G. Walker | 165 comments I've just revamped my website. I got fed up with my current host, so I'm trying out a new place, but I don't want to upgrade before getting some feedback and/or suggestions for the site.
If you have some time, I'd appreciate it if you could take a look and let me know what works and what doesn't.
It's at:

I really like the background image. Also very happy to see a mention of book II as well as the Eiledrian Swords getting some love. I'm not sure how I feel about the wipe to change pages though.

Will the site be visible to mobile devices? I know the iphone has some pretty limited access to certain places due to flash player restrictions.

Eric Quinn (eqknowles) I agree with Scott; the background image is fantastic, however, since you use the image for each page it creates some awkward transitions that the wipe is not hiding. Overall, it looks great and you can keep what you have and be happy with it, but if you're looking for some tweaks, I suggest creating different looks for each page; you can use blown-up parts of your main image, for example. That would be an inexpensive way to create a more varied look without extra cost.

G. Walker | 165 comments Thanks for taking a look. I appreciate your time.

Eric, could you be a little more specific as to the awkward transitions? And that's a good idea about the varied images. I just wanted to make sure I could make a workable site before getting too far into it.

Scott, I couldn't see it on my iPhone 4, but I just got it (upgraded from a Razr, lol), and I'm afraid to mess with too many settings. I've heard Flash is available for iPhones now, but not sure how to make it work.

I went through Wix, which uses Flash by default. If I had the skills, I'd try to build it on a regular server with PHP and CSS, but alas....

Eric Quinn (eqknowles) Sure. On closer inspection, I think what I'm seeing is created by the wipe effect. For example, from the Home page, click The Books and watch the "Welcome to the" font and you'll see what I mean. The font get's smaller, then, after the wipe, it bounces back to normal size. It's only slightly jarring.

G. Walker | 165 comments Ah, okay. I'll experiment a little bit with the transitions. I just didn't want one of those where the next page comes flying in from stage left, lol.
Thanks!

message 7: by Eric (new)

Eric Quinn (eqknowles) Indeed. And it's a minor detail, really.
Did you do your own artwork?

message 8: by G. (new)

G. Walker | 165 comments I wish I had half as much talent as the artist. That's another reason I'm holding off on going live and upgrading the site to use my own URL. I'm waiting to hear back from him on the artwork. His page seems to imply that it's free to use, but I want to make sure.

G. Walker | 165 comments He's got another piece that's almost perfect for From a Far Land. If there was a forest outside the door instead of a beach, I'd be asking him about that one.

Looks great, Dave! I realize I'm a little late to this party, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in there. The background graphic is amazing!

I like that alternative graphic as well. The door in the worn down house is a pretty fitting image for From a Far Land.

Have you been able to get back into writing a little bit more regularly since getting settled into the new place?

I got some work done on both Altered Intentions and Redemption's Edge last night. One of my resolutions is to get them both out this year, get the third Jaben's Rift solidly started, get a start on the new series, lose thirty pounds, win the Canadian lottery, see From a Far Land made into a movie, take...... wait, getting carried away there.

So, short answer....yes.

Hey, just thought of this. Your concept art is along the same theme as mine!

I reworked the cover to book 1, using the same artist who did book 2.

G. Walker | 165 comments Paul and Ken, thanks for checking it out. Glad you like it.

Jeffrey, the new covers look great! I'm not really surprised at the similarity, since both of our stories involve portals to other worlds.
I may revise my covers once the second book is almost ready. I'll have to see what I can come up with.
