Oops...looking at that list and the authors of Black Thunder and Black Mamba Boy are transposed...I'll also give you more titles that have been on polls as they come to me...
I would also suggest to add some books from this shelf -- or did you want us to be adding books too? http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...
thanks for the suggestion, regina. were you thinking of a dedicated shelf, something like "hispanic lit. fic."? that would create the problem that we don't have shelves for any other subgenre... but then, we don't need to do everything at once and we don't even need to be thorough!what do people say?
How about as people read from this and other POC lists, and deem the book worthy, they add them as suggestions to the READ AND RECOMMEND POSTS and the Mods take it from there to add to polls.
Jo, I don't know what the policy is or how people use the shelves, so I hate to suggest something that won't work. I still feel too new. :) My personal belief is that we don't need dedicated shelves just for latino authored books, I guess I thought they could share a shelf. :)
jean: do you think it would be good to have a shelf with the books that people marked as "read and recommended?"regina: so far our only two shelves are "in polls not selected" and "in polls selected." how do i go about this?
also, it must be said that anyone can add books to the bookshelf, and people do. anyone feels we should tidy that up a bit?

Yes I do, Jo. Maybe add one or two to the monthly polls. Just a thought.
jo wrote: "also, it must be said that anyone can add books to the bookshelf, and people do. anyone feels we should tidy that up a bit? ..."What would you suggest, jo? Some groups only allow the moderators to add books, but I'm not really comfortable with that. We "inherited" the system from the group founder Rona and have just changed things when an issue arises. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome.
to jean: that's easy to do. i'll create the shelf and put the books up! as for adding to the monthly poll, i propose that william takes a look at them and makes sure they lend themselves to our purposes etc. i implicitly trust him to do a good job! to mina: i think i'd like to ask first if people use the bookshelf or would like to use it. if no one looks at it there's no point in putting work into it, but if people think it is or can be a useful tool, then we can organize it better. btw, i, too, am in favor of keeping everything open to everyone.
And I implicitly trust our members to pick on the polls the National book award winners, Pen/Faulkner winners, Book Circle, Booker Prize, etc, etc,..we are consistently ahead of the curve as a group in choosing the best POC literature. My job is to whittle the 100 possible books (as evidenced by the "members choose" poll) to 5 per month. This group has had explosive growth and with that comes the desire for books more attuned to the newer members interests. I am not an autocrat and in no way do I see myself as the book nazi. I have 2 suggestions : post 10 books to choose monthly or run a "members choose" poll thread each month before the poll and only post the top 5 on poll to choose from.I'm not crazy enough to think that my selections will please all 900 plus members of our group but every poll since the "members nominate" thread in November has included at least 2 of the members books suggestions in an effort o make more members feel more inclusive....
Sooooo...I suggest: increasing the poll to 10 books per month...or a poll before the poll to choose books to include on the monthly poll? Or continue to allow me to do my thing (lol)?

i'm with jean. just keep doing your thing, bill. let's not complicate things. and you DO include books people recommend, so i don't see a problem there. if people do, though, please speak up!!!!
Please, Bill, keep doing what you've been doing. Anyone can bring a book to your attention, either through the "Read And Recommended" folder or directly. 10 books? I would hate to try to choose. Also, this group is for literary fiction. There are many other groups for other types of writing here on Goodreads, but as far as I know, we are the only group for literary fiction by people of color, and I trust your selections to keep us true to that goal.
yes, please. agree, agreed. thanks, Bill and moderators for making this group consistently welcoming amd engaging. thanks, too, to the person who told us about the sale of silver sparrow on kindle. reading it now. sorry to have missed the discussion, but as ever, grateful for the learning .
i'm returning to my librarian job after a long absence. apologies. the bookshelf is now up-to-date concerning books that have been in the polls. they are divided between selected and not selected. people have proposed that the books in the "read and recommended" thread be posted in the bookshelf. let me ask a question:
this group is about literary *fiction*. should i not enter in the bookshelf books that are not fiction, even though they were recommended?
another question:
at some point bill asked that we propose queer lit. by people of color. the list is quite impressive and pretty much unique. do you guys feel it would be good to have it on a shelf?
in the meantime, i'm going to start a shelf called "read and recommended." any suggestions concerning anything at all welcome.

to while away the holidays blues i've decided to hunt down as many book i can from past polls and catalog them nicely in our bookshelf. i've been doing this for a few hours today and i'll do more tomorrow. i'm basing myself on this list, the polls GR retains (the 8 most recent, including the current one), records of the picked books meticulously kept by wilhelmina, and my memory. if i'm leaving anything out please let me know.
some people thought it would be nice to have access to the polls themselves, which would give us a chance to see how the books got voted, etc., but this is not possible. if you can think of ways to enrich and improve the cataloging i'm doing now (including the shelves' names) please let me know.
concerning the bookshelf in general, people have been adding books following their own hearts' desires, and since people's hearts are fortunately different from one another, there is no true rhyme or reason to what's there (apart from, now, the books that have appeared in polls).
there were a few shelves (i may have created them myself some time ago, i don't remember) that divided books by race/geographical location, but since they weren't used much i deleted them.
any suggestion or desire, please let me know. otherwise i'm just going to do the polls and let a thousand flowers bloom.
