Everybody seems to agree that if Finnick was to die, his death should have been more memorable. I wonder of Hollywood will make a note of that and gives him a glorious death when they make the movie based on this book. After all, its begging to see him in action with his amazing tridend .

Idk, I don't really think any of the deaths are "unnecessary" to the plot. Not that I wanted anyone to die, because I loved all the characters, but it's a book about war, rebellion and sacrifice. People die in situations like these. I was actually surprised both Peeta AND Gale made it out alive, I thought one of them would die for sure.

It did not evoke the emotion that the first book did ..."I didn't feel that way at all. Remember, the books are from the point of view of Katniss. Prim's actual death scene couldn't be drawn out because Katniss was blown up with her. With Rue Katniss was fully conscious, aware and had time to mourn her death right then. Even though it was quick, I still thought Prim's death was pretty dramatic and shocking. Also, it pretty much drove Katniss over the edge to total insanity....so guess I don't really think it was "glossed over," the actual event just happened so fast.

Very nice reasoning! I know it seems a bit drastic and harsh when people start dying. But how would things have gone on without those deaths...if everyone went back for Finnick? If Gale stuck around and kept things at an eternal stalemate with Katniss? In a real war if someone gets caught in a trap...sometimes you have to go on without them (Finnick). You can't just hit the pause button. In real life, sometimes two people who were once very close grow apart without any cause or explanation (Gale). I know sometimes people feel cheated when their favorite parts or characters aren't elaborated in a book. But that's because the WRITER decided that person wasn't supposed to be a major part of the story anymore. The parts she left out were minor in her eyes, if you think they weren't then imagine them differently.
Finnick i agree it's like what charcater can i kill off next?? ahh lets kill Finnick! I was like WHAT????!! Why?

I think it was important that a lot of characters died to show how devastating because if at the end of it, Katniss still had everybody she loved and nobody had died, like Darius and Madge, then there woudlnt have been much point in it. Finnicks death did annoy me though because it didnt even say that he had died and none of the characters asked about him or acted sad :/

Finnick. Defenitly. it was like when she killed rue, or any one else, exept, i loved Finick. he was, and is, my fav charecter. Prim died to give Katness a reson to kill coin, but Finnick?! only thing worse then his death would have been if she killed Gale of to. Grr, i love finnick

finnick i would like to say prim or cinna but they were necessary :(

The author could have written some great spin offs based on quite a few of these characters.
I'm one of those people that say, "oh god, I HATE any kind of Hollywood happy endings bullshit," but when it comes to losing my favorite characters in a movie or a novel, I just fall to pieces :-(
Finnick and Cinna!!!! we didn't even know what happened to cinna exactly.... for al we know he didn't and he escaped and lives happily ever after too or maybe he dies too... and finnick OMG he was my favorite character of all time.they didn't even mourned him. I would have rather see gale die than finnick... gale was so plain....

i think Finnick should have lived... at least till he saw his baby boy and Cinna shouldn't have died. he was katniss' sanity most of the time. also, the ending was inconclusive. what happened to gale? did he get married? does katniss ever see her mother again? the series left me hanging..

Finnick's death was totally unnecessary... Prim's death I could accept because it helped Katniss find out what kind of person Coin really is but Finnick? Oh hell no! He should have lived.. T.T

Cinna and Finnick. I love these guys. Though Prim is a nice character I think you have to kill her to show a great deal of impact to the heroine.
I think there should be a sequel... Beyond the Hunger Games... and in it, it should describe the scene with Finnick and the mutts... and it should explain how brave and fearless he was and how skilled and mighty with his trident and how he managed to fend them off and survive and live happily ever after with Annie. Yes, that would be awesome =)

0.0 I totally forgot about Cinna... Until the end of Mockingjay I was still hoping that he's alive somehow and he'll just pop out and give Katniss a big hug T.T
Finnick. His death was like Sirius dying all over again: killed so quickly and with no warning. I had to reread that part to understand he was really gone.

Kate wrote: "Finnick. His death was like Sirius dying all over again: killed so quickly and with no warning. I had to reread that part to understand he was really gone."me too!!
The most heart-breaking death for me was definitely Cinna. Also, I found it very sad that Peeta's entire family was killed (and hardly anyone ever mentions it!). But I'm sure Collins had motives for every death she wrote in.

I think she over did the whole killing off of really great characters. The author could have written some great spin offs based on quite a few of these characters.Maybe that's what Collins was trying to avoid! Sometimes authors like to move on to other projects, but while characters live and there's money to be made, publishers will put pressure on them to write a new installment. I don't blame her at all for clearing the slate, so to speak, if she felt it was the time to do it.
If there is one thing I learned from my creative writing professor, it was how to work with character deaths. "Why have one dead body when you can have ten?" This can be a very effective tool for authors. However, the ten dead bodies need to be there for a reason. "Every part of the story must serve a purpose, even if it is a small one." When you put something into a story, the reader should not be asking why it was there when they are done reading. This is what happened with Finnick's death. Each previous death had a purpose. The greater the character connections, the harder the death scene struck home. This was the pattern before his death and the pattern afterwards. Finnick's was brief. It was a footnote. There was no benefit. His death was pointless, as if he had just randomly keeled over and been forgotten. This was the mistake. His death could have added to the story, but I felt like it was thrown in there as a quick though in the midst of action. That is why it seems so out of place and unnecessary.
Even the faceless characters that we barely had connections with were given more meaningful deaths, and Finnick was supposed to share a connection with Katniss. They shared in the madness that belonged only to the victors. They both knew the pain of separation and worry of what the Capitol might do to their loved ones. He was a support to Katniss and deserved more than the quick brush off he received. I would be okay with his death, if it had matched his importance as a character but it didn't. That is why his death was unnecessary and awkward and pretty much one of the only reasons I gave the book a 3 star rating.
Finnick. Katniss should have helped him, or someone should of helped him, it's not all about her like she thinks:( arghh I get so worked up over things like this. I don't know why Prim had to die either, why couldn't she have just been wounded or something? She was so young:(

Finnick & Cinna. Mostly Finnick I was like seriously you could have least gave him a better death.Madge didn't really need to die it was totally unnecessary.
Also I kind of felt that she didn't need to kill Mr.Mellark (Peeta's Dad)for some reason in my head I thought him and Mrs.Everdeen (Katniss's Mother)would get together in the end.I have no Idea why I thought this but I did.
But I think killing Finnick was her biggest mistake. I was so mad and I still am.

finnick. his death was pointless it didnt change anything and killed what could have been a good realationship (his and katniss's families), somneone besides katniss should have had a happy ending.I get why prim had to die but she should have done it better. i had to read it twice to get that she was dead
and also wiress, she would have been a really good charecter in the last book
I had no problem with any of the characters actually dying. There was a huge, bloody war going on..you knew many lives were going to be lost. I just HATED the way she handled Finnick's death. It bothered me soo much. It was rushed and pointless. After everything Finnick had been through, he deserved a more noble death than that. And his death was barely even acknowledged. I actually hope they change that scene in the movie (and I like when movies stay true to the book). Also, she could have handled the death of Prim better. Again, I had no problem with Prim dying (even if it is sad) and her death did serve a purpose in the story. But everything seemed rushed through with that as well. Collins just wasn't able to capture the raw emotion that Prim's death should have evoked.
