message 52: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Well, shouldn't that be "WINBATFTAO"? x)

Oh, I remember! GPOY anybody? Ahhh, I don't know what it means!

message 53: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Whoops! ummm...and you've got me on that one...GPOY...Get Pink on Yourself? Me=clueless!

message 54: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments UrbanDictionary says: "Gratuitous Picture Of Yourself".

Whaaaaat? People always post that on pictures and stuff on tumblr, but it still doesn't make much sense to me!

message 55: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Also, who's the one reading Dorian Gray this month?! I chose that as my classic book last year for English and I L O V E D it! Except for chapter eleven, hahah. (:

Anyyyywaaaay, if you ever want somebody to talk to about it. (:

message 56: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Dorian Gray isn't on my official list, but I saw someone mention a challenge from the group "Bookish" (which I applied to but haven't had a response concerning) that included all of the League of Extraordinary Men books. Since several are on my tbr (or at least on my shelf LOL) anyway, I thought it would be fun!

Still tapping my fingers for a possible Bookish entry though. ;) But I'm all about reading extraordinary men this year if I can swing it!

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Hmm, am not reading Dorian Gray this month but will be at some point.

Not only have I got this challenge for this year but I've started thinking about my challenge for next year too - even got the new bookshelves ready and starting to fill them!

message 58: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Dorian Gray is on my TBR, but not for this challenge...so many books, so little reading time!

message 59: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I feel like all of us do a lot of challenges, hahah. This is actually my entire list of challenges!

http://thaliasbooks.tumblr.com/post/9...

message 60: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) OH my goodness, Thalia. You're going to read all that just this year???

message 61: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Oh, probably not, hahah. The first time I posted on that list was like, June of last year? I usually just read something and hope it's on one of my challenges! And then I make sure one book is on several different lists to knock more out at one time, hahah.

message 62: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Oh good. I'm feeling all great about my 52 books in a year (even though I'm still on the first one...), and you have this crazy list going.

I just pinned your blog! :o This pinterest thing is going to eat me alive.

message 63: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Hahah, if you look rather closely, it's really mostly the same twenty books over and over again in different lists, to make it look like I'm doing a lot. (; Eragon is on like, at least ten of those lists, hahah.

Oh, thanks! I've heard great things about pinterest, but I don't know how to sign up, hahah.

message 64: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) You have to have someone invite you!

message 65: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Ahhh pintrest addict here! And yup....holy smokers on that list Thalia...you've got a lot of great books. You'll have to tell me what you think of Zombies vs. Unicorns....I had fun with that one. Good luck! They may be re-listed but its still a lot.

If you want on pintrest...let meknow...id be happy to invite you.

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I might have to throw in the towel. I just finished Clockwork Prince; I don't know if I can even fathom trying to read another book right now. Or ever.

Oh my heartttttt. *breaks*

I think there's an entire therapy group for Clockwork Prince. ((((hugs)))) I read it and I thought it was sad but...huh. Don't know. I'm even "Team Will" but i couldn't see how it would end any other way. Plus, I like sad stories. I don't mock your pain though. Quite the wringer that Cassie put her readers through!

message 68: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Oh goodness, I need to find this therapy group!
I know it couldn't have gone any other way; that's what bothers me most about it. D:

Oh well, I'm moving onto The Lovely Bones, which I thought was on my list, but evidently is it. OTL. Jessica, I like sad stories, too! Give me a tragedy over a happy ending any day of the week!

If you like tragic YA, try Everneath. It was beautifully tragic. Epic. Loved it :) Everneath (Everneath, #1) by Brodi Ashton

I've finished Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne !! Thank hecky-peck for that one :) I'm now on King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard which is reasonably short before I'm gonna move onto Dracula then, apart from the LoEG graphic novels, that's the bare bones of that challenge sorted :D

Some of the 'extras' to the challenge do fall into my dusty shelf tho' so will happily read them :)

I'm not sure how I feel about YA tbh, it was good up until 17/18 but now I just feel that, as good as some storylines are, there's still too much YA emotion and angst that I just don't wanna hafta read about, I did my own teen angst rebellious thing so reading someone else's annoys me :S I now prefer reading an 'A' book (see what I did there ;D) with mature - not needing to 'grow up' during the book - responses to things :)

message 71: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Wow...you guys are all fast readers! I'm only on about chapter 15 of WH...I'm liking it (I'm kind of with Hayley here...I've read alot of YA...and I started Lament, I had to shelve it(for now)...I'm tired of whiney kids right now, I needed some adult time in my books! Not sure that Heathcliff, Catherine or Mr. Lockwood are much better, but it's fun!) Clockwork Prince is on my list...looks like that one is gonna have to wait...I've traded my ways for the lovely tragic ending, for...I really actually like the happily ever after a bit now! Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to them, just later! I need some inspirational stuff first. And with that...provided I don't fall asleep this afternoon...I plan on spending some more time at Wuthering Heights...(late night with sick kids, phew!)

You know what's funny? When I was a teenager I hated YA because it wasn't challenging enough for me. But now that I'm an adult I like the escapist entertainment of YA. But I have to balance it with classics or my head will explode! So good news - I'm starting my first Dusty bookshelf book! YAY! The Hunchback of Notre-Dame I'm really excited to read more Hugo!

message 73: by Thalia (last edited Jan 29, 2012 08:37PM) (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Jessica, Everneath was tragic? Oh mannnnn. This year's group of books coming out will be the death of me, hahah.

Really? I like young adult not because I'm a teenager but because I like watching characters grow up, find themselves. And I especially like reading tragic, angsty, really sad books when I'm feeling down on my own life, because it allows me to feel connected to somebody else's problems, even if they are just made up. Because at least if I'm crying over a book, I'm not crying about my own life. (;

The Lovely Bones is alright so far...has anybody here read it before? It's kind of detached and skips around a lot, hahah. I'm trying to get into the grove of it, but Sebold has built a really weird sort of voice!

message 74: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
Well, to be fair YA wasn't as good in the 90s (when I was a teenager) as it is today. I read a lot of classics as a teenager and every Star Wars expanded universe book I could find. LOL

I haven't read The Lovely Bones, but my sister-in-law said it was kind of weird.

I'm starting Hunchback of Notre Dame. The beginning starts off with the author finding the word "fate" on the side of the cathedral. This forebodes a happy ending - I know it ;)

message 75: by April (new)

April | 570 comments You guys make me giggle! (speaking of tragic endings...I'm not thinking things are gonna go so well at WH!...just got this feeling, it can't end well)

Well..clink*clink* . . here's to sad stories with tragic endings! Maybe I'll read a joke book before Paradise Lost! LOL:D

message 76: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Hahaha; heaven knows we should space out the drama with something light! I might have to throw in My Life Undecided somewhere between all these heavy books.

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Jessica said... When I was a teenager I hated YA because it wasn't challenging enough for me. But now that I'm an adult I like the escapist entertainment of YA. But I have to balance it with classics or my head will explode!

Yes. Exactly that. All of it. Except for the Star Wars part. For me, it was Nancy Drew, but that was more middle school than high school. In high school I was... erm... otherwise entertained, for the most part. ;)

Yet, and a *sigh* here, I guess I was not up to clout for the "Bookish" group as I've not heard a peep from them. Hayley - any chance you could PM me the LoEM challenge details? Then I can do it on my own, even if they don't want me in their group. LOL (Though, to be honest, I'd still love in and might check with them this week.)

Still reading Silmarillion. So far behind on my challenge. Maybe some of the YA and cozy mysteries will help me catch up later this year. LOL

message 78: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Do you like Silmarillion so far? I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a copy, as I love all things LotR! :D

Oh my gosh Dalynn, you make me laugh!! :D I hope you get into Bookish!

Silmarillion gets better as you go on. The beginning is a LOT of names and creation stuff, but there's a lot more action later on. You can do it! Plus Beren and Luthien is so romantic.

message 80: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Yes, I finally got to the story part, and am enjoying it. Still, two toddlers running around the house doesn't make for a setting conducive to reading anything with a lot of substance... which is sad, really. LOL

And I already know most of the story from playing my game! I was the narrator in a play we did about Beren and Luthien even.

But yeah, I'm excited about getting into it and am not going to rush it just to finish. Loving every thick little chapter!

Although I did finish the YA historical fiction we were reading for our homeschooling today. I'm debating whether or not to count it... it's a Newberry winner, so I might. Not sure. LOL

message 81: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Ok seriously on WH! WHAT...I'm exactly 50% through and those people are wacked! I don't want to post spoilers for any who have not but want to read...

So, some things happened, that I didn't think were going to happen until the end...so now I'm so curious to see where the second half of this book is gonna go!

I am thankful I was not born into either of those families! Sheesh:)

message 82: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) HAHAHA okay so that's a great teaser, April. Makes me curious, and a little more interested. I've seen quite a few not-so-happy reviews on WH, so I'll be looking to see what you think as you continue to move through it. At least it isn't BORING, sounds like. I still. can't. hack. Jane Austen! :x (But um, don't tell the Bookish folks that! AND I got in, as of today! WOOT!!)

message 83: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments April, if ever you have a spoiler, you can just do the HTLM for spoilers! (view spoiler)

I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of WH someday!

message 84: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Thalia...THAT'S AWESOME! I've gotta learn how to do that!~

Dalynn...I guess it depends on WHY you can't 'hack' Jane Austen?...I liked Pride and Prejudice and I did like Mansfield Park, but that one took me longer to get into...WH follows in that vein of GREAT vocab! I love all the incredible words they use...it's like reading for fun, but having a vocab lesson at the same time! I recommend getting for ebook if you can (much easier to just tap a word and get a meaning...I mean, you can totally tell the context, but I like to know 'excactly' sometimes!) So, if that's the reason, you probably won't get into this either...but as for her writing style, it's a bit different...sometimes a wee bit hard to follow as to who is talking, but you figure it out pretty fast....and the tension..SHEESH! It starts at the very beginning...and it really hasn't stopped yet! But, the good news...if you thought you had some tension at family gatherings...you'll think nothing of it after reading WH!

message 85: by April (new)

I'm just practicing!

message 86: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Thank you Thalia!!! Now I have to post some spoilers just so I can use that..UBER COOL!

message 87: by Dalynn (last edited Feb 01, 2012 11:05AM) (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Oh, nothing like that! LOL And to be totally fair, Sense & Sensibility is the only one I tried. I have one of those big, bound volumes with all of her novels in the same book, and S&S was just first. So, when I try again (next year, ahem..) I'll probably start with P&P instead since that one seems to be on all the lists, etc. I'm hoping I'll like it better.

But no, the writing itself was great, and I could totally understand the characters - don't even remember having any vocabulary issues (so there weren't any big ones, anyway). I'm just not a big fan of romances in the first place, and hadn't realized that's what it was supposed to be. I kept looking for a plot... silly me! :P

ETA: So my biggest issue was just that I was BORED with it. I'd heard, I think I heard anyway, that WH is also a romance. So I've been a little hesitant based on my JA experience of being bored. Glad to hear that it actually has something interesting going on. LOL

message 88: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Well, Dalynn...it may be considered a romance, but coming from someone who adores romances (well at least time traveling highlander ones!) this is not your typical romance at least! Again, I don't want to give too much away...but so far I guess I would consider it a Shakespearean tragedy type of going on...more like Romeo and Juliet..certainly not a whole lot of huggin' and kissin' goings ons for sure! Now, I'm not finished yet, but I don't see a whole lot of romancing going on...(there is one place...that could happen, but that will remain to be seen!)

I guess to be honest, not sure what the "plot" is per se...it's more about these people and their story/their lives...but there is mystery in the background and that's what keeps me going! I hope I haven't given too much away!

I always find it hard to review books...because you want to say why you liked it or didn't...but I hate ruining things for people...now I just need to find a reason to use Thalia's awesome little html move!

Oh, and I do adore the word usage! We just don't talk like this anymore...fantastic sentences and great words!
I will say, I hate the parts where one of the servents talk...ugh, I guess he's supposed to be uneducated, but goodness me, I can't understand half of the words that he's supposed to be sayin'!~ That part is driving me batty...good thing he hasn't had too awful much to say so far! But, I am enjoying it so far...looking forward to see where she takes me!

message 89: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Really, the day I learned about spoiler HTML, I wanted to cry with joy. Also the slash-type one. This is my favorite thing EVER.

April, for my reviews, I always do a "mini" one, so people have the general gist of why I liked/didn't like a book, and then I go into specific "What I Liked" and "What I Didn't Like" sections with a spoiler warning. I feel like that works the best for the people reading. (:

Whaaaa, I love romances. All kinds, every kind! (Well, I mean, I don't ready anything steamy. OTL) Which I suppose is ironic; there's a romance novelist who has my exact real first and last name. If I ever want to be published, I must do so with my safe, non-steamy pseudonym. OTL

(view spoiler)

Dalynn, what does ETA mean?! I mean, "estimated time of arrival" I know, but that didn't work in the context. x)

message 90: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Ahhh..and here I thought I was gonna get to learn your pseudonym...non-steamy of course! That's pretty cool that you share the name of an author! We got all excited when my husband wrote his book . . . his name is Jason Born (ok, it's spelled different, but hey!) And I married right into the April Born (view spoiler) It can be my dancer name! Hahaha!

and you have to fess up Dalynn...I didn't get ETA either, but I just went with it:)

message 91: by Thalia (last edited Feb 01, 2012 04:45PM) (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Hahah, you already know it! My pseudonym is Thalia Anderson. (: My real name is boring. OTL

Jason Born! That IS exciting! I'd read anything by him, just for the name! (;

I knew I couldn't be the only one who didn't understand ETA, hahahah.

message 92: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Oh and Thalia...I HEART romances too! . . .and I'm not a harlequin girl (at least the covers always made them seem as if they'd be steamy!)..steamy isn't my bag...although sometimes to get the kind of stories I want they do go that way, occasionally! I started with Jude Deveraux A Knight in Shining Armor Ahhhh...haven't been able to get enough time traveling knights/highlanders since!

message 93: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments WHAT. Instand add. Give me a knight and I'm set for life. You're talking to the ultimate Arthurian fangirl, so anything knightly/medieval just makes me insanely happy. (:

message 94: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I know, right! Knights, castles...defending the maidens honor! I haven't read that book since I was about 14...and I remeber every detail! If/when you read it, you have to tell me what you think! I LOVED THAT BOOK! . . and thus sprouted the need to read time-traveling romances about men who care more for their women and her honor/well being than they do EVERYTHING else! . . .Maybe it's time I re-read it!

message 95: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments My goodness, it's number fifteen in its series?! Daaaannnnggggg!

message 96: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I read them all out of order...I promise you won't be lost, the are all stories within themselves...but they all are about the same family line, the Mongomerys! You do not have to read the otehr 15 first!

message 97: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Oh, good, hahaha. I was like, "Oh man. What have I just committed to?!" x)

message 98: by April (new)

April | 570 comments The only problem I forsee is that you'll WANT to read the rest of them! ;) But hey, what's life if it isn't full of books?!?

message 99: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Huzzah, it sure is! (; Still, fifteen is a long series! The only problem with that is my compulsive need to own my books. I seriously can't even borrow from the library. And if I borrow from a friend, I need to own the book ASAP. My bookshelves are like a map of where I've been in my reading, even if I ended up hating the book, hahah.
