Have you watched the film version?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thank you for this list, to which I will refer. It surprises (and pleases) me to see A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on the list, a book I read nearly 50 years ago. I remember it fondly, and agree it belongs on a Best list. Of course there are others on the list I have read, but Tree may just be the one book that made a reader of me.

Mosca | 828 comments Jeane, To Say Nothing of the Dog is a time travel book by Connie Willis. It is a sequel to Doomsday Book. In the next year a third book "All Clear" will be published. Whether this is a trilogy or a series, I do not know.

"To Say Nothing of the Dog" involves time travel from Oxford University in the mid-21st Century to Victorian England in the later ninteenth century. It also involves travel to the bombing of Coventry Cathredral during World War 2.

The Victorian era portion is very humorous and partly occurs on a boat trip down the Thames with many allusions to Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome.

Connie Willis loves the comedic aspects of Chaos Theory; and skillfully writes a comedy of errors involving the physics of time travel, the manners of the Victorians, the tragedy of Coventry Cathedral, and the pleasures of boating.

This book is worth the time.

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Thanks Mosca, this part sounds very interesting especially the World War two part:"To Say Nothing of the Dog" involves time travel from Oxford University in the mid-21st Century to Victorian England in the later ninteenth century. It also involves travel to the bombing of Coventry Cathredral during World War 2.

I jsut had a flas thought....it doesn't feel like it but 35 years after the end of WW II I was born. 35 years isn't that much! In seven years time that is how long i have lived. It seems a lot but actually it isn't.
