Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments ... I've been looking for 2 pieces to Mom's canister set for years without any luck, though. It's really old & fragile. This set is something like it:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HOTTA-YU-SHOT...
The basic pieces are similar, but the painted design is slightly different. Her vinegar might be missing a top & one of the smaller pieces was glued back together, I think."

That's a beautiful set, Jim.

Years ago I tried to sell them a piece to what's left of our Franciscan China (earthenware), but they weren't buying.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks. Hers has a different pattern & colors. I'll have to take pictures of it next time I'm there. That will be April when we go up for the wedding. It's being held there.

Nina | 6069 comments The Matisse owner lady does have a picture of her mother taken around the same time which does look like the one Matisse did. But, I don't think she has written anything about it. She told us Matisse saw her mother and asked if he could do her portrait. She only has one daughter who will inheirit but I will tell her to write something. Of course, the protrait is signed by him.

message 205: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments And Jim, you have a good point. I have inheirted my mother's desk that she once told me belonged to William Henry Harrison's wife. If she had proof I neglected to ask at the time. I only know when I had it appraised it was in the same time frame which of course doesn't verify the ownership.

message 206: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's one of those things they bring up on the Antiques Road Show all the time, Nina. I'm sorry I got so little of our family's history from some of my relatives, too. My grandfather wasn't impressed or interested by his father-in-law's woodworking skill, but it means a LOT to me.

One of my most treasured possessions is a high chair that he made for my grandmother & her older brother. Granny was born in 1898, her brother a couple of years earlier, so even though it is simply a serviceable piece, it's very special to me.

message 207: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim,

I understand your sentimental feeling. I know my mother wouldn't have made up the story of the desk and so I just assume that it truly was Henry Harrison Wife's desk so I think of her when I sit at it. And I read some about them. Interestingly, her father said she couldn't marry Henry as he doubted he'd ever make anything of himself. I guess he relented. I am trying to decide whether to see, "The Iron Lady." I heard it wasn't very good.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Brandon, my youngest boy, is getting married toward the end of April. The wedding is going to be on the farm where Mom works.

Oh, boy. Is this the first wedding for any of your kids?
Has Marg decided what song she will dance to with her son, as "Mother of the Groom"? My son and I danced to "Powder Your Face with Sunshine". Here's a YouTube of the exact recording we used:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bqFON...
It was a great song to dance to... very lively, and our son really hammed it up, especially at the part where they whistle. We have it on video too. I should ask him to put it on You-Tube. What a great memory!

Here's a photo of us dancing at the wedding (but not to that song):

message 212: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Second, Joy. James, the oldest, was married for a few years, but is now divorced. She was a nut job. So is the gal he's living with now, for that matter. Nice enough, but crazy. Oh well, he has to live with her, not me. They're all the way up in RI. Instead of getting married, they bought a house together. Works for me.

I have no idea about the dancing. Don't recall what we did at the last one, either. I was probably still in a zombie-like stupor from the guy that married them. He must have yammered on for 30 minutes. You would have thought it was a Catholic wedding or something from the way he talked. When my cousin got married at St. Pat's in NYC, at least he got a stool to sit on during the spiel. James & Chris had poor Erin as one of the bridesmaids holding their dogs - a pair of Jack Russell's who were also dressed up as bride & groom - who desperately wanted to go to Margaret & me. The preacher was oblivious, even when it was obvious most of us had drifted off. No sense of how to play the crowd.

I really don't like weddings, in case you hadn't guessed. Actually, I avoid all ceremonial occasions as much as possible.
;-)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Come on, Jim! At least have a good time at the reception. I agree that some of the services can be too long.

Do you have a pic of the dogs dressed up as bride and groom? What a riot!

Have you ever heard the story of the practical joke in which someone wrote H-E-L-P! on the bottom of the groom's shoes and when he knelt down in front of the church, everyone could see the soles of his shoes which said "HELP!".

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Never heard of that joke, but it's a good one. I'm not sure about the pictures. A friend of ours took a video of the whole thing. I'll have to see what I have. That was a while back - 7 or 8 years ago.

message 216: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Another funny wedding antic is the bride and groom entering the reception hall, each wearing partial masks made up of a big nose and dark-rimmed eye-glasses, something like this: http://www.maniacool.com/Product_ImgL...
My niece and her new husband did this.

Kids nowadays don't seem to appreciate the formal traditions. We saw one outdoor wedding in which the bride walked barefoot in her fancy white gown.

Nowadays weddings take place in the strangest places. I found an article about that at: http://ryankett.hubpages.com/hub/The-...
"Traditional church weddings have been going out of fashion for years..."
One couple "exchanged their vows at a McDonald's near Dayton, Ohio, the fast food joint was also their place of work and is where they first met..."

message 217: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We used to call those Groucho Marx kits.
;-)

Considering how stupid so many women's shoes are, I don't blame the bride for going barefoot either - if she has pretty feet. James & Christina loved their dogs & didn't want to have kids, so having them in the wedding was just fun.

That's a fun list of weird places to get married. Marg never would have gone for any of the high ones, though.

As far as traditions & weddings go, it's not surprising since everything that formed them has changed. Women burned their bras & much of the basis of the tradition was undercut. The relative ease & lack of social stigma attached to divorce undercut it further. Most couples I know live together before getting married & most seem to do so in a large part just keep the finances, kids, & legalities straight. Oh, a lot still have some feelings for the ceremony, but it's no surprise that it's become more of a celebration or party.

message 218: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Margaret said that Ashley & Brandon's wedding will probably be pretty traditional with the dancing & all, even though it it is being held outside on a farm (in the barn if it rains) rather than in a church. Apparently she's taking this very seriously & she does go to church almost every week. Brandon's been going with her, when work allows. Neither of us know what brand it is, but I think it's either Catholic or Episcopalian.

Brandon & I talk weekly, but we've never discussed the wedding beyond it's going to happen. Marg is always asking him stuff about it, but he tells her to ask Ashley. I never even thought to ask. Brandon & I are well trained guys. We know we have absolutely no say in this at all. We'll just do what we're told when we're told to.
;-)

message 219: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Today is Marg's birthday & we were going to give her all 3 seasons of "The Mentalist". We were especially excited about getting the first season (Marg doesn't know she's getting them, but she's mentioned several times wanting it.) because we didn't start watching the series until the 4th season. We've seen re-runs of most of the 3d season & some of the 2d, but none of the first episodes.

So I was very disappointed when Erin's package arrived last night & Amazon had goofed. She ordered the 1st season - I have a copy of the order - but they sent the 2d season instead. Very aggravating.

message 220: by Werner (new)

Werner Barb and I also had an outdoor wedding on a farm (the one where she worked as a farmhand). I think outdoor weddings are great (there's no man-made physical setting that's as beautiful!), and in this case it made it much easier to accommodate her large extended family and many friends. Otherwise, it was pretty traditional.

Yes, guys had best just do what we're told when it comes to wedding planning. The women are in their element there. :-)

Happy birthday to Marg! Sorry for Amazon's mix-up, but at least you can tell her what she's going to get once they straighten it out.

message 221: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Marg & I got married in an Episcopalian church by Father Hines, the minister her parents suggested. He was a lot of fun. He had big, hairy ears, an earthy sense of humor, & rebuilt vintage Mustangs for a hobby. It was a small ceremony with the reception at her parent's house. Still seemed like too much to me, but she liked it.

About weddings, we had a traditional church wedding and reception. Below is a link to a pic of the wedding party:

It was in February; so we couldn't have it outdoors. But I agree, outdoors can give the prettiest setting.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad you liked the wedding pics.

I watched a Netflix DVD of "Hugo" (2011). It was terrific. It won a lot of awards too. Everything about it was creative and imaginative! Has a lot of atmosphere. Very touching. Highly recommended.
http://movies.netflix.com/Search?v1=H...

"Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton."

I'm also watching (via Netflix streaming) "The Grand" (TV Series 1997–1998)(British). I'm up to the 4th episode and am enjoying it very much. Finally a series which holds my attention and makes me want more. Interesting characters.

"Welcome to The Grand, a four-star, 1920s English hotel where melodrama is served in high style. Love, lust, adultery, greed, prostitution and plenty of juicy gossip come into play as owners John and Sarah Bannerman host a crop of colorful characters."
I recommend this film too.

I am getting Hugo in a couple of days. Can't wait. Does GRAND series have subtitles? With British accents it is difficult with hearing problms to understand the accents. Just watched, Dolphin Tale. Not just for children. It is super good and I am not just saying that because my cousin was the producer. I recommend it. Great acting.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, I had forgotten that the film, "Hugo", was adapted from the book: The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Thanks for reminding me.

Nina, The streamed version of "The Grand" doesn't have subtitles. I know I missed quite a few lines but it all came together in the end. I don't know if the discs have subtitles.

I enjoyed "Dolphin Tale".

Earl, I see that Roger Ebert liked the movie; he gave it 4 stars. I have it in my DVD queue.

Today I watched a Netflix DVD of "Frida" (2002). The movie was excellent. Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina were mesmerizing together, playing artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The beautiful music won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Score, in 2003.
"Frida" (2002)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120679/
http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Frida...
"A biography of artist Frida Kahlo, who channeled the pain of a crippling injury and her tempestuous marriage into her work."
http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Frida...
"Julie Taymor directs this Oscar-winning biopic of painter Frida Kahlo, focusing on her often rocky relationship with husband Diego Rivera and her controversial political and sexual reputation (she was a communist and openly bisexual)."
Cast: Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina, Antonio Banderas, Valeria Golino, Diego Luna, Mía Maestro, Edward Norton, Roger Rees, Ashley Judd, Patricia Reyes Spíndola, Margarita Sanz, Geoffrey Rush, Saffron Burrows, Roberto Medina, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

NOTE: I am currently in the middle of reading The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver. The characters of Frida and Diego appear in the book, as does Trotsky, whose character also appeared in the movie. So it was very interesting to compare notes and learn more about the background of the characters.

Hope you'll feel better, Jackie. Eddie has a bad case of bronchitis. We've rented a nebulizer to help clear things up. It was either that or go to the hospital. Ed has COPD; so we have to be careful. He's on antibiotics. The bronchitis started with a cough which my grandkids brought with them over a week ago. These things take a long time to get better. Take care of yourself.

message 239: by Jackie (last edited Mar 04, 2012 08:56PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I empathize with Eddie, I know exactly how it feels. It's the same for me, a simple cold for anyone else but on me it becomes bronchitis. The nebulizer works very well, I'm not at that stage yet. Hopefully, I won't get there. In years past, my tinctures have helped me get over the bronchitis quickly with less trauma, I'm hoping for the same result this year. Tell Eddie I hope he feels better quickly.

message 240: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks, Jackie. Eddie seems to be slowly improving. At least now I can't here him "gurgle" every time he breathes in-and-out. It's an awful sound! Get better soon.

message 241: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Arrrh, I know that horrible sound! It's scary and stressful. I'm actually feeling a bit better right now. I made a cough syrup and it seems to keep that horrid cough from happening every 5 minutes, now it's every half hour, still annoying though. Sleep-time will tell for sure how I'm doing. I'll sleep with a bunch of pillows propped up so I'm not laying flat, not very comfortable but it seems to help lessen the coughing.

message 242: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck. Sorry for both Eddie & Jackie. Bronchitis really knocks you out, too. I've had it the past 2 Novembers & each time I didn't feel right for 2 weeks. For a solid week, all I could do was lay there & watch TV - couldn't even read. Nothing complicated either. The first year I watched the first season of Buffy. That was just about right.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad you're feeling better, Jackie. Yes, the "gurgling" is stressful for the patient and anyone else listening to it. On top of all the discomfort, there's the loss of sleep. That adds more misery to the illness!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, that's a great summary. You have a terrific memory. Yes, the parts with the cop need editing. Sometimes he slows down the story. I didn't think the beginning was boring but perhaps it needed editing to clarify the reason for the scenes. I hate it when things aren't clear. Maybe they should have clarified the fact that Hugo was an orphan who could be sent to an orphanage if they found him wandering around.

I've been streaming "Kingdom" (TV Series 2007–2008) (British) with Stephen Fry, whom I love. One of the episodes is about a woman who will be deported if her problem isn't solved. It's a good plot device, similar to the one with the orphan. Here are the links:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0841961/
http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Kingd...
"Stephen Fry stars as Peter Kingdom, a Norfolk solicitor whose quirky clientele supplies him with a bounty of unusual cases, which he juggles with tending to his unbalanced half-sister, Beatrice, and searching for their long-lost brother."

The scenery alone in "Kingdom" makes the movie worth watching! The whole movie is so well done! Great photography and cinematograpy. Real quality. You know it when you see it!
