At the risk of sounding cliched, I would take the Bible. Not just for spiritual reasons, but also because it is long and has a lot of variety for my sometimes-short attention span.

Although I am not a bible reader, I think that is a great choice for the same reasons that you give. There are some good stories and poetry in it.
