Sathyan Nair For those who are still trying to make sense of the "Lascari" words...Refer to
http://www.amitavghosh.com/Chrestomat...

hope it helps :)

Pallavi Even though lascari words are hard to understand, as u go on with the story u wil get a hold on them:)

Marianne my edition of this book had the Chrestomathy included at the end, but that did not help me with deciphering what Mr Doughty the pilot was saying.........

Shai Sachs For the first couple of paragraphs of Doughty's speech, I really tried to understand what the heck he was saying, word for word. Eventually I gave up and just sort of winged it. At that point it just became hilarious - really one of the funniest parts of the book, I thought.

Anne Sirand In addition to Ghosh "Chrestomathy" you can try :

but I don't think we need to know word by word

Kirk My favorite piece of slang was Mrs. Burnham's description to Paulette of using an outhouse as "going outside to drop a chitty in the dawk" (literally, drop a letter in the mailbox).

I rather liked that one, too :)

The slang could be a bit maddening, but one of the things that made the novel a delight.

I tried to figure it out at first too but then I felt that a lot of the time he was talking to Zachary who also had no idea what he was saying so I was like getting the authentic Zachary experience reading what he was saying.
