The Book Thief

message 2: by Janet (new)

Janet Jones | 20 comments Coincidentally I had just started this book anyway and am currently about 30% through. It took me a couple of pages to 'get' the writing style, but once I did I've started to enjoy it. I think due to being so busy over Christmas my reading has been in shorter bursts than normal and I think I needed a longer lead-in time!

Kelly Rouane Janet - me too - a friend had recommended the book a couple of weeks ago, I am now 75% of the way through the book. I am really enjoying the book so far.

Kay (Golden Girl) | 2193 comments I started reading this book last year but gave up as really could not get into it ,think I will try again as so many people seem to like it .

Steve Robinson (steverobinson) | 2926 comments This is on my bookshelf of all-time favourite reads. Unusual, yes, but so richly drawn and powerful. Great imagination. I'm looking forward to the discussion.

message 6: by Ruth (new)

Ruth (readerruth) | 1 comments I read this last year, finding it different from all other books I've read, which is great!

message 7: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Like you Steve, this is one of my all-time favourites now. I absolutely loved it. May have a skim to remind myself of the finer points before discussion though.

message 8: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I read it last year for our book group in the village. I really loved it but I don't feel I have time to re-read it. I shall follow (and almost inevitably chip in with) the discussions though.

message 9: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I'm reading this right after I finish my current read!! Excited!

message 10: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I read this last year too (recently enough that I don't think I'll read it again just yet though). It was amazing, had me really moved.

message 11: by Melody (new)

Melody (melody44) I'm just starting it today.... Behind already, I know! But I can read a lot tomorrow, so I'm hoping to catch up. Been on my TBR pile a long time, so I'm anxious to begin!

Kay (Golden Girl) | 2193 comments I gave up on this book last year but glad to say I read it all now ,and once I got into it I absolutely loved it ,thanks for making this one of this months read or I would really have missed out on a great book .

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yay!

message 14: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Started it this week. Slowly getting into the story. Writing style is indeed different... is it that way all through the book?

message 15: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments It is. You'll get used to it (hopefully)

message 16: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Yea it's not bad, just different... I'm such a routine freak, shame on me really !

message 17: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Yeah, it takes some getting used to but you do get used to it, well I did anyway! Hope you enjoy Lorraine, I loved this book

message 18: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I thought it was quite refreshing having it written in an unusual style.

message 19: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie | 99 comments I finished this earlier in the month but didn't enjoy it.

ReadAlongWithSue recovering from a stroke★⋆. ࿐࿔ I too read this book last year I found it quite heavy going and didn't enjoy it

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments Read this a few months ago absolutely loved it

message 22: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I love how different everyone's opinions are. :o) I think that is my second favourite thing about this book club. First is all the wonderful people, of course.

message 23: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments This one in particular seems like a Marmite read though doesn't it. Either Love it or hate it!

message 24: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments It's quite good for those attempting to read the book, can't start with any preconception :)

message 25: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yea it seems to be. Personally I loved it and was really moved by the style of writing. But then I love anything that has a "Death" character in it, don't really know how to explain why... Death just fascinates me and imagine that was your job.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We certainly have a few morbid people in our group and I'm chuffed to count myself as one of them, Jud!

message 27: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Count me in too!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yep, you too, Lorraine.

Wanna amputate something with me? Girls night out!

message 29: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I'm in!!

message 30: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Pffft. Amateurs, been there, done that.

message 31: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Can someone tell me (use spoilers if needed) if I'm going to end up crying over this book?

message 32: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I'm about to start it :D

message 33: by Keith (new)

Keith | 24 comments Lorraine - totally wanting to kiss everyone ♥ wrote: "Can someone tell me (use spoilers if needed) if I'm going to end up crying over this book?"

i think you might shed a little tear think thats why i loved the book i think i went thru all the emotions the start is heavy going but stick with it i had to badger my daughter to stick with it now she,s glad she did

message 34: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I officially love it already and I've barely even started. Although why did I choose a ridiculously long book so soon after another ridiculously long book?!

message 35: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Thanks Keith. It's just that I find myself feeling so much for little Liesel. I don't know if it's because I can relate to her life somehow, but I feel emotional just thinking about the book so I guess it won't be hard for me to turn on the tap if the time does come :)

message 36: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I cried Lorraine, properly cried.

message 37: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Awwwwwwwww.... I'll make sure I have a supply of tissues then !

message 38: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments A book is an excellent excuse to have a good cry. Sometimes it's just what I need.

message 39: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Will have to try and time it so it doesn't clash with my PMT time... because usually there are tears galore without even there being a reason !

message 40: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Well at least you would have an excuse other than PMT if it did coincide.

message 41: by E A M Harris (last edited Jan 21, 2012 08:45AM) (new)

E A M Harris | 42 comments I read it some time ago and loved it. Now re-reading and finding so much more.

message 42: by Nicola Bell (new)

Nicola Bell | 2 comments Definitely need tissues, as Jud has said, it makes you properly cry, tears and everything, but a great read!!

message 43: by Paul (new)

Paul (latepaul) I'm 62 pages in. If I'm going to finish it this week I need to get a bit more of it under my belt today but I can't say I'm overwhelmed with enthusiasm. The writing style and all the little twiddly bits of text get in the way.

Still, I do want to finish it, having started so...

message 44: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Jasper (elizabethjasper) | 38 comments I re-read this as it was a January pick and I'm just as impressed with it second time around. The word 'poignant' came to mind several times as I read. Wonderful, imaginative story, carefully crafted, believable characters that will linger in the mind. Stunning writing and well worth the second visit.
