Jen (reader44ever) | 283 comments That's great that your husband is so enthusiastic about reading to the kids. It seems incredibly wrong to me that he was reprimanded, and to hear that the principal removed all the books and installed computers is absolutely appalling to me. I'm sorry this happened to him. His experiences with the assisted living and nursing home folks, though, helps to alleviate my anger on his behalf.

I haven't yet read The One and Only Ivan, but it is on my TBR list and my library system already owns it, so I'll read it someday soonish. :)

One of the best way to find children's books I like is probably just to visit my Children's + To-Gift shelves. All of the titles that have a "Date Read" also have a review, so you can see my comments if you'd like.

One children's book I read recently that I absolutely loved, however, is Mole Music. Not only do I plan to gift this book to my nieces, but I also plan to buy a copy for myself. :) My own childhood favorites include the following series: Amelia Bedelia, Berenstain Bears, Frog and Toad (by Arnold Lobel)

I probably should have written most of this somewhere else. Sorry for being off-topic!

Back on topic, I have holds at the library for the other four Odd Thomas books that precede Deeply Odd. I should be able to get all of them on Saturday, so when my turn comes up for Deeply Odd in a couple weeks, I'll be ready to read it. :)

Oh yeah, they could totally appear in another novel or two since they get around.

I liked the references to other Koontz books such as Moonlight Bay and Twilight Eyes.

I am almost finished. When I started I thought I was really going to love this one because of the idea of alternate realities and that we create our own reality. However, the religious overtones in Deeply Odd are too much and I will likely be rating it 4 stars. I liked last year's Odd Apocalypse better. I do like the participation of Alfred Hitchcock in Deeply Odd and I absolutely LOVE the character of Mrs. Fischer. She is not only my favorite character in this book but my favorite thing about the book. Mrs. Fischer is fantastic!

I love how Dean just decides to start calling a character in one of his novels by a peculiar name because of how they act or what they are wearing - "Like a Rhinestone Cowboy" for instance :-)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Thanks for the link Dustin, I hadn't seen that before, all I could picture was the movie with Robert Redford on his horse with all the lights attached and that scene was so sad. The Glen Campbell video is nicer.

You are most welcome :-) Finished the book last night. I'll give it 4 stars.

I really like that Rhinestone Cowboy song by Glen Campbell :-)

Scribblescribe Does anyone know when the book will be released in mass market paperback?

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments I would be willing to take a guess that it will be released about a month before the next Odd Thomas book, as I think that is a pattern I have seen evolving. If I am not mistaken that is supposed to be out next winter, so I wouldn't be surprised if the paperback of Deeply Odd isn't released in time for Christmas. Again I am only guessing.

Thanks for responding. :) I'll keep that in mind. Guess I'll only be reading 2 books of Koontz a year now instead of the glut of 13 I just read.

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments ahhh the advantages of Kindle. I can get most books (not Koontz) cheaper on Kindle. If you don't want to wait you can try BOM2. Their hardbacks are usually 10.95 for me (includes sales tax)

Calico1 | 1 comments I think I also found a reference to another of my faves... 'Might as well eat' sounds like a reference to "Life Expectancy"!

Emily | 6 comments I finished Deeply Odd this morning. So glad I went back to it after getting bored in the beginning. I ended up loving it! I have an unanswered question though. Did I miss the part where the explanation point pin was explained? This is still burning in my mind. The rhinestone cowboy makes such a big deal out of it when he sees it, it has me curious! Thanks!

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Now you've got me wondering. Can you tell me what you mean by "explanation point pin", and where in the book you found the reference that is making you question.?

The old lady, Edie Fischer was her name I think, wears a pin shaped like an explanation point.

So, Emily the religious aspect of the story didn't ruin Deeply Odd for you like it did me? I loved the idea of alternate realities that was presented in the beginning, I like the Rhinestone Cowboy character as well as Edie Fischer, but alas when it got into (view spoiler) the story was just ruined for me :-(

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Oh yes... the pin the old lady wore! That's something too I didn't quite figure out. Anyone else want to share what you think about the pin. Sometimes Koontz does seem to leave things open to our interpretation.

I really enjoy exploring the good vs. evil aspects in the Koontz novels. Often his "good" characters are speaking to me personally about what I need to be aiming towards in living in my life. But mostly I like reading Koontz because it's just plain fun. My read over and over again book is probably Watchers because I wish I had an Einstein.

Maybe we find out lots of answers next year in Saint Odd. We can hope. It's going to be interesting to see if Dean can wrap everything up nicely in one more book and come full circle to Pico Mundo. Of course, there will most likely remain some unanswered questions.

Emily | 6 comments The religion didn't hurt the story for me at all. In fact, one of the things that I love most about reading Koontz is that he is able to weave a deep story!
So, about the pin. Ms. Fischer pins it on Odd and as he is in the final scene with the Rhinestone Cowboy, the cowboy notices it and is very alarmed states (paraphrased), "Where did you get that? Who gave you that pin?!" but it is never revisited and it's killing me!

Well, I don't think that's gonna happen. I'm not trying to be a pessimist - I'm just striving to be a realist. Is Doctor Sleep by Stephen King running in the same category? If so, there you go :-)

Tracy | 528 comments Yes he is DC but you never know.

Tracy | 528 comments Well...he did make it to the second round

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments I thought the same thing when I saw the title Doctor Sleep.

Tracy | 528 comments I know, I know but we can at least try to get him to the next round.

Tracy | 528 comments It's on the homepage of Goodreads Blondie. When you are on homepage at the top it says cast your vote. You can vote on the different categories there and Koontz is in Horror

Tracy | 528 comments I think you will be OK Blondie. They made it pretty simple
