Sarah, Lavinia doesn't fit the theme I've specified. You can nominate a different book if you like. Please remember to link to title and author rather than using the cover view. This makes it easier for when I set up the poll. Thanks!

Blood on the Forge by William Attaway or Sally Hemings by Barbara Chase-Riboud but Someone Knows My Name is also on my 2012 list as well as A Million Nightingales.
This is a time travel novel, but it deals with African-American slavery. It's Kindredby Octavia Butler.
Someone Knows My Name looks so good, I've had in on my TBR list for ages, thats what i'll be voting. (Now that I know what the topic is lol)
how aboutThe Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
The Long Song It is about slavery but takes place in Jamaica - might fit if you stretch the category a little.

Kristine, I didn't realize the Meridien was a sequel to The Color Purple. I've removed it from the poll, as we haven't read the first book yet.
