Must agree with you on this, Sharon. Let the Right One In is a must read for those who like their vampires cruel and vicious as opposed to sparkly and romantic. I enjoyed the book immensely.

message 102: by Todd (new) - rated it 5 stars

Todd Let the Right One In, in my opinion, was one of the benchmarks in the genre. Like Interview With the Vampire, it was original in that it highlighted a different theme in the vampire legend that had not (or not recently) been explored. Let the Right One In, for me, was about the solitude and isolation of eternal life. Interview was about crushing existential depression. Both are equally valid and original for me.

I would agree that Let the Right One In is more 'horrifying' given it's constantly grinding, grim atmosphere.

Caron Rider I only read 2 or 3 of them, but enjoyed them. I think someone mentioned they kind of drag and I can agree, but definitely worth a read. My favorite book she's written though was The Mummy. It's a stand alone (unless she's added to it and I just don't know), and it is excellent!

message 104: by Vicki (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vicki G I'd recommend the books. The movie wasn't as intense as the books.

Cecilia Hey, Caron, I really loved "The Mummy", too! I don't think she wrote any sequels to it, though. Too bad...it was an awesome story!

Sorry guys...got off the vampire thread...:>

Kelly| Just Another Horror Reader Without a doubt I would recommend this series. Anne Rice is the QUEEN of modern vampire fiction. The series is one of the absolute best.

Nope, no sequels. To bad, I always wondered what Cleopatra ended up doing! lol

Julia Jenkins No. Too soppy.

Dianne Kurucz Did you read it ? If you did what did you think?

message 110: by Dolly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dolly Markel I had a little trouble reading Interview with a Vampire. I didn't like it as much as some of my friends did. But I ABSOLUTELY LOVED The Vampire Lestat. I think it is one the best Vampire books, ever. I read the Queen of the Damned, but it seemed kind of silly. In fact, I read all of the books, but some were better than others. The Body Thief was GREAT!

If you love Paranormal Romance and are used to reading that, it may take a while to get into these books since they are not really romances. But they are richly written, and there's something about Lestat... The first sexy vampire.

message 111: by Dolly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dolly Markel I know I already commented, but I wanted to add that something I remember being particularly impressed by was how Rice took the absolute villain of book #1 and turned him into such a great and beloved character in book #2. In fact, he became the central character of the rest of the series. It was something I had never experienced in books back then. Romance writers have the villains turn good guys in subsequent books all the time now. And Anne Rice did such a wonderful job of it.

message 112: by Becky (new) - rated it 5 stars

Becky LOVE this series and her witch series !!

message 113: by Keith (new) - rated it 4 stars

Keith This is the original vampire trilogy. As someone else said, it can drag at times. This is not a teen read, it's more graphic and more detailed. Queen of the Damned was by far my favorite.

message 114: by Hope (new) - rated it 3 stars

Hope I read the first few books years ago, through Queen of the Damned and loved them; but for some reason stopped. I recently read the Mayfair trilogy and was disappointed. I don't know if was the story line or Ann Rice's writing style? I wonder now how I would like this series. Regardless, Lestat will always be my "first"!

message 115: by Pete (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pete Bylone Rice is one of my favorite authors. The series has it's peaks and valleys (like any series), but I would recommend giving them a shot. The ones you like best (which will be unique for you) will make up for the ones you didn't think were great.

Dianne Kurucz Thanks for updating Dolly Ms Rice started my love of paranormal

message 118: by Gemma (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gemma Newey I think some of the series is good and would recommend the first couple of books and the occasional later books, but other than that ... not really. The books can seem a little long winded on occasions - but if you can keep up the read, they are great novels!

message 119: by Vicky (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vicky Artaza Yes it is an amazing book! There are times when the book slows down so you must have patience with it. The sequel (The Vampire Lestat) is even better so I recommend it completely!

Micquleta Yes I would. The Vampire Chronicles introduced me to the vampire genre. It was also the reason that I started to read by choice and not because I had to. I have Anne Rice to thank for that.

message 121: by J (new) - rated it 4 stars

J I read and liked "Interview with a Vampire". "The Vampire Lastat" is one of the very few books I quit in the middle. For some reason the book and I weren't clicking, I wasn't enjoying reading it and shut the book and went on to read something else and never regretted it. I guess I just didn't want to spend that much of my time with Vampires.

message 122: by Ritu (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ritu yesss totally

Tricia Barr If you like the Vampire Chronicles, you will love my new book Amaranthine, you can get it here: http://www.amazon.com/Amaranthine-Tri...

Camille Have to agree, the Mayfair witches series was soon much better. The series with the Witching Hour. I loved the entire series. Can't say that about Lastst. It starts with a modern day witch then tells her family history going back to the witch burnings and drownings in Europe. You really get to know the women. They almost become like friends. This series kind of got lost after Lastat came out. Most people love Tom Cruise. Actually don't think he was the best choice for the role.

Jessaka I read it and thought it was brilliant, but why have a long drawn out diet of vampires.

Caitlin StrÖm wrote: "I wasn't sure if it was worth reading or not. I see alot of mixed reviews on here."

if you have seen the movie and liked it you will enjoy the books. i think worth reading.

there are 10

Nancy Piper Alice wrote: "Back in the day, hell yes! I doubt it has the same impact on readers now. This was the ultimate in the genre..a cult kinda thing as the genre was small."

I have to agree with you! I read it back in the 80's and became a fan, but I certainly have read many more books since then that are better.

Cameron Clark Anne Rice's book series about the "Imortal Blood Drinkers" is by far the best in the Vampire genre.

message 130: by Ibrahim (last edited Apr 18, 2012 08:02PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ibrahim For me I read the first two books quite quickly since somebody recommended it for me... To tell you the truth I was not impressed, It was not that wow factor I thought it would be. So I did not want to give up on Anne Rice and I read her Mayfair book, which I loved! And now I am just finishing the final book in that trilogy,

But on the Vampires, I think that by the time you read the third book ( Queen of the Damned), you will have an appreciation and love for her vampires.

Jtolan1 Absolutely! Anne Rice goes far beyond the traditional vampire genre to create fascinating characters who grapple with deeper issues. How would one be changed by physical invulnerability? By living through so many centuries? How could one avoid despair when the cycles of time become tediously the same? How does one understand meaning, art, religion, love? How would one reconcile the need to feed on humans, from whom one came? What parts of humanity would remain? These questions permeate the beautifully atmospheric setting and unique characters who emerge fully formed and obsessively engaging in this wonderful series.

message 132: by Leslie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Leslie Molloy This series is truly something special. Some are better than others, but as a whole the series is completely entertaining, smart, romantic, a little scary... Love these books.

Although, I would recommend anything by Anne Rice. The series on the Mayfair Witches is really good too... but my favorite books by her are SERVENT OF THE BONES and THE MUMMY. They're both fabulous!!

So agree!

Shannon Pickett I loved this series and the Mayfair series. I have read other books by Rice and have loved them all. I believe she is a good story teller and she does her homework when it comes to history and facts. I loved them mostly because she weaves such a spell with her words that you can get lost in her charters world.

message 135: by Lubna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lubna well , not all of them are worth reading actually think the first three are the best in the series, and then it gets too repetitive and complicated... i would recommend the first three ,

True , i honestly thought Lestat was the most interesting character in the series, he was 3 Dimensional , Rice captured the different sides of his personality ver well ,
i still didn't read Blackwood Farm so i can't judge so far

message 137: by N.L. Dufour (new) - added it

N.L. Dufour i wanted to like this book i really, really did. i didn't even finish it because i was so bored reading it. after they turned the girl i thought it might pick up but i was still forcing myself to read it. it was so slow and boring. i get its an "interview" but it was just him talking and talking and talking. i couldnt get interested in what he was saying. never have i been so bored by a vampire, and i happen to like my traditional. idk... it was dry and drawn out and i hate that i didnt finish it. i wanted to like it, but i never could get into the book so i finally just stopped reading it. with all the positive reviews i feel like i must of been reading a different book. and i am from louisiana and grew up right outside of new orleans. i wanted to feel a connection to the characters, the city, the author but nothing. not a single attachment what so ever.

message 138: by Brett (last edited May 27, 2012 11:20PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brett Yes it's worth reading. I thought the first book was GREAT, second was very good, and it progressively got worse after those... (note: the last I read was Memnoch the Devil)

Interview was the WORSE book in the series. I read it (right after reading Stephen King's "IT") and I did not pick up another Anne Rice book for about 7 years. My husband finally convinced me to read "The Mummy." I loved that one and went back to the Vampire books, read them all in a few days and then went on to the Witch books. Try "The Mummy" and then go back to the Vampire books with "The Vampire Lestat." If you do not like either of those books, then you will probably not like anything else by Rice.

Louis got on my last nerve in "Interview." It was so depressing to read him whine all of the time about how bad his life was and the character of Claudia was just too creepy.

message 142: by Sue (last edited May 29, 2012 08:04PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue I'll be honest, I read the first 6 books and I should have stopped with book 4, up through book 4 the stories were mesmerizing, Lestat makes that series. Forget Louie, okay don't forget Louie, he's hard to forget. But I actually thought the Vampire Lestat was even better than Interview. The very best of the series is definitely the books listed below. I have NEVER been so disappointed as I was with the Movie version of "The Queen of the Damned", that book was OFF the charts good and it was destroyed, couldn't even stomach 5 minutes of it. Especially after Interview was so well done and Brad Pitt (Louie) and Tom Cruise (LeStat) were PERFECT in their respective roles. As for the rest of the series it became rinse and repeat for me, no meat... Lestat is not the focus in alot of the later novels and his unique personality is truly missing from those works. The Vampire Armand (1998) was a decent read... I stopped with Merrick (2000). Listed below are the best of that series. I stopped with Book 8

Interview with the Vampire (1976) - 4.75 stars
The Vampire Lestat (1985) - 5 stars
The Queen of the Damned (1988) -5 stars
The Vampire Armand (1998) - 4 stars

Memnoch the Devil was one of my favorites of the Vampire Chronicles.

message 144: by Stephen (new) - rated it 1 star

Stephen Hayes Lots of people told me to read the series, so I read the first book just to be able to say that I had read one of them, and one was enough. I was bored out of my skull. If you want vampire books, read Dracula or The historian instead.

message 145: by Sue (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sue The Historian I agree was excellent and is written closer to how Dracula was written (Dark and wonderfully suspensful). Rather then the more "highly charged emotionally messy" versions Anne Rice delivers. Both have merit. My take read both(though Interview and Lestat) really should be read sequentially, you have to see Lestat totally crazed/nasty to appreciate Vampire Lestat's insights.

message 146: by [deleted user] (new)

I would recommend them.

Shelley READ them! The best. Anne Rice is a real author and while someone commented that they don't hold your attention.........I would only say that if the reader is used to reading cheesy romance and not real works! For certain, read: Interview, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. You will see where all of the other vampire stories since this time came from! The books after Queen of the Damned are good but almost like "Further adventures of....."

Anne Rice started out writing "cheesy romances" or more aptly - erotica (which is different from romance as a genre). There are actually some very well written romances out there. I loved most of Anne Rice's books. The only one I could not get through was "Feast of all Saints." My husband likes Anne Rice as well, but his biggest complaint is that she jumps around a bit in her writing. He is a fan of linear writing. Different people have different tastes in reading. Some of the books that I absolutely LOVE, others hate and vice versa. Reading is such a personal endeavor that I would never chastise someone because they did not like a book that I did. I am just grateful that there is enough of a diverse selection of books in existence that most of us will be able to find ones we enjoy.

It wasn't meant to "chastise" anyone and I apologize if that is how you took it.

Marlene Slade I would most definitely recommend this series
