Jim (jimmaclachlan) Jackie, check out this blog:

The author does tie things together a bit better. Still, as he concludes, "There are still plot holes you can drive a power loader through..."
;-)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Yes, discs. That's what it says in the online catalogue: 1. Celtic legends collector's set [DVD].

Publisher, Date: West Long Branch, NJ : Kultur ; , p1999.
Description: 3 videodiscs (DVD)(ca. 150 min.) : sd., col. ; 4 3/4 in.

There's only one in the system, so I'd have to go and pick it up.

Thanks Jim, I'll check that out.

This is really a puzzle to me. I can't find the DVD option in the online catalog. Below is all I could find when I enter: "Celtic Legends: Scottish Legends":
http://pac.sals.edu/polaris/search/se...

Are you using the "Mohawk Valley and Southern Adirondack Library Systems" online catalog?

I go to: http://www.crandalllibrary.org/
and then I click on "Search the Catalog" near the top at the left.

Where do you have to go to pick it up? I pick all my stuff up at the Crandall Library.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's not all that remarkable, Joy. Geekiness knows no bounds.

Seriously, you should see the time some people spend on the Star Trek & Star Wars universe stuff. Funnier still, the arguments they have.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Joy, I didn't put Scottish Legends in the search. As I said before, it's a 3 part series so I just put in the main title, Celtic Legends. I use Lake George library and that's where my pickups are.

Jackie, I wrote to the library about this.
I suggested that both versions should come up in the same search.
See my email to the library in your regular mailbox. I bcc'd you.

Glad you can pick it up nearby. What great service!

The Big Bang Theory is one of our favorite shows because they indulge in that sort of behavior. I had a neighbor who turned a room in his basement into a collectible show room for Star Wars stuff. Then he had twin boys. We moved, but I often wonder how his stuff fared.

But usually there's no one talk with about them.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Have any of you watched The Good Witch (2008) with Catherine Bell? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1105729/

I just found out that there's a new one every year. I saw the first three so far, The Good Witch's Garden (2009) and The Good Witch's Gift (2010). I didn't see The Good Witch's Family (2011) but this Saturday they're all airing on the Hallmark channel starting in the morning, which is when I plan on watching this one. Then later, at 9pm Eastern, the newest one will air, The Good Witch's Charm.

These are wholesome family oriented TV movies and are great for all ages. Not to be missed.

message 815: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, I can stream "The Good Witch" from Netflix. I plan to do that. Thanks!

They show "The Good Witches Garden" but it's not available at Netflix yet. It gets put on the member's SAVED list if they want.

Netflix doesn't show any of the others.

message 817: by Werner (new)

Werner Yes, Jackie, Barb and I both have seen (and really liked!) the first three movies in the series. (Back on Nov. 20, 2010, I posted about the series, on the movies thread for our group that was being used at that time.) But I didn't know about the fourth one, nor about the upcoming new one! I'll tell Barb about this, and try to watch at least the ones I haven't seen. They'll probably rerun them a few times over the next week or so (though with my schedule, that won't help me much).

message 818: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I think tonight "Mockingbird Lane" premiers. Looks like a new "The Munsters" is a series. I set the DVR to record it. I'm not holding out much hope, although I did like the original Munsters.

message 819: by Jackie (last edited Oct 26, 2012 01:30PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Werner, I definitely thought of you when I saw it. You and I have seen the same ones. The schedule for the 4th one, Family, is at 11am and 7pm, followed by the brand new one at 9pm. I hope you and Barb get to see it.

Jim, Mockingbird Lane is a proposed drama about The Munsters. NBC decided not to go ahead with the show but will give us the pilot episode. When people said "Why bothering watching it at all then?", they responded by saying if it does well in this one single airing, they will make the series. And they wonder why people are fed up with network TV? I don't hold out any hope that it will become a regular series. The only reason I was interested in it was because of Eddie Izzard's involvement. I'll watch him in anything. Has anyone seen the new Treasure Island mini-series that aired in May? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1820723/ He was fabulous as Long John Silver.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I love Eddie Izzard's comedy. This Treasure Island role is a different one for him. Netflix has it. http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/Treasure...

message 822: by Jackie (last edited Oct 26, 2012 04:18PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Izzard is so funny; I get such a kick out of him. In acting, I love him as a villain, he has the perfect villain voice. He should be in video games, lol
Did you know last year he ran 43 marathons in 51 days? It was for some charity, I saw him on Graham Norton talking it about it. It was impressive for a 50 year old.

Treasure Island stayed mostly true to Stevenson's story, which was slow...but good. I prefer an adaptation to be true to the source material than to change it.

message 823: by Werner (last edited Oct 26, 2012 04:32PM) (new)

Werner I missed that Treasure Island miniseries (actually, I hadn't even heard of it!), but I'd love to see it sometime. The only cinematic adaptation I've seen was the 1950 Disney version (www.imdb.com/title/tt0043067 ). That one is pretty faithful to the book, and I liked it. (It's been over 30 years since I watched it, though.) Jackie, I'm with you in wanting to see faithful adaptations rather than the sort that introduce all sorts of unnecessary changes (which would usually greatly mislead viewers as to what the original author really wrote!).

message 824: by Jackie (last edited Oct 26, 2012 05:28PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I think the changes are insulting to the author. Like, "hey, your book is great, but I can do it better". Or worse is when the finished product doesn't even resemble the original work and they're just trading in on the well known title.

message 825: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Netflix has numerous versions of Treasure Island but none of them are streamable.

Today I finished watching the movie adaptation of We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates via a Netflix DVD.

"We Were the Mulvaneys" (2002)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313769/
http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/We-Were-...
"In 1976, in the small town of St. Ephraim, N.Y., the Mulvaney clan lived what most people would consider the American Dream. But mum's the word when one year, a tragic incident occurs that the family -- and townspeople -- vow never to mention again. Beau Bridges and Blythe Danner star in this sensitive drama based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates."

Once I got into it, I was riveted. Tammy Blanchard played the young girl, Marianne Mulvaney. She gave a sterling performance. Brought tears to my eyes which doesn't happen often during a movie.

Not all the member reviews at IMDb or Netflix were favorable but the story was engrossing and I was glued to the screen. Dark stories aren't my usual fare but I was curious about this one because the book was by Oates and I probably will never read it. Now at least I have an idea of what it was about.

One of the IMDb member reviews says: "The story is about a family that functions at a high level - as long as there are no bumps in the road. When the family is tested, not every family member has the inner strength or character to keep the family together." I thought the rest of review was good too. It's at: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur1840086/co...

message 826: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I saw that one some years ago, and I have to agree, I was engrossed. I can't say I liked the story, I was upset at how the girl was treated when she was the victim but it was still a very good story because I've never forgotten it. Excellent casting and performances.

PPS-Jackie, my review (linked above) addresses your feelings about the story. See the end where I quote an IMDb review. Among other things, the reviewer wrote: "I suspect that women from past eras will find this film provoking, and the younger ones will do well to see how much progress has been achieved since. We still have a long way to go, of course."

message 829: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Good review.
It's coincidental that this subject comes up, last night I was talking to Eric and his friends about not leaving their drinks unattended in a bar, and it gravitated to date rape and how it was when I was a teenager-young adult. They were astounded and horrified when I told them that women generally didn't report rape because they were made be at fault.

message 830: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, about leaving drinks unattended, I once left the bank teller's counter for a minute while waiting for her to give me cash. (Stupid, I know.) When I went back to the counter, she told me she had already given me the cash! They finally gave me my money but I never found out if the teller had handed the money to someone else who happened to go to her counter while I was away from it.

message 831: by Jackie (last edited Oct 26, 2012 09:06PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I could see that happening. But she must have been unobservant to not notice it was a different person.

Speaking of unobservant...over the summer Science Channel had a night of programs about the brain and perception. One of them had a segment about how our brains filter out many things it considers unimportant. They had a man make many changes to his appearance while pretending to be a salesman in a store. It was crazy! He had neck brace, then he didn't, he had an eye patch, then he moved it to the other side, he changed hats, shirts and his jacket. Then afterwards he asks the person he was waiting on if he noticed anything out of the ordinary, every one of them said no! When the people thought something must be wrong with them, he told them it was actually quite common. I can't remember the names of the three programs Science Channel aired but they were amazing and informative. I learned a lot that night.

message 832: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Oct 26, 2012 09:09PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I remember seeing a similar program. The point was that our minds can't focus on several things at once. So that we may not see what's going on right in front of us because we're focused elsewhere.

PS-That's why magicians can pull the tricks they do.

message 833: by Jackie (last edited Oct 26, 2012 09:15PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Maybe you saw the same programs, because in one of them, they had a man dressed as a clown on a unicycle at a college campus. He was instantly noticed by all the people who were not on cellphones, and completely missed by the cellphone users, even to the degree that he wizzed right in front of them across their field of vision as close as a two feet in front of them and not one of them noticed him. It's called the Cone of Perception, proving that talking on the cellphone distracts us in a big way because we're so involved with that phone and it limits our awareness to around the physical location of the phone. Eric would argue with me saying that talking on the cellphone while driving was just like listening to the radio, I said it's not at all the same. I was so glad when I saw this segment and I made him watch it and it really changed his mind about cell usage and driving. He was surprised at what he saw but there was no denying it.

Jackie, I don't remember the clown but I think I do remember something about a college campus.

Anyway, I'm glad you've pointed out that talking on the cellphone while driving is NOT like listening to the radio. That's an important point to tell our kids and everyone as well!!!

They should put up public service ads stressing this point!

message 835: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Oct 27, 2012 08:29AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS - Jackie, another interesting phenomenon is the fact that we can pay attention to the following two things at the same time:

1. What someone is saying to us
2. What someone is writing to us

That's because the brain pathways are different for each action.

As an example, if I'm on the phone listening to what someone says and someone in the room says something to me, I can only focus one of those statements. However, if the person in the room WRITES his message down and puts it in front of my while I'm listening on the phone, I can process the written words as well as the spoken words at the same time!

I'm sure you've noticed this. I learned it while working in an office. I told my office mates: if they want to say something to me while I'm on the phone, they should write what they have to say on a piece of paper and put it in front of me.

message 836: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I find it true to a degree. The idea of multitasking is misleading because we can only give 100% attention to one thing at a time. We can do what you said above but not to the degree that we would if we did each thing separately.

message 837: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, I feel the same about multitasking. It can lead to errors because our mind isn't fully on what we're doing.

I watched one of them and enjoyed it, so I kept my eye out, also searched on TimeWarner box and found a few. However the 2nd one was just too much, too bland, too something. I gave up on them

message 839: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments They're light, not high drama or anything. Family films with morals. I find it refreshing after all the violence and immortality in movies, however, I don't think I could watch a bunch of them back to back either.

message 840: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jackie, we have so little alternative; a bit boring if seen in bunches and immoral to the point of boredom also. I so look forward to the third series of Downton Abby.

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments I can hardly wait for Downton Abbey! January 6th!

message 842: by Werner (last edited Oct 28, 2012 03:25PM) (new)

Werner Earl, that series isn't everybody's cup of tea. I'm a sucker for things supernatural (as you'd suspect, given that I'm the founder of the Supernatural Fiction Readers group here on Goodreads), so for me that tends to be the hook (and family-friendly content and positive messages don't hurt). But I'll agree that the second film, The Good Witch's Garden, suffers some from what I call "sequelitis," and isn't as fresh and appealing as the first. It also has a big logical problem, though nobody appeared to notice it. (view spoiler)

I'd never have the opportunity to watch all five movies back-to-back! But I did get to see --and even hear!-- a sizeable portion of the new one last night, and liked what I did experience. (I wouldn't claim that I actually "watched" it as a whole, though.)

Some time ago, I saw part of an episode of Downton Abbey, and regretted that I don't get to see it more often. It impressed me as very much the kind of quality production the BBC is noted for in its dramas!

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Today I streamed the following from Netflix:
"Agatha Christie's Poirot" (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094525/
http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Aga...
"David Suchet stars in this mystery series as Agatha Christie's master sleuth Hercule Poirot, who investigates murders and other confounding crimes with the help of the affable Capt. Hastings."

5 stars! Don't know why it took me so long to discover the charming Hercule Poirot as played by David Suchet. I LOVED the mystery and I'm not a fan of mysteries. Will be watching more episodes for sure!

Hope the coming storm doesn't cut me off from Netflix streaming! LOL

At least I'll still have my book, The Titans, by Jakes, to keep me company. ('m still at it!) I'm afraid that my reading time has decreased greatly since I joined FunTrivia. :)

It shows years from 2000 on up and there's a link for before that.
It skips from 2010 to 2013.

Not sure if they've been on PBS.
