Eliabeth Hawthorne (eliahawthorne) | 30 comments Start date: Jan 1, 2012 end date: Dec 31, 2012

Requirements: You must have rated enough Goodreads books to get recommendations.

The Challenge: Set the number of books you'd like to read, and get them from your recommendations list. Pick at least one from every suggested genre. The idea is to get you to read new books you may not have heard of otherwise, but not so far out of your comfort zone to scare you back to authors you read on a regular basis.

Because your recommendations are going to change the more you rate, feel free to start with a few and add more throughout the year. Pass over a genre if none of the recommendations look good to you and come back later.

My list:
The Goose Girl - Chick Lit
Crime and Punishment - Classics
Dealing with Dragons - Fantasy
Nightlife - Fiction
A is for Alibi - Mystery
Exiled - Romance

Anyone else in?

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Great idea, Eliabeth! Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to join. My TBR shelves (I have FOUR of them) are already out of control. I'm sure my inner bookworm would bitch me out for reading 6+ books that aren't even on them.

Good luck!

ROFL I don't have that many on my TBR list simply because I have vague "I want to read more by this author..." type reading goals. Most of my reading recently has been fantasy to keep up with what's going on in my genre, so I thought this would be a good way to help me diversify. Good luck getting a little more caught up on some of those shelves.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Very nice challenge idea, Eliabeth. I'm a genre snob, so I shy away from these types of challenges. But, I may jump in later in the year. Good luck with it! and, thanks for creating a challenge in the group that others can join in.

message 6: by Eliabeth (new)

Eliabeth Hawthorne (eliahawthorne) | 30 comments Steph, usually I'm a genre snob too. When I go to the bookstore, unless I'm specifically looking for an author, I never leave the fantasy section. I'm trying very hard to expand my reading pool this year.

message 7: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Good luck with that, Eliabeth!

message 8: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I should do the same and try to read some outside my beloved genre each year. But, I know if I made myself do it I'd be frustrated. Good luck to ya!

:) Well that's one thing I like about the recommendations being based on your ratings. There's no way Horror could pop up as a genre for this challenge (as opposed to genre challenges) nor would anything non-fiction since I've only rated one non-fiction book.

message 10: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments True. I'll have to explore that feature a bit more. Maybe I'll find something to check out.

And it gives you plenty to chose from... I feel like a sales person... :P

message 12: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments LOL! You're good at it (the sales!)...I'm almost tempted to play around with it...hmm....

message 13: by Eliabeth (new)

Eliabeth Hawthorne (eliahawthorne) | 30 comments And if you don't find one you like in a specific genre, just wait for a few months and come back. I made it a full long challenge to give you plenty of time to find recommendations you actually want to read.

message 14: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (k10bentley) | 422 comments I'm in this one, too. It'll give me a reason to look at the recommendations pages.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments I'm still thinking about me list

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I will give it a try. I probably will forget about them though! I am going to list 2 for each and try to read at least one. I hope that is okay.

Young Adult
Raised by Wolves (Raised by Wolves, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes Smack by Melvin Burgess

Supernatural:
Skinned (Cold Awakening, #1) by Robin Wasserman Luminous by Dawn Metcalf

Science Fiction:
Feed by M.T. Anderson The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher

Romance:
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Summer, #1) by Jenny Han The Boyfriend List 15 Guys, 11 Shrink Appointments, 4 Ceramic Frogs and Me, Ruby Oliver (Ruby Oliver, #1) by E. Lockhart

Paranormal:
As You Wish by Jackson Pearce Other (Other, #1) by Karen Kincy

Fantasy:
Wondrous Strange (Wondrous Strange, #1) by Lesley Livingston Evernight (Evernight, #1) by Claudia Gray

Chick Lit:
P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Some of these were listed under more than one category. As you can see I like YA, PNR, light fluffy teen girly books and dystopia. Decent range considering I read almost all YA.

Thank you! If I get around to reading all of these I will try another round. :) I am reading faster than usual for me so far this year. I also do audiobooks so that helps. :)

message 20: by Eliabeth (new)

Eliabeth Hawthorne (eliahawthorne) | 30 comments I've got a six hour drive tomorrow. If I can figure out how to get my Kindle to play audiobooks, I'll be much further along as well lol

I am sure someone in the Kindle group here could help. I have a K1 so I am not sure if they even do audiobooks. I would imagine there is a folder on the Kindle that you could drag and drop into via USB. If you have an Audible account you may be able to send the book to the Kindle through Amazon or Audible. I am just speculating though because I don't know for sure. Enjoy your drive!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 1586 comments I did instructions on some of the “Recommendations” Features for another group. You are welcome to view them without joining. They have print screens of the steps so you can just follow the arrows, if you don't want to read the instructions. The first one shows how to “turn off” a shelf, if you don’t want recs from that one.

“Recommendations” Feature: Request &/or Make Recs from Users

“Recommendations” Feature: For a book already on somone’s TBR shelf.
