Pandora Richardson I've read them all. You can't really appreciate "Interview" in my opinion until you've finished "Lestat" then you have to read "Queen" which is one of the best in the series. I also loved "Body Thief", "Memnoch", "Merrick" and "Pandora". The rest were read mainly to finish the series, there's some good stuff in there, but without Lestat, most are lacking. You'll want to strangle Louis and Quinn IMO and "The Vampire Armand" to me was like watching paint dry for most of the book.

Overall, outside of Anita Blake, I don't see how anyone can understand modern vampire "literature" if that's even appropriate next to Rice's works, without this series. I wish she'd write more Lestat to give Jean Claude, Eric Northman, and others a run for their money.

I love books I really do, but I threw Tale of the Body Thief against a wall.
Having said that about the series, I might suggest you read around the seris too. My favourate book is Pandora. She is such an interesting character, and it is a really well written book.
I also read and HATED Anne Rice's witch book of New Orleans. It started out great (I like it when witches are the good guys) and by the end became a very born again rant against anything but Christianity. It didn't make sense, the charaters just warped and morphed and I hated it.
Anne Rice's earlier work and even Tale of the Body Thief had it's redeeming momments, but her later stuff was so unrecognisabley BAD and it lost all her colour pallet (which I love) and her sense of perfum to draw you into the world.

Nik If you like the twilight books, then no.
I do have the entire collection of these books however and couldn't part with a single one.
These vampires are not nice, there are some horrible parts and there is a lot of soul serching and there is a lot of grit.
the only reason these vampires may try to seduce you is to take your blood. they will not fall in love with you.
There is a lot of history in these books and a lot of cross refrences and a whole world is created.

Annie I have read the first 4....I liked them. There beautiful old style vamps....my fave was #2 The Vampire Lestat.....It has been a long time since I read them, and I know there are more in the series now, and am planning a reread soon, I actually have Interview with the vampire in my audible library now... Give it a shot, the books are way way better than the movies!!! :)))))

Jennifer I read the series when it first came out; much of what others have said in regards to the genre having changed since then (with series like "Twilight" for example). I would recommend "Tale of the Body Thief" if you want to read just one in the series. It can stand on it's own just fine. If you DO like Vampire novels, these are good; just definitely not "Twilight"!

Anne Rice also wrote several historical novels, even before these, "Feast of All Saints" is my personal favorite. I stopped reading her newer stuff several years ago, just found that things started to be very repetitive.

Hope this helps!

Francene Carroll There are some books that take hold of your imagination and don't let go. This series did that for me. It's been quite a few years since I read it, and I'm not sure how it has stood the test of time, but I completely enjoyed it and would recommend highly.

Eternal Hunger

Chris-james Melchizedek I enjoyed it. Particularly Queen of the Damned. The whole origin of vampires and how they were created was great. I'd recommend reading Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned in Sucession

Rebecca I love these books :-)

Lisa Hall StrÖm wrote: "I wasn't sure if it was worth reading or not. I see alot of mixed reviews on here."

The first two books are very similar, same basic story, two different perspectives. Queen of the Damned is a hot mess full of characters. I liked her Witching Hour series better.

message 163: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I read the first one and have all of the books on my Kindle. I found the first one ok, but slow in parts too. The film is much better than the book. I have deleted all the books off my kindle as I think I wont enjoy them if the first one is anything to go by.

message 164: by Chrisna (last edited Sep 18, 2012 11:41PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Chrisna Anne Rice will forever have a special place in my readers heart for this series, as well as the Mayfair witches. I had my first severe book hangover after this series lol. She just has a way of telling a story..... If you havent read it you have to! Push through Interview with a Vampire - I hated Lestat in that - and then the real story starts in my opinion...and read it all (even if you have to forgive the last one or two books for not living up to the standard of the series)

message 165: by Kat (new) - rated it 1 star

Kat They may be okay for some people but unfortunately i am not one of them. I did try to give these books a try but they just seemed a bit boring and drawn out, not able to hold my attention for very long.

message 166: by D (new)

D I have pretty much read all old Anne Rice vampire books and Witches {MayFair} that in todays market seem really tame. Her books are not all sparkly with all that hot vampire sex that seems to be in many. They read kind of what I call old school style of writing, that many see them as boring.I love her books but even I find them boring after reading my K Sparks series.

Matthew For me, "Interview with the Vampire" was an instant classic as it has the depth to survive. It is a modern, existentialist horror story that deserves a place alongside Shelley's "Frankenstein" and Stevenson's "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". The rest of the series were enjoyable enough, but I think they are a best decribed as historical fiction.

I would recommend reading "Interview with the Vampire" only.

message 168: by Alia (last edited Oct 02, 2012 11:25PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alia Mustafa My advice to you would be to read the first book in the series before you invest in the entire collection.

"Interview with the Vampire" was the first novel I have ever read cover to cover and I fell in love with the characters instantly.

message 169: by Tracey (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tracey Hunt i have read the whole series. normally i hate vampire books, too juvenille. Anne Rice on the other hand has the ability to write great books, and this series no exception. you will fall in love and hate for the vampire lestat. very intellectually written.

message 170: by Lindsay (last edited Oct 02, 2012 01:31PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lindsay I would recommend them, yes. When I was a slightly angsty teenager I ate these up. I thought they were fantastic. Granted, I now realize that they're not the best books ever written but they are still strongly enjoyable.

I will admit to thinking Blackwood Farm was just silly, though. And I couldn't even finish Blood Canticle... I'm a fan of the earlier books in the series.

message 171: by Laura (new) - rated it 5 stars

Laura I loved the Movie but no Series Please!

Michael Brown I'd recommend them as diverting reads, though strangely the first one is the one I found the least impressive and the first half hour of the film was dreadful until it perked up... just like the books did. They got comparatively better and even quite good at times. I still have a few waiting to be read and don't feel dread about it. If you want to read the best of Rice though, get yourself "The Witching Hour".

Michael Brown Jennifer wrote: "I have Fevre Dream. I borrowed it from a friend and have not read it yet. Is is really that good?"

If no one answered this for you yet, as it looks like you are yet to read it, the answer is YES, with big glittery bells on,

message 174: by Renee (new)

Renee I never read Interview with a Vampire... but I watched the movie... then I read all the rest of Anne Rice's books!
So I cannot comment on this book, however, I can comment on all the following books. Excellent. I like how the stories go on and on.
I would not recommend for the light or faint hearted readers, but for readers who enjoy a good story regardless of whether it is scary or not.

message 175: by Renee (new)

Renee BTW, I recall reading Queen of the Damned years ago and not being able to put it down. I was so disappointed when I saw the movie. What was that? The books was so good. Unfortunately, it ususally takes a lot to make the movie as good as the book.
It would be awesome if they made a Witching Hour movie.

message 176: by Fawn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Fawn I loved this book and the rest of the series. Probably one of my favorite book series. The movies, I thought were very disappointing.

Gabrielle Not a fan. Way too much with the sex and the ick factor. Loved the movie, but the books are just too much with the porn factor.

message 178: by Becky (new) - rated it 4 stars

Becky Rosenson The whole series would probably be hard to get through. I would recommend the first three in the series. After that I lost interest in it for a while, then read a couple more that I liked and a few I didn't care much for. I have a hard time finishing the books when I really don't like the characters that much.

message 179: by Traci (new) - rated it 1 star

Karyn I found the book interesting and enthralling loved the background and time period of France and New Orleans.

message 182: by Amber (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amber I just cant! get into anne rice. This book was dull to me. A friend of mine said it was because it was from the wrong vampires perspective but I tried reading the vampire lestat and I still couldnt.

message 183: by Mara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mara The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice is not geared towards high school age.

When this came out Anne helped to renew the vampire in literature. I know its hard to believe, but there was a time when monsters, vampires, werewolves were not as popular as they are today.

Now there is a glut of vampire stories, some horrible some good, but Anne Rice should be a staple on any vampire lovers book shelf.

I thought the story was original and fresh and progressed nicely till the Queen of the Damned. That was the last one I read I think.

message 184: by Kerry (last edited Oct 16, 2012 03:14PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kerry I really enjoyed first, Interview with the Vampire(1976). Felt second was worthy sequel (my favorite)despite the intervening years, Vampire Lestat(1985). I was mixed about third book, The Queen of the Damned (1988). Did not care for anything after book 3. Unless you're giddy for the series stop at a trilogy.

message 185: by Zoran (new) - rated it 2 stars

Zoran Krušvar To me, this was the worst piece of vampire fiction that ever got popular, until "Twilight" came out.

I considered Rice's vampires to be too soft, too emo and too whiny. I never thought that there will come a day when they'll look tough :-)))

I second that. If vampire looks appealing, it's not scary anymore.

message 187: by Misty (last edited Oct 22, 2012 11:48PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Misty Loved them all! Plus the Mayfair Witches and the three or four that followed the origional five.
My favorite, hands down, is Memnoch the Devil. All the characters are enduring with unique and lively personalities. The stories really jump off the page and Anne Rice paints a vibrant picture in the reader's mind.
People who don't appreciate the series: religious zealouts and/or haters. Try not to drink any Hater-aide before you read them and you'll be sure to enjoy them. (also, don't ruin them by watching the movies. especially Queen of the Damned, which was very loosely based on the second and third books in this series. Anne Rice didn't even endorse that movie.)

message 188: by Rw (new) - rated it 3 stars

Rw Zoran, even though I read the whole series, I agree with you completely. I always said that she didn't know how to write for a man. All the men came off exactly like you said.

Also "liking this" Renee you said it best! Just because these vampires were pretty didnt mean they were not evil...they did a good share of killing. These books open me up to parnormal

Lestat De Lioncourt
"Evil is a point of view," "We are immortal. And what we have before us are the rich feasts that conscience cannot appreciate and mortal men cannot know without regret. God kills, and so shall we; indiscriminately He takes the richest and the poorest, and so shall we; for no creatures under God are as we are, none so like Him as ourselves,"

message 193: by Laura (new) - rated it 5 stars

Laura So true. :)

Tricia Drammeh I would recommend anything by Anne Rice. This series is incomparable. Love it.

Jasmine I LOVE the Vampire Chronicles, but I guess readers need to keep in mind that Anne Rice started this series in the 80's a time before Jeanine Frost, Katie Mac Alister, Charline Harris and other popular authors of today started writing their sexy steamy vamp books that we love so much!!

message 196: by Misty (new) - rated it 5 stars

Misty Laura wrote: "the book and the movie were just fine... Leave it a lone!"

Interview with the Vampire (the movie) is excellent. Queen of the Damned (the movie) BOMBED, which is really sad considering the book is amazing. But they tried to blend The Vampire Lestat (which deserves its own movie) with Queen of the Damned. And Queen of the Damned had so much content they couldn't fit it all into one movie. Plus, they got the ending wrong. So, in my opinion, they MURDERED Queen of the Damned. I mean, couldn't they at least get a REAL red head to play the lead, Jesse?
Look, the book gives a detailed explaination of where Vampires come from, who the first Vampires are, and why they exist. The movie touches on none of that.
And in my opinion, Tom Cruise played a much more convincing role of Lestat than Stewart Townsend ever dreamed. Its only saving grace: Aaliyah is hot and sexy in her final role before she died in 2001.

Don't believe me? Ask Anne Rice: http://www.facebook.com/search/result...

Tricia Drammeh I didn't see the movie, Queen of the Damned. Not all books should be made into a movie. Interview was great, though.

message 199: by Nermin (last edited Oct 24, 2012 06:29AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nermin I don't know, I have mixed feelings about this series. This books are certainly superior to other vampire books I've read. They are really deep, beautifully written and very sad sometimes. First three books were absolutely amazing. AMAZING. the fourth one was good too except for the last few pages. i hated the way the fourth book ended. fifth was unbearable for me. i finished that book and said goodbye to the series. i've seen many positive reviews about the Memnoch the Devil but personally didn't enjoy the book at all. there are still a bunch of books in the series that i've not read and i don't intend to change that fact. but that's just me though.
