message 1: by Gertie (new)

Gertie (gertiebird) | 225 comments So, today I "threw out" my back. We all know what that means, but on the surface it seems an odd choice of words, doesn't it?

message 2: by Cheri (new)

Cheri | 795 comments We got to get this 'off the ground' meaning something needs to get started but why off the ground?

message 3: by Phil (new)

From rocket launches, maybe?

message 6: by David (new)

David Ottenstein (dwotter) | 11 comments The one that gets me every time is "think outside the box". It doesn't really mean anything but somehow became a 90's buzzword like catch phrase.

Also, buzzword bothers me a little.

message 7: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments "Make up." This makes no literal sense, yet it has several meanings. You can make up your face, make up your bed, make up with a friend.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1106 comments Could someone please explain the phrase "can't have your pie and eat it too"?

It makes no sense at all. If I have pie, I'm jolly well not going to just stare at it, am I? Unless of course there's lamb in it.

Phil | 11837 comments evie wrote: "During my childhood if Mum was annoyed with something she'd say

I've always heard, "gets my goat." Yours is the first I've heard of anything being on the goat.

message 17: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Rachel wrote: "Could someone please explain the phrase "can't have your pie and eat it too"?"

I've always heard this as "cake." But aside from that, it means that you can't still have it around if you go ahead and eat it. Like, you can't "have" the $50 if you spend it on dinner in a restaurant.

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Exactly.

"Be well." I hate it when people say this. You're commanding someone to be well? What if they don't have total control over their wellbeing? Maybe they have a cancerous tumor.

Susan | 6406 comments How about, "Be swell"?

message 36: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) New Age bullshit as opposed to Old Age bullshit?

message 37: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)
