My reviews are brief and there are no spoilers. The author is Italian writing about a Frenchman in the 1800's who travels to Japan repeatedly to buy silkworms as part of the silk trade of that era. There are terrific romances involved and a stunning moment of revelation. This is a brief 93 page work that was terrific, powerful, and concise in its use of language. Ultimately, it is a love story. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this from my local library and, as I usually do, read few pages right away. But then I kept reading and reading...some point I had to sit down so I could read it all the way. I just simply LOVED it. That book is pure poetry. It just sweeps you away and keeps you mesmerized rest of the day. And all this in rest than 100 pages. That is something! When I had read the book I had to go and rent the movie also, and it was as good as the book. So I would recomment them both!
Just discovered the book as well and managed to read it in less than 2 hours after dinner. Beautiful book.I tried to look up the movie trailer, and unfortunately got turned off by the casts. Too bad.

I just ordered this book because your post reminded me of it. The film was lovely too. I rented it from Netflix some time ago. Hope you are able to see it and tell us what you think.
I'm afraid I'm going to pass on the movie. Keira Knightley and Michael Pitt just look wrong for the parts. But I might order the print copy of it, though (I read the Kindle edition).

Anyway, that aside, the story was beautifully written, but so sad and bittersweet. I couldn't feel sorry for our protagonist and his love affair of the mind. I just can never excuse that. But the wife and her wishing so much that she had his heart like that...oh! So tragic!
