The most annoying thing is there are no answers to what actually caused the whole thing in the first place - obviously meant to be a ploy to get you to buy more books. I actually have the next two in the series, but just can't get myself interested enough to start reading them. How the author is going to stretch it out over 6 books I really don't know!
It all depends on what kind of books float your boat. I recommend give it a try, but don't have too high expectations.

At first when I started reading this, I was kinda like you. I would pick it up and almost instantly put it back down.
The first book didn't really do much for me, and I kinda underestimated the plot at first.
The first book is, in a way, like an introduction to the series.
Its a formality to the characters, environment, animals, and the basic situation of the book and that's it. Not much plot advancement.
And after I finished it, I wasn't very motivated to read the 2nd.
But I am so glad that I did eventualy.
It's in the 2nd book that the story really gets interesting!
You'd already have an understanding of the series from the first book, so now that that's done with, the author can move on to actually telling the story. And in my opinion it got really really good.
I couldn't stop reading it! It was such a page turner for me...
The thing that I like most about this series is that it has alot of perspectives.
There are alot of characters, and the author switchs between perspectives every chapter and sometimes in one chapter, there will be like 3 different people. And the perspectives come from not just good characters, but mean characters, evil characters...etc. And it all works, it doesn't give you a headache, it isn't too much to proccess either.
So I definatly recommend this book to you if you like books that are suspencefull, thriller-like, with BIG questions that don't get answered straight-away.
It's actually become my second fav' series!

The first book didn..."
eventually. it starts slow.
If your in to dystopia and horror fiction novels this book is a pretty good choice. I wasn't to excited about finishing the first book but I had to read it for my English class (either this or some dead guys book) and I did NOT regret it! Lots of action and gore (kind of horrifying) and mystery so it always kept me on edge. I eventually got the rest of the series for christmas and finished it in like a week. Gone is now my 3rd favorite series (after the hunger games and Percy Jackson) please give it a try!

User Based Casting picked it up, and I'm sure we'll see some interesting actors and actresses vying for roles soon.

You'll eventually fall in love with the characters. I couldn't help myself ;P

im only on book number 4, Plague but im in love with this series! as far as the gore scenes go there is some deaths and battles that take place but altogether it isnt that bad it hasnt been like horrifying! Also, so far they have only made some vague references about sex and what not but havent explained in lots of detail! i'd say keep reading them and make the decision based on how the books go for you but i can definitely say the first 4 books will be fine for him to read :) hope this helps!

Okay, he's 15, and the gore shouldn't bother him too much :p thanks very much for answering my question. I think I will read the rest of this series just because I desperately need to see everything that happens and the how and they why! :)
