I guess you must be in the USA to be allowed to download those? Even with my Amazon account set to buy on Amazon.com and not .fr, "as if by chance" those books are not free for me. Am I being charged some stupid virtual VAT on the original price, or something, just because I'm in France?

Amazon, sometimes, you suck. :(

That really stinks... you would think when a book dropped to free, it would be free for all countries. :(

I'm not sure about that yet, but at some point, I created an account through Amazon.com, without entering my country (so I assume that it was defaulted to "USA"). When I then loaded the ebooks' pages, the Kindle versions were indeed priced at 0.00$. But I couldn't download them because I hadn't any Kindle registered on that account (my Kindle for PC is on my 'true', regular account). Then, when I logged back to my original account, and switched my Kindle-PC to "USA/dollars" instead of "France/euros" (for testing purposes), all the ebooks' prices were suddenly 3.33$. I suppose they weren't all four magically reversed to paid versions in two minutes, hence my conclusion.

I'll try with installing Kindle-PC on my old laptop, and register this one on my second account. Maybe it'll work. But whether it works or not, it's tremendously annoying that we have to waste time on things like that. Seriously, sometimes I'm really not surprised that people end up downoading pirated versions of basically anything, since doing it the legal way can be such a bother! :(

OK, enough with the trial & error mode.

Process to follow for those who aren't in the USA:
1) Create a second account on Amazon.com
2) Download and install Kindle for (your computer)
3) Register it with the ID + password of your second account
4) Go to the page of the free ebook (on amazon.com, not in your country) and buy it in 1-click.
5) When Amazon asks you for your address, input some bogus name, address + phone number in the USA. (I don't think they check or send you anything to check, but just to make sure, I used a real ZIP code and city + area phone code, even though the rest was all made up).

The things we do for the love of reading... *sighs*

I just hope I didn't accidentally input the real phone number of a real person. ^_^; But I doubt Amazon would phone them anyway.

Yup :) there are so many every day. Everyone should check the 100 top free list at least once a day. I get so many free books as well as sí many great sales. And u don't have to have an actual kindle. Just download the free kindle app and you're good to go :)
