusting) ;D The next book I'm really looking forward to getting into (after Pillars) is Game Of Thrones - really hope I enjoy it :D

So now I'm reading Choker by Elizabeth Woods , which is another one of my dusty books. (:

woohoo! yay for finishing books and getting free ones in the mail :)

It seems like life has been hectic and I'm not reading nearly as much as I used to! I'm only on page 170 of Hunchback of Notre Dame and I've been reading it for 2 weeks *head desk* I like it better than Les Mis so far.

message 184: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I've set my goal at 10 books. I am just trying to finish Bessie already. It's a biography on the life of blues singer Bessie Smith. I've been reading it for months. It's interesting but I just have a hard time with biographies, for some reason.

Great Job Thalia...as if there were ever any doubt! :)

message 186: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments Yay for everyone who's completed their first book! Great job!!!

Last night I finished The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, much as I love to read, I am a fairly slow reader, and I seem to have chosen some fairly long books for this challenge! Next I think I will read 101 Things You Didn't Know About Jane Austen. It seems like it should be a quick read, although it is 230 pages of small print.

message 187: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments My goodness, no wonder I haven't read my dusty books yet. So far, they've almost all been terrible! I'm more than halfway through Choker and it's so bad. I'm making sticky note messages to myself on what things to point out in my review!

I need my dusty books to pick up soon. OTL

I agree with April - The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are great, and so is Poe! You have those to look forward to!

If you want any recommendations on what Poe to read (or are you going to read the whole thing - it's enormous!?), just ask!

message 190: by Thalia (new)

I am going to read the whole thing! We're having a group read of it starting in March, with two short stories per week, I believe. (:

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I finished Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate last night (starting at 1:30am, since I decided to watch Attack of the Clones after having seen Phantom Mencace in theatres again, hahah), and it was great! I liked it much more than I thought I would, even if it had its little flaws. (:

Unfortunately though, none of my February challenge reads are dusty books as well, so let's hope my challenge widget doesn't tell me I'm falling behind, hahah.

EDIT:
Nevermind! I decided to up my challenge to twenty dusty books, and random.org actually chose the book I'm reading right now to be one of my dusty books, hahah. Woo hoo for random convienience. (:

I really wish Pillars of the Earth was on my ebook - it's so hefty that putting it in my rucksack for my cycle to & from work every day is pretty unfeasible and even if I do I can't sneak it out whenever I want. I need to make more progress on this book, it's great but most of my reading time during the week was when I had to wait for my work computer to sort itself out!

There is a site, that you can sign up for a free 14 day trial (and get Pillars free) but I don't know how you feel about giving a credit card number (that won't be charged) and then cancelling? But, here's the link if you're interested...I haven't tried it yet, because I hate trying to remember to cancel before my 14 days are up....but it may be worth it to save you some shoulder surgery in the future carrying that lug around! :)

Thanks April - but I already have it in book form so can't justify getting another copy, even if it is free! Plus I'm a bit like you - I hate having to remember to cancel in time, it almost never happens :S

Thanks for thinking of my shoulders though :)

message 198: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I was just going to do this for physical books, but decided to put audio books on as well. I count it as a dusty book if I've had it for longer than 3 years.

Here is what I've recently finished:

The Martian Child (audio, 2007)
Shark Trouble (audio, 2004)
Bessie (hardcover)
The Book of Pirates (audio, 2004)

message 199: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Alright. Let's get started here. I'm currently reading Divergent by Veronica Roth and The Help right now.

But I did just finish a Dean Koontz novel (Watchers). Anyone have any suggestions of another good Koontz novel cause I loved that one.

Also, I'm curious to hear people's opinions about Divergent. I'm about half way done. It comes across to me as a mix of The Hunger Games and The Giver (with a little Fight Club thrown in). I really do love it. Curious to hear other's thoughts about it.

message 200: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) I need to remember to read some Koontz this year! I only read one of his, back when I was pregnant in 2010, but I LOVED it and really want to read more by him. I'll have to remember what I read and go rate it so I can get rec's on it. :)
