He finally decided to stop beating around the bush and cut to the chase. "She was just scouting pack borders, though I don't understand why she was doing it alone, considering -- one -- that's just asking for trouble, and -- two -- she's one of the smaller wolves in the pack. I don't know what he was up to, though; just being troublesome and malicious, like all the teenage boys want to be, I suppose, but he was taking it to a degree that can't be within pack regulations. At least, I hope it isn't." Just frowned, then he brushed Shae's tail with his own. "Sorry for snapping at you earlier, by the way -- about the sidekick thing. I was just anxious, focused."
He rumbled a gentle, relaxed sigh, sliding down to his stomach. "I'm envious," Just replied with an almost nervous chuckle.
He automatically turned his gaze towards the sky in reaction, then shrugged. "If needs be, then feel free to get some shut-eye." He made it sound as if he wasn't planning on going to sleep anytime soon.
"A ninja," he scoffed, but in a playful, teasing manner. "Right." Just rolled his eyes towards Shae, then his gaze flicked between she and Whisper. "Fine; sleep when you will. But it could be a long night if you stay up as long as I."
Whisper backed away. "If you wish, then I'll sleep." She chose a small spot near a rock but still close to the other two wolves.
He rumbled a grunt as Shae jumped on him, heaving himself to his paws automatically in attempt to make her fall one way or the other with a small smirk. He then glanced in Whisper's direction and replied, "I do not wish one way or the other. It is your choice."
"You wouldn't," he sneered with a small twitch of a grin. "I know you." His gaze was menacingly challenging, practically dangerous as he turned to face her and peered into hers.
Just cocked his eyebrow, watching Shae and Shae only from where he stood, even when Whisper nudged him; in a way, he was challenging Shae, but in another way, he was warning her.
His ears twitched towards the noise, and, sensing Shae's distraction, he peered towards the sound, a low rumble in his throat.
His hackles rose, and he took a defensive step towards the stranger. "Excuse me," he snapped, "who exactly are you?"
He glared at the stranger, staring at him until he disappeared in the distance, then he sighed softly and turned towards Shae, dropping to his stomach. "Who was that?" Just eyed the female.
"Your brother?" He raised his eyebrow, his voice raising slightly. When he continued, he had calmed and recomposed himself. "I didn't know you had a brother."
"I could tell." He glanced back in the direction the stranger had come as if he would appear again at any second. "I don't blame you for not telling anyone. But I have to ask, why was he bothering you like that?"
"Really." He peered sincerely into her eyes with his own aqua ones. "You are my sidekick, after all." A warm smile broke through, and he winked at her.
He grunted as she tackled him, rolling over automatically as she did so. He raised his eyebrow and crooked her a small smile.
He laughed, rolling all the way around until he was on his stomach again. "Excuse me; do I look like a pillow to you?"
He grumbled. "I'm too old to chase after you," he grunted, stretched out his paws like he was dragging his body across the ground.
"You don't know that," he scoffed at Shae then he threw a friendly smile in Whisper's direction.
He watched Whisper for a moment and then heaved himself to his paws, allowing himself to grunt a couple times to play the "old" role he had just given himself (and in the meantime, he tried his best not to let a smile break through his hard, focused mask).
He shook out his black pelt and then nodded. "Of course. Follow me." He threw her a kind smile and then he turned away from the small clearing, following his nose now; hopefully he could hunt out a rabbit or vole or something small that wouldn't take a whole pack to catch.
To his relief, it was merely seconds until he came across a rabbit's scent trail; it was very fresh, too, which meant that it had only passed by minutes before. He breathed it in and turned in its direction, quickening his pace but still remaining silent.
In seconds he located the rabbit and almost immediately, he found himself to have tackled the white body and he snapped its neck before it could cry out. It was a pretty good catch. "Dinner is served," he barked, beckoning Whisper over with a flick of his tail.
