Sometimes I think they are getting too old too fast! :)

Nina | 6069 comments They do that! Grow up almost without you noticing, all eighteen of them. And now a granddaughter who is teaching English LIt in Vietnam wrote to ask for the pie crust recipe that has been handed down from her great grandmother; my mother, that is. I have no doubt she is smiling from heaven..

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I love it when the kids appreciate their ancestors and are interested in knowing about them or in saving artifacts, momentos, memorabilia, and such.

Coincidentally, just today I was thinking of instituting a new custom in our family. At holiday dinners we might ask each of them to share a happy family memory. Some of our kids might think this is a good idea but others would probably roll their eyes. :)

I love it when the kids mention things they remember about growing up and interacting with family members. Just recently my son, who just turned 50, mentioned that he remembered going to my grandmother's funeral. I was glad to hear he remembered it. Grandma was 96 when she died and at her funeral we enjoyed sharing stories about her. The funeral home was probably shocked at all the laughter coming from the room we were in. :) I had a great fun-loving uncles and cousins. So many of them are gone now. It's sad but I'm glad we enjoyed them for so long.

Below is a link to an article I wrote about my Christmases years ago at my grandmother's house in Brooklyn, back in the 1940s. The article was printed in our local newspaper back in 1974:

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We were wrapping presents today, trying to FINALLY get the boxes ready to send out of state to my boys & Mom. Erin was wrapping for her BF's family & requested that we watch a Xmas movie, the Jimmy Stewart one. No, she didn't want to see "It's a Wonderful Life", she wanted to see "Harvey". (No, I have no idea why she thinks it's Christmassy either, but she does.) So we watched it. Fantastic, as always. So many good lines & such great acting, especially by Stewart. Marg said he just looked like he was having a real ball being so nice & clueless at times. He did.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I LOVE the play Harvey by Mary Chase! I'm glad you mentioned it. I just remembered that our Glens Falls Community Theater group is presenting the play in May 2013 at our local Wood Theater. After I read your post, I bought a ticket online! I notice that the first 3 rows are all sold out already!

I had meant to buy tickets but had forgotten all about doing it. Thanks for reminding me!

Imagine, I'm planning for MAY 2013 already and I haven't even got my 2012 Christmas tree up! (lol)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Eric took me to see The Hobbit today, it was magnificent! Everything I hoped for and more. Jackson drew from some of the appendixes in LOTR regarding this period and it fleshed it out nicely. Made sitting in the theater for 3 hours worth it.
Now I can start a new countdown, the next of the trilogy is due to premiere December 13, 2013.
And we saw a lot of good previews too.

Glad to hear it's such a good movie. I'll look forward to it! Wow, 3 hours! That IS a long movie!

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012) (169 min)

It's really funny that for a person who dislikes being in the theater, the ones I always go for are the long ones, lol

Werner Like Jim, I'm going to wait until The Hobbit comes to DVD. But it's definitely on my to-watch list!

message 1023: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It took me a week to re-watch "Grosse Pointe Blank". No one else wanted to see it, so that limited my time with it more, but it's pretty indicative of my TV watching habits. I LOVE that movie. Great sound track & the lines/acting/casting were all perfect. Minnie Driver is so cute, too.

Yep, that's the one. Dan Akroyd was great as a deranged hitman & Alan Arkin was the shrink. I like Joan Cusak, too. She's John's sister & played his secretary. I'm not much of a John Cusak fan, but he was perfect for this role.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1550902/

I remember Dennis Farina as the well-dressed cop on Law&Order and its hard to get my head around him being a low grade grifter, but it works. At least for me, I gave it 4 stars.

Earl, I've got that one on my Instant Queue at Netflix.
The Last Rites of Joe May (2011)
http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/701...
"Low-stakes hustler Joe May returns home from the hospital to find his landlord assumed he'd died, and rented his apartment out to a single mom and her daughter. Joe's life takes surprising turns when he agrees to let the woman and her child stay."

Thanks for reminding me. Looks like it could be a good story.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I watched Takers, mainly because Idris Elba is in it. It was good, for an action movie. The bank heist they do in the first 5 minutes was genius. It kept my interest. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1135084/

Your Sister's Sister, only because Emily Blunt was in it. Rom com, not my thing but not bad. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1742336/

Sinister was excellent for a horror flick. Most of them are awful so it was good to see one that scared me. Not a blood and gore or slasher flick, just damn creepy and scary. If I lived in that house, about 12 minutes into the film I'd be outta there, lol http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1922777/

The Perks of Being A Wallflower http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1659337/
It was good, but far fetched. I had to laugh when I saw reviews saying how the author 'got it right' with the teenagers,... yeah in what universe? Teenagers are not that comfortable in their uniqueness, they do not revel in it, they hide from it. Nor would any senior girl in high school date a freshman, not ever, doesn't matter how much she liked him. Then it gets worse, while she goes to college and is now dating him as a high school sophomore, again, in what universe? It's a good movie as long as you forget their ages.

Alex Cross http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1712170/
I've read all the Alex Cross novels and Tyler Perry does an outstanding job of embodying Alex Cross. So much better than Morgan Freeman ever did. Matthew Fox was terrifying as the villian, he always plays a good guy so it was great to see him in a different kind of role and he did it well.

We Need To Talk About Kevin http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242460/
This was a good movie, if disturbing. It seemed realistic, how the mother sees her child is not right and doesn't know what to do about it. And how she pays the price for his actions.

Hachi: A Dog's Tale was excellent, anyone who has a dog, and knows how loyal they are, this is a film to see. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1028532/
It's based on a real dog in Japan in the 1920s. This is a must see. There's so much I want to say about it but I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

And I started watching The Big Bang Theory from the first season, currently finishing up season two with many more to go. It's still on the air, in it's 6th season. What I like about it is all the scifi/fantasy references and all the science talk. I find it odd that it's so popular and why people who don't get the SF/F references are into it. It's really funny if you know what they're talking about. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898266/

Wow, I have been busy! Happy New Year, everyone!

message 1029: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! Lots of reviews, Jackie. Good ones, too. We love the Big Bang Theory & have been watching it since the beginning. I can't watch more than a show or two at a time, though. My sense of humor trips out.

We watched "Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol" last night. It was very tongue-in-cheek, almost a comedy. Well, we knew what to expect.

We started watching "The Matador" with Pierce Brosnan, but couldn't get into it. We stopped fairly early as Brosnan got drunk & made an ass of himself. Has anyone seen it? Does it get any better?

Earl (read_for_entertainment) | 375 comments Jackie wrote: "And I started watching The Big Bang Theory from the first season, currently finishing up season two with many more to go."

Some years back someone recommended Big Bang Theory to me (we'd both liked Sons of Anarchy) and I tried one, but it left me cold.?? But this month when my TimeWarner cable box started to run dry of my recorded shows I somehow got started watching Big Bang Theory again. I love it! And I had SEASONS to catch up on!

For the same reason, in October I started watching a little Yankee baseball (not that I'm a crazy Yankee fan, but the YES channel does a LOT better job presenting statistics [strikes, balls, outs, pitch speed] than any other). Also they put the blame subtitles WHERE THEY BELONG! I've NEVER been able to watch sports before, it bored the hell out of me, but I got interested in the Yanks and got to know the players names and got hooked! Still can't get interested in football though.

Earl (read_for_entertainment) | 375 comments Wow, I got 2 good Netflix movies in a row. Just watched Prisoner of the Mountains
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116754/

and gave 4 stars. A bit bloody for some probably. And if you don't speak Russian you better like subtitles. I HAVE to use them all the time so I hardly notice the lack of spoken English.

message 1032: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim, The movies are from the past two weeks. I just forgot to post about them. There might even be more that I forgot about, but if I forgot them, then they mustn't be worth telling about, lol

I watched some of The Matador years ago, maybe all of it, but all I remember is Brosnan being a drunk fool. I can't say for sure if it gets better or not. A

I'm gonna pass on Mission Impossible. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, in fact I'm annoyed that he's in the new movie coming out Oblivion (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483013/), I'd rather see anyone in it but him. How the hell did he ever get to be a action hero?

Earl, is the entire Prisoner of the Mountains in Russian? Are you a SF/F fan? I'm trying to figure out why non-SF/F fans like BBT. I'm grasping for any available data.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for all your comments!

Yesterday I watched "For the Boys" (1991) on TCM-TV.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101902/
http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/For-the-...
I love Bette Midler and James Caan too. It's a good story and I loved the music. BTW, George Segal is part of the cast too. He's a favorite of mine as well.

FROM A REVIEW: "For the Boys" is a wonderful nostalgic trip over 50 years and in doing so has cause to be sentimental; it is actually part of the appeal of the movie.
FROM REVIEW AT: http://www.themoviescene.co.uk/review...

One of the songs sung in the movie was: "I Remember You"
(published in 1941, lyrics by Johnny Mercer).
[Lyrics: "I remember you. You're the one who made my dreams come true, a few kisses ago. I remember you. You're the one who said, "I love you, too. I do. Didn't you know? I remember, too, a distant bell, and stars that fell like rain out of the blue. When my life is through and the angels ask me to recall the thrill of them all, then I shall tell them I remember you."]

Hear it on YouTube:
SUNG BY JULES SINGS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSWoto...
PIANO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLCR2f...

Perhaps some of the old-timers would enjoy this movie with all its nostalgia. Be warned that it has some sad scenes about war casualties, including Viet Nam. In the review referenced above, it says: "In the scene where she sings "In My Life" to a bunch of jaded troops in Vietnam it is as if the whole world has stopped to hear her sing, it is a magical performance and a very beautiful scene."

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks Joy, for the recommendation of "For the Big Boys," as I am going to order it. Yesterday we happend upon the old movie, "Camelot" and thoroughly enjoyed watching it again and especially listening to the wonderful score and did it bring back the memory of the last time I had seen it. I was staying with my son and his family in Mexico(not in a resort setting) but in an very old huge hacienda with a tree house and a soccer field and also I was among the other 34 occupants; not hotel guests but all kinds of people living there; some were diplomat's children attending the school my daughter in law was in charge of and they were boarding and some were homeless Mexican's and some were pregnant young Mexicans with no where else to go etc. In the meantime we were all in a large room watching "Camelot" and I sat in between my twin grandsons who were celebrating their sixth birthday. I was also listening to my son trying to interpret the movie in Spanish to one of the Mexican workers who also lived there. However, as my son translated, mauele would laugh and laugh and as you know the movie is not funny. Oh well this went on until we heard a loud pounding at the old door and when opened a man was shouting that there was an earthquake in San Francisco. That somehow ended the movie. It was a night to remember.

Yep, entirely in Russian, I guess, for sure it's not English! I like the Big Bang Theory mostly for the play between the characters, and getting myself hooked on those characters. I am more of a Fantasy fan than real SciFi(Star Trek etc). But I'm very picky about those I like. Big fan of Supernatural, hate Walking Dead (which is supposed to be hugely popular). Kind of like American Horror, but a little too cruel. Like Tanartino's Hostel, which I HATED. Probably you'd have to psychoanalyze me to correctly identify my tastes.

The quake occured just before the beginning of the third game of the world series being played in Oakland.
