Blood on the Forge by William Attaway or Sally Hemings by Barbara Chase-Riboud but Someone Knows My Name is also on my 2012 list as well as A Million Nightingales.

This is a time travel novel, but it deals with African-American slavery. It's Kindredby Octavia Butler.

The Long Song It is about slavery but takes place in Jamaica - might fit if you stretch the category a little.

Kristine, I didn't realize the Meridien was a sequel to The Color Purple. I've removed it from the poll, as we haven't read the first book yet.
