But as someone noted earlier, it is definitely easier if everyone adds link to their pages as opposed to just there usernames!

Not always about writing but can be sometimes.

Hi Lilo,
I would say joining various social media sites is important if you're an author or if you find it fun. However, my advice is to take it slowly.
Enjoy Goodreads. When you feel like another site might be fun, try it out. I don't recommend joining all of them at once because that would be overwhelming and sour you towards all of them.
I've followed my own advice, starting with Facebook a couple years ago, then LinkedIn a little later. Last year, late in the year, I joined Goodreads. And finally, just a few months ago, I joined Twitter and blogspot.
I found linking my Goodreads account to twitter helps keep posts flowing to that site, and linking twitter to facebook forwards those and any other posts to that site. That way I'm not jumping from one to the other in a frenzied neverending cycle of updates. I manually share my blogposts to Twitter and find it brings a lot of views.

I'm with you, Lilo - I find looking at Twitter too much to be a little bit stressful. And social media can be a huge time suck. I'm on Facebook and Goodreads and I'd like to follow everyone who follows me on Twitter but then my Twitter feed gets overwhelming...

Reviews, contests, blog tour hostess with the mostest, deals... and lots of Mom Snarkiness!!

If you want people to read your books, you have to make every effort to get the word out to as many people as possible ie chatting in Goodreads groups, promoting yourself/blog/books etc on social networking sites, events and giveaways, read and review. Sitting back and hoping they find you won't work. I'm a reviewer and blogger who spends hours every day tweeting and messaging about books I've reviewed, books I've downloaded that interest me and promoting authors I meet through Goodreads. The more an author connects with people like us, the more we promote you for free. Yes authors have busy lives but so do the people that read your books. We have jobs and families and things to do so if you want us to give up our spare time to read and promote you, you need to spend time getting your name out there to us as well!

You won't get bombarded with daily "Buy-my-book" tweets.

Cheers, I hope to follow many of you back and see your literary adventures. Also, if you fancy, take a look at the first chapter of my book!: http://bit.ly/176cTNg
