What's your take on the debate? What are the pros and cons of eReaders? Are you willing to take the step into the future of reading? Do you have any questions/recommendations?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I love collecting books as much as I like reading them. I think the only reason I'd want an eReader is because you can take many books with you, but not have to worry about weight or anything. But yes, I prefer print.

Valencia (empowered) | 1777 comments Mod
Yeah I use to be the exact same way!!! But convience, ease, and price won me over!! And privacy I can still admire my collection, but I don't have to worry about wondering eyes and sly comments.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

The price for eBooks is nice too, but you also can't get an eBook signed. lol Although, people seem to think taking my bookmark out is funny....

I HATE that ugh I let you see my book and you lose my page!!!! Outrageous! We don't get many authors down here in Mississippi so that wasn't a big worry. I guess the decision depends on your situation.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

I've had people walk by and just pull my bookmarks out. It's so frustrating!

My most prized book is my signed copy ofLast Sacrifice. I like having signatures. It makes it more yours.

Valencia (empowered) | 1777 comments Mod
I don't know if I could get my books signed even if authors came this way. I don't like my print books messed up in any way!! That's another reason I got an ereader I can erase anything I mark or simply look over it without losing my sanity.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

You can write on eReaders? That would be cool.

message 9: by Valencia, Boss Lady (new)

Valencia (empowered) | 1777 comments Mod
Yea you can make notes on the books you read. I also put a lot of my poetry on mine. I'm not sure if you can edit the writing you put on it I haven't tried it sooo...

Hahaha dang what kind do you have?

message 11: by Carly (new)

Carly I don't believe in eReaders. I love the feeling of a book in my hands.

message 12: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samanthaaajb) | 5 comments I never thought that I would get into eReaders, but ever since I got one for Christmas I haven't been able to put it down! I feel like its just a matter of getting used to. Plus its easy on the wallet :)

Yes they are very addictive!!! It's like a whole new world (= What kind do you have?

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Speaking of eReaders... My boyfriend was at BestBuy looking for a laptop, so I wandered around the store and found the eReaders. I was standing by one when an employee came up and asked if I needed help with the eReaders. No, I just found Hunger Games and was reading it. lol

I'm debating if I want to get one, and if I do, I'll probably get a Kindle Fire.

They're great devices!! I love mines and the Kindle Fire is fine too I guess..........BUT the new Nook Tablet is $169 now (: just saying hehehe

message 16: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) though I have a kindle. I still prefer real books. I just love the smell of books.

message 17: by Carly (new)

Carly @Beatrice ditto

message 18: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 102 comments I prefer having a physical book in my hands. It's just more satisfying. However, I still read ebooks on my computer and I don't really have anything against them. I wouldn't replace printed books with ebooks, but I still like both for different reasons.

message 19: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (meimei42) I live for my ebooks. I got my kindle a year ago and I've read more books in one year than I probably have in my entire life combines. (I read a LOT of books this year). I love that if you aren't sure about a book you can send yourself a preview and read the first couple of chapters to see if you dig a book. And as soon as I finish a book in a series, I push a button and I have the next one. I also find it easier to hold my kindle (with its awesome built in booklight). I'm one of those weird people who thinks my hands are always dry and so when I read a paper book I have to put lotion on my hands like 12 times because it feels like my thumbs are drying out on the pages. Not with my kindle. Its lightweight. When I got on the vacation in a couple of days and have six hours on a plane, I have my choice a books right at my fingertips. I used to carry two books on every flight. Now I just bring my kindle. Serious--I go get my oil changed, I have to wait at the doctors office, I'm waiting for my husband to get out of work--it's all right there for me to read and fits easily into my purse.

I never cared (or not cared) for the smell or feel of books so it doesn't bother me not to have it. I figure whatever gets me reading is a beautiful thing.

Amen to reading a lot of books. I've devored like 8-10 books these past 2 weeks. It would take me a month to read that much with print books because you have to keep going to stores or to the library and pray they have the book you want in or wait a week to get it. You couldn't pay me to give up my eReader!!

Amen! Since summer began (in mid June--so in one month) I have read 20 books. My kindle has been instrumental in that.

So my kindle = love.

message 22: by Mehak (new)

Mehak (zrunx_16) | 3 comments i love the original form of books ... to hold the book is more of an interaction with the story then and ebook... but i absolutely can't live without my e-reader !!! -- no hard or soft covers where i am at =S

message 23: by Bookgeek_zah (new)

Bookgeek_zah | 11 comments Ikr? I agree with you Mehak, nothing can compare to feeling the pages of a book under your fingertips as you not only read but digest the content. However I also cannot imagine life without my e-reader because I rely on it for entertainment when I travel.

message 24: by Jane (new)

Jane | 1 comments I prefer prints than e-books, because I love the feeling of holding the book and "tear" each page. :D

message 25: by Camille (new)

Camille (camille_leone) | 4 comments I'm slowly being won over by my ereading devices, but in truth if I like an ebook I will order the paperback copy at least. In some cases I'll order a hardback copy, just because I like pulling them out of the bookcase and flipping through the physical pages.

Plus I get eye strain from my ereader and my laptop when I stay on too long.

message 26: by Cassandra (last edited Jul 16, 2012 09:14AM) (new)

Cassandra Giovanni | 90 comments I like both. I've been reading a lot of Indie authors lately and their Ebooks are very affordable, but I've been reading on my iPhone, so my wonderful husband went out and purchased a kindle fire for me. I LOVE it, it's great all around for reading and more than reading. It has a great feature where you can make the background black and text white. It's good for night reading this way!

message 27: by Brandt (new)

Brandt (brandtjohnson) I prefer ebooks. I love my Nook Tablet! Honestly, without it, I don't think I'd read much. I love being able to browse for any book and preview it before instantly downloading it to my device.

message 28: by Regil (new)

Regil Aput (arhe) | 3 comments I still prefer prints than ebooks. There is a feeling of fulfillment when I'm done reading a book than ebooks. Buying books and making my daily schedules which includes reading the physical book is a thing I don't wanna change. After reading, it is my nature also to give my books to the closest person I have or those who loves to read too.

message 29: by Abby (new)

Abby Before I got my Kindle, I strongly disliked the thought of reading through anything other than a regular book - the smell, the feel, the sound, and how its easy to instantly become immersed in the story. But now, reading is easier and quicker, especially for series. Plus, I can instantly get a book I want delivered from Amazon - even when I'm not home.

message 30: by Kelly (last edited Jul 21, 2012 12:48PM) (new)

Kelly (kelly-is-reading) I too hated the idea before i got my kindle but now its so convenient sometimes to get ebooks instead, especially if you are in a hurry, or for series as Abby said above. Travelling is another strong point. I still buy print books especially if its a book i think i'm going to want to keep and read again, however.

I hope you guys don't think of this as spam but i'm currently doing a dissertation relating to new technology and reading; specifically on social features, and i'd like some respondents that use Goodreads if possible as i have a couple of questions on it. It should take less than 10 minutes, in fact probably less than 5, and responses are anonymous and just help me with my scholarly research. You should live in the UK, though- as i'm researching the UK book market.
This is the link - https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3TNNPVW
Thanks to anyone who could spare the time.
Kelly.

Hannah | 119 comments Print, i love being able to say i have a book shelf full of book lol

message 32: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly-is-reading) Yeah - thats one of the things - i want to have a library! I don't care that i already don't have room for any more books on my shelves, haha! But there is definitely a place too for e-books- especially with things like the highlighting function- a few times since i started using my kindle i've gone back to a print book and gone to look for the highlight function only to realise that- stupid me- i'm reading a print book and i don't have a highlight function.

HAHA yeah i have a over flow of book ILOVEIT <3

message 34: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly-is-reading) I'm currently piling books up in front of other books - its getting bad :D I need a new shelf. Or entire room.

message 35: by Ally (new)

Ally @Kelly - filled out the survey for you!

message 36: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kelly-is-reading) Oh thanks Ally! I really appreciate it :)

message 37: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (missams) | 18 comments I am for both. I love reading from books. I love feeling the pages, and with some books, the little quirks that the authors use. However, I do love the conviece of the ereader. I love the idea that I can change the font and the print of tje book for an easier read. I do enjoy a black pages with white print, verses the white pages and the black print.

message 38: by Terab (new)

Terab (fiddylover) | 34 comments When I first got my ereader (it was a gift) I was very intimidated and didn't purchase any ebooks for months. Then I was going on vacation & didn't want to lug around PB's so I downloaded a couple of books and then realized OMG, this is soooo easy! I've been hooked ever since. It gives me the luxury of reading more books than I ever imagined. Plus they are right at my fingertips, no longer do I have to wait to go to the store! Love ereaders!

Abby Kelly wrote: "I too hated the idea before i got my kindle but now its so convenient sometimes to get ebooks instead, especially if you are in a hurry, or for series as Abby said above. Travelling is another stro..."

Filled out your survey! Definitely agree that a print book is for keepers - ones that will be read and re-read. Also, Tera - I had the same experience. I realized that it was silly to lug my 3+ books on carry-on, so I just took my Kindle.

message 40: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccatheawesomeone) | 146 comments I really love my NOOK, but I have to say there is nothing better than owning the physical copy of a book (partly because of the intoxicating smeel that comes from a brand new book)

message 41: by Brooke (new)

Brooke (brookeluvsbooks) I like print books best, I have not got an ereader because my parents and I agree that we will go broke if I could get books so fast and easy :]. Also I want to have my own library of books to share with my friends.

message 42: by Regil (new)

Regil Aput (arhe) | 3 comments Print! The smell, the color of the pages, the cover, the picture of the author on the last page, the printed bookmarks ...everything- I do love it! When I tried e books, at first I got fascinated , that was also the time I started to miss the books.

message 43: by Doug (new)

Doug Hoffman (dshoffman) | 4 comments My Nook. (1) It fits well on the elliptical trainer at the gym; books don't fit and like to close. (2) I can read it in bed at night without disturbing my wife (it has a dim back-light, much dimmer than a clip-on book light). (3) I have a Nook app on my phone, so I can read my books even if I don't have my Nook with me. (4) I can carry dozens of books with me anywhere.

'Nuff said. But I still prefer the physical copy for graphic novels, of course.
