I just received a Simple Touch for Christmas (thanks to my best friend) and I'm in love.

My only minor complaint is that on the onscreen keyboard there doesn't seem to be a "." key and I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. If its there and I'm just missing it or what.

The period is under the question mark -- it's hard to see!

message 3: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (eternity21) I got a new one for Christmas and I can't believe how light it is. I have the original one and it seems to weigh like four times as much.

I know, isn't it great?

message 5: by Storm (new)

Storm (stormgerlock) My sister just got one and it seems pretty cool. I'm just so attached to my original one, and it still works so well. But the newer ones just seem so amazing.

Shay (shaylyn318) My husband bought me one for Christmas. I love it. I already have the first edition, I am giving my old one to my daughter.

Thanks...its funny now that I look at it again I feel like a dummy for missing it.

message 9: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (LexaReads) | 3 comments I traded my first edition in for a simple touch plus the fifty dollar giftcard as a gift from my brother who paid for it. :) However, my touch screen keeps freezing up and I have to reboot my nook, which in turn loses my place in my book. I loved it until then. Tomorrow I'll take it in and see what the customer service says... Hopefully it's just a bad nook and I can trade it in for one that works correctly.

Natalie (bebe33075) | 52 comments Lexa, I've had mine a while and the freezing happened to me too. I called customer service and I forgot what we did but it's been fine since.

First thing to try with a freezing Touch is dusting it off. The sensors are very sensitive.

wow...is it as simple as this? My simple touch is locked, I cleaned the screen and whamo it unfroze!

Yup. Glad it worked!

Colleen | 2 comments I see people posting about wallpapers and screensavers. I have figured out how to add new screensavers, but do we even have wallpapers on the simple touch?

message 15: by willaful, dedicated nookworm (new)

I don't think we do, no.

No. the 1st edition had both screen savers and wallpaper and i believe the color has only wallpaper but no screensavers and the touch has only screen savers. i miss having both to be honest.

Yeah, I love my sexy TrueBlood wallpaper on my old Nook. :-) Can't have it for a screensaver, not with a ten year old around!

message 18: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamie74) Does anyone know if there is a way or how to change the pages read to percentage read on my Nook? Since having the Nook Touch I have been choosing the ebook edition of books here on GR's. But when I want to update my status it asks what percentage I have read instead of the page I am on.
Any help would be great :)

I do it the old fashioned way.....math:
If I am on page 32 of 225 I just divide 32 by 225 and get 14.22%

message 20: by Liza (new)

Liza (Bookie121) On the NST, if you finger tap the screen and go to the more option on the bottom it will say share, once you click that it'll have other options. Click "post reading status" and it will give you percentage read. Then just cancel out of there :)

message 21: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 340 comments On your goodreads page you can just click the percentage sign and it will automatically change to page #. If the page # is incorrect and you did buy it from an authorized site like B&N (not that you wouldn't) you can ask a GR librarian on this thread to update the pages.

Colleen | 2 comments Linda wrote: "How do we add screensavers on the Nook Simple Touch????"

Connect your nook to your computer and explore it like you would a hard drive. There is a folder titled screensavers. Create a new folder inside the screensavers folder. The folder should be labeled with the name of the new screensaver(this is how it will appear on your menu). In the folder, place all of the pictures you would like to be part of the screensaver inside the folder (800x600 pixels). If you are downloading the screensaver from a website make sure that it is in a normal folder (not zipped) and paste it into the folder. Once the file has transferred, you can disconnect your nook and it will be an option for you to chose under screensavers. I found some great ones at www.nook-look.com

The reason you are getting percents is that your probably using the kindle version of the book when you update here on goodreads. they don't have page numbers. I always make sure i change to the ebook edition and if its incorrect (says 0 pages) i post int he thread where one of the librarians will correct the page count.

message 26: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamie74) Thank you for responding...I double checked that to make sure and i do choose the ebook edition and not the kindle edition. I learned thought that if I click on the % I can change it to the page and then just add what page I am on...so simple :)

Jamie (jamie74) Has anyone ever had a problem with the side bar page turners not working? I am just wondering if this is a common problem. Also with it not going to sleep..mine from time to time seems to stay awake for hours until I press the button to make it go to sleep...lol.

I haven't had that issue. even though its a touch i tend to use the the buttons out of habit. the only issue i have is sometimes it jumps more than 1 page. Mine also sporadically doesn't go to sleep. I never know when it will or won't but i don't worry to much because the battery life doesn't seem to be affected by it.

They are sending me a new one. They tried to give me a reconditioned one but I called and argued that mine is not even a month old...so a new one is in the mail :)

Sandra (readingontheporch) Just bought one for my kid. How do I lock the purchase function? I don't want him to go on helter-skelter and order a bunch of books.

message 31: by Susan (last edited Jan 25, 2012 08:04PM) (new)

Susan | 23 comments You would go into your "settings" then into "shop". That is where you can require a password for a purchase. As long as you don't let him know what the password is, he can't buy anything.

Does anyone know how to set the nook so that it doesn't automatically download purchases?

Turn off your wireless.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I tried that but then when I turn my wireless back on it automatically begins downloading my most recent purchases.

I actually ended up calling Barnes&Noble and was informed that there is no way to stop it from doing the automatic downloads.

Two questions: Why don't you want it to download your books? And why do you want your wireless on if you're not going to shop?

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

When I buy a new book I'm not always planning on reading it right away and if all the books I buy end up automatically downloading than I run out of space on my nook. As far as the wireless goes, I sometimes like the share books or recommendations with my friends even though I'm not shopping.

I've had a Nook for over two years and haven't even cracked a dent in the space. I have over 345 books on mine. Besides you can always buy the extra card for more space. If I'm not ready to buy a certain book, I often get the sample. But I really don't think you need to worry about running out of space.

message 39: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) I just checked the specs on the Nook Simple Touch and it has 2 GB which holds 1000 books. And you can add the SG Card with 32 GB. If you guesstimate 500 books per gigabyte, that's a lotta books.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

It does have a lot of space and if I didn't have such an impulse when it comes to buying books I may not be too worried about it. However, with over 1000 on my nook and another 1500 on my SD card, I tend to be very aware of space.

Well clearly you buy more books than I do, but you've only used up 3 of the 32 gigabytes on your SD card at that. You may have to start reading and stop buying.

message 42: by Michelle (last edited Mar 21, 2012 08:54AM) (new)

Michelle I have a question about the simple touch - actually how much read time to you really get in one charge? The advertisement indicates 1 hour per day for two months which would mean 60ish hours.

I have the Nook Color and I love it; however, my battery life is only 4-5 hours and this is with the Wifi off and the brightness at 1/2. I am okay when I am reading around the house on the weekend, but when traveling I have become very frustrated. I have to scrounge around the airports looking for electrical outlets to charge in between flights to get extra reading time.

Anyway, I may get the simple touch and use it for traveling and outdoor reading and keep the Color for bedtime...

Thanks for any insight you can give me!

My Touch has excellent battery life and also charges very quickly. I've never run numbers, but it was a huge change from my old Nook.

You can sometimes find special deals on the Touch.

message 44: by michelle+8 (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Michelle, with the Wi-Fi off and reading several hours a day, I usually get at least two weeks out of the battery. Some days I have literally done nothing all day long but read on my Nook, and not even worried about the battery.
