Participants: Veronica, Angus, Po, Charles, K.D.
Summary: We are in the opinion that Virlanie is the right foundation for our 1st outreach program. We are impressed with their organization and desire to help street children off the street. Very organized. Staff are sincere and very professional.
Reasons:
(1) They have a home housing teenagers 14-18 years old. Some of these teenagers are readers who've read the whole Harry Potter series and some of the Bob Ong books. They want to read other books but they have no money.
(2) Kirsty Milev, their Fundraising Officer who assisted us during the visit, understood and agreed with our objectives in doing this:
- we can buy books so we are blessed more than most Filipinos in this country. it's time to share our blessings to the less fortunate ones
- we want to influence future generations of Filipinos and make them readers like us.
So there is a match between what we offer and what these teenagers (who used to be street children) need.
We, the participants, discussed our proposed plans along the way and over lunch. Virlanie is just in Makati, very accessible and they are very accommodating.
Specifics:
(1) The visit will be on Saturday, February 18th at 1:00-5:00 p.m.
(2) Participants will have to share for the cost of the food that we will bring with us when we go there. We are thinking of heavy buffet afternoon snacks like pancit, pandesal, tetrapack juice, etc. We will estimate this and will let you know how much will be the individual contributions.
(3) Participants will have to bring at least a book (still presentable) for donation to their bookshelves that was half-empty when we visited this morning. We talked to two teenagers and they loved reading fiction (Harry Potter series, Twilight, Bob Ong are among their favorites) but the books were not there.
Books should be positively-themed (no sex please) and inspiring. Pick ones that can help them improve their outlook in life. The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson series will definitely be hit among them. If you have these available for donation, please let us know. Otherwise, I will buy the whole set of THG and Veronica will buy Percy Jackson's. Other inspiring books could be Alchemist (Coelho) and coming-of-age books like Great Expectations, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bean Trees, etc. If you have books like these, please tell us so we will not have double copies just to give them more titles to choose from.
(4) Tentative program of activities:
1:00-1:30 p.m. Socials
1:30-2:00 p.m. Snack and getting to know you
2:00-3:00 p.m. Introduction. Each of us will introduce ourselves. Name, favorite book (for them and why), favorite book (for us when we were young) and expectations from the event.
3:00 p.m. Program Proper
- 3 games (c/o Po) - must be wholesome and something to do with books and Valentine's Day
- individual pairing (based on the introduction)
3:30 p.m. One-on-one or Two-on-One discussions. What will happen here is that you will discuss your favorite book(s) in detail with your teenager partner. Maybe you will read the book together or you can bring pictures of the author or illustrated edition of the book. Or you can talk about the incident in your life that made the book meaningful to you. This in the hope that the book will likewise be inspiring to your partner.
About cash and other personal tokens, we have to agree amongst ourselves. If you are open for giving cash, we have to pool them together and give as a group. If we have enough cash, a computer would be the best choice since they say that they have to go to an internet cafe just to use a computer (remember that some of the teenagers have sponsors who send them to college).
For personal gifts, we also have to agree on this. If one will give something, I'd rather that we all give one kind or similar kind of item so the teenagers will not compare afterwards.

5:00 p.m. Wrap-Up and Closing
I will send an event invitation shortly. Please answer properly. It is important to know the exact number of attendees from our group because I suggest that the ratio should be 1:1 for more personal talk.
More senior members (Veronica, Tina, Jzhun, Monique, etc) may have two if they choose to.
Remember that as we show them the value of reading books, we also would like to inspire them. We hope that we can start something here: give them more positive outlook, maybe become friends with each other so when they come out from the foundation (we don't call it an orphanage since some of them have parents but they are just there because of some problems at their own homes) they will be better prepared and our role is to help them.
I know that you have questions. I also know that you have suggestions. Veronica, Angus, Po and Charles, please add if I missed anything.
Please answer the event invitation within next week because we also have to give them our final plan and for them to also prepare their teenagers for that day.

Oo nga pala, kung ang books nyo naman eh pang-children (nursery) pede rin kasi may mga homes sila na ganoong edad. Di na nila masyadong nire-recommend na doon tayo pumunta dahil maraming dumadalaw sa mga batang yon. Tsaka mahirap iinfluence pa yong mga ganoong edad. Baka di natin kayanin dahil marami sa atin, bata pa rin. At least dito sa ganitong edad, mas maraming parang magiging friends dahil makaka-edad. Like Kwesi etc.
Sponsors for college education are most welcome too. We can pool money together and send a child to college as TFG Scholar. Why not? This morning we met Angelo at mukhang ang tinu-tino nya. Impressive foundation helping children off the street. Kakahiya na foreigner pa ang tumutulong sa mga kababayan natin. So, let's all be creative. Once in a while get off our chairs and do something to help others.Get our noses off our books and make a difference to other people's lives especially the less fortunate people.
Meron akong Great Expectations, ayun bibigay ko, since wala akong mga YA, may mga classics ako, 2 books mula kay Jack London, White Fang at Into the Wild, Pwede ba yun sa come-of-age? Tas may books din ako ni Mark Twain. haha :)

my thoughts:
1)good choice of age group, there would be more interaction.
2)the time set is ok. We do not need to be there the whole day, it makes it more flexible for other members.
3) 1:1 is ideal for an interaction, but since this is a first outing for our group, it might not be a good idea, I suggest that we do it in small groups,let's say 2-3 TFG members : 4-5 teens. That way, we can have a more senior member teamed-up with a younger one. (i.e. Kwesi as we know is shy during first meetings, it would look awkward for the teenager and kwesi staring at each other for about an hour, so if KD is grouped with him or Ronnie, it balances the group)
4) this is an act of volunteerism, so no pressure. You may want to volunteer your money, your books for donation and of course, your much needed time.
Now for serious matters:
1. We plan to donate a computer and we even plan to send one teen for scholarship
So what do we need?
PERA! we are a nonprofit nonstock organization churva. And we are not rich, in books pa siguro. Well, the one's with more money may donate but of course only to some extent, we need long term financial goals. I'm not good with money matters, so I hope someone from the group may extend some help on this. Fundraising options anyone?
I don't want to demand money from the group nor do I want to feel guilty when I splurge on books thinking that I could have had given something for the teens. It removes the fun in reading.
2. So, we have put up our goal of reaching out. Maybe it is too early to tell, but are we going to stick with this institution as in long term? Or is it a "2012 only" thing, meaning we look for another institution for next year?

Pero kahit comprehensive ang pagtulong nila, maganda ang magiging tulong natin sa kanila. We have a unique chance to be a positive influence on the teenagers, encourage them to read and become book-lovers like ourselves.
The library in the house we visited was in a sorry state. Very few books, tapos mga fairy tales pa na mas appropriate sa mga bata kaysa teenagers. Nung tinanong namin si Angelo kung anong mga nabasa niyang nobela, sabi niya Nancy Drew. This coming from an Accountancy student at TIP. Si Pauline yung nakabasa na ng Harry Potter at Bob Ong. Third-year high school siya at gustong mag Fine Arts pag nag-college na siya.
I suggest the books we bring ay yung simple lang ang writing, para ma-enganyo sila. Kung classics, maganda yung madali silang maka-relate. Kung coming-of-age, yung may positive values. Nung pumunta kami sa National, tiningnan ko yung books pang 9-12. Andoon yung kay Angie Sage, Fablehaven, Rick Riordan. Nakakuha ako ng Narnia pero hindi pa complete. Pagka-suweldo, try ko ma-complete yung Rick Riordan. Mga ganun klase ba. It doesn't have to be new, wala na kasi akong mga books na ganun. Basta stories they can relate to, spur their imagination and be a positive influence on them. Try to remember the books you read when you were younger that made you want to read more. :)
I'm thinking Kwesi, Joyzi, Rollie, Sheryl, Cary and Maria can be of great help in suggesting books for us. And Ayban can help us by suggesting Filipino books we can donate.

Ranee, I think for the serious matters, we can make a more informed decision after the event. By then, we can gauge the members' enthusiasm and take it from there.There are 3 homes that house teenagers totalling 50. We were thinking of spreading the members and the moderators among the 3 houses so we can have a greater coverage.

50 teenagers? So kelangan ng 50 members sa ideal set-up, 100 people. Hala, auditorium kelangan natin nun, meron ba sila? Also, for the serious part it does not hurt to air out this problem. Nakaka-overwhelm ang magcommit ng scholarship grants kasi kelangan may continuity. We don't want to commit and then not deliver, malungkot yun for the teens. But you are right, we'll talk about this after the event.
Wow so many developments! I will look for books na pwede i-donate. Might have to clean up some old stash dito sa bahay -- do you think some of them will appreciate Sweet Valley kahit luma luma na? I'm also willing to help with the financial stuff for the day, like yung sa pagkain and all that. Just let me know. :)

If we need money, I can build relations with target people (to be defined by us) by writing stories about our advocacy that benefits the foundation. But this will take time (the donations will come in maybe in 3-6 months of publicity), but would probably help us in our long-term goal for the foundation. And this would be sustainable as long as I have compelling stories to tell. I will do this because I want to write and I'm in the marketing/PR industry. That's how I can help.

I have some extra copies of Sweet Dreams pocketbooks, YA-romance ito just like Sweet Valley. If they will be able to appreciate Sweet Valley, siguro pwede na yung Sweet Dreams? :) If that's not a good idea, I pledge to donate a complete set of C.S. Lewis' Narnia books. I also have a bunch of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books to give away. Plus, the Gary Paulsen books that I brought last Christmas party (I think they're with Jzhun?).

Ranee: Oh yes, my initial thought was one-on-one when I heard that there were 50 teenagers housed in those 3 homes. So, sabi ko na lang doon sa 'mother' noong home na binisita namin, we will check first kung ilan tayo. Not all the 50 teenagers can be there naman since some of them are members of a choir at Saturday and Sunday ang practice nila. That home is big. Bigger than where I live har har. The sala can accommodate many people. Just wear maong para kung walang upuan, latag na lang kayo ng diyaryo at maupo sa semento. So, we'd like to know kung ilan tayo. Pede ring kasing mag-rent ng chairs o magpa-cater tayo na may kasamang seats and chairs.
Regarding the scholarship, hindi namin nagpagusapan yan. Yong computer lang kasi natanong ko si Angelo dyan. Si Angelo rin ang nabanggit noong founder sa newsletter or pamphlet na binigay sa amin. Example ng teenager na may sponsor. Hindi yan nabanggit ni Kristin (South African Fundraising Officer) pero sa newsletter na yon, sinabi ng founder na yang ang kanilang pinaka-kailangan. Sponsor para sa college education ng mga teenagers.
Sa lahat ng book donations, please bring them on the 28th during the 1st F2F at ilalagay na lang natin either sa car ni Veronica or sa akin. Para wala nang kawala har har. Or bring them with you sa 18th. Naisip ko rin, baka may gustong mag-design ng sticker na pedeng ilagay na front cover ng book something like "Filipinos Book Club: The Readers Who Care" Then a small dedication from the TFG member. Iiwan naman natin sa library nila ang lahat ng books so wala ng name ng "partner" ninyo.
Tsaka kailangan natin ng name tags. With our names and without. And a Pentel Pen para isusulat ang names ng attendees nila during the event.

I am willing to move this by a day. But still my preference is Saturday. My reasons: I want to feel fresh and rested when I start working on Monday. Tsaka us with families, we make sure that we go to church, do some activities together on Sundays. Yon lang naman. Some adjustments can be made pero iba pa rin talaga.
I just want to share this very inspiring blog from someone:"Giving back has always made me feel so whole. I remember not having enough money yet I would consistently spend my days in different non-profit organizations and do volunteer work. I enjoyed being in the frontline. I would probably say this is really one of the best times in my life. I love connecting with people and sharing my ideas, time, and resources.
Sometimes it’s not about the “feel good” emotions that come with it, rather than the person that you become in the process. It helps you understand that Life is BEYOND YOU. It’s not always being in the “grind” rather it’s about true genuine relationships that you develop along the way.

BTW, regarding the scholarship, I think that is jumping far ahead. That is a seriously huge commitment. We need funding for that. Besides, Virlanie already has a lot of sponsors for college funding. I know they need more, but we also have our own financial matters to mind.Baby steps muna. I personally had a chitchat with Miss Milev, and she thinks that what we are planning is already a big help. It may not be financially significant, but it contributes greatly to the development of the teens.
