I just read -- and happy wept through -- The Bungalow by Sarah Jio. It had a minor adoption theme in it, which was a surprise as it's not mentioned in anything I've read about the book. But I'm counting this one as, man, the book was really just lovely. The ending of the adoption storyline is quite laughable, but it brings the story together. Great novel.

Racilous | 1 comments Just picked up No Biking in the House without a Helmet and started reading it today so thanks for the recommendation.

I really enjoyed Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. The adoption portion is a secondary theme, but was interesting and still important to the book. Overall I thought it was a great book and one of the better historical fiction books I've read recently.

I just finished Chasing China, a novel about an adult adoptee who returns to China to find her first family. It was rather cheesy but had some interesting plot twists.

A great book I read a few months ago is Finding Fernanda. It goes into great detail about one specific case in Guatemala but also talks a lot about the corruption in the program overall.

Hey, do you know the background of the author? Is it an adult adoptee from China? I'd be very interested in reading it if so.

Andrea -
I don't know the background for sure but based on some of the very p.c. adoption language from the main character, I'm assuming she is an adoptive parent. I'd be surprised if she is an adoptee..

Caryn | 2 comments Iredsd don't bicycle in the house without a helmet last year and loved it to. Just finished Kisses for Katie by Katie Davis and enjoyed it. It caused me to examine myself and my own life pretty thoroughly and gave me a new perspective on approaching the orphans crisis In countries like Uganda. I found it to be repetitive and preachy at times, but understand that is a core characteristics that moves her through her day and guides her actions, so it didn't necessarily bother me. Clearly it works for her. If Christian based books aren't your thing this one might frustrate you.

Caryn | 2 comments I also read Another Seat at the Table last year, a memoir about a family's experience as foster and adoptive parents, that I enjoyed. I need to update my 2011 list and go through and see what other adoption themed books I've read.

Here is a customer review (from a stranger):

"Imagine awakening one day to discover absolutely everything you know about your life, your family history, your very identity is wrong. Now...get on with it!"

"In his fascinating, funny and frequently chilling true story of discovery, at age 50, that he was accidentally switched with another baby at birth, Al Mascareñas takes his readers on a headlong trip through growing up and growing older as he seeks to make sense of it all from a disturbingly different--and unasked for--new perspective."

"Against the backdrop of mid-century cultural, political (and chemical) upheaval, Mascareñas tells his tale with a unique voice graced by humor and intelligence. He manages to skillfully deliver deep emotional truths unburdened by emotionalism or melodrama."

"A compelling story and an enjoyable read that left this reader with a fresh, hopeful sense that the author's larger narrative is far from finished--that the authentic story of who and what we are is ultimately crafted by our own hands in our own time."
