Mockingjay
question
Why do so many people die in these books?

I was wondering how Collins got the idea for such gory books! Can anyone tell me?
I think it was necessary to have the deaths
This was a book about war and revolution, about battling to survive. I'd have been offended if we had all this bloody conflict and people didn't die - I applaud it for being an unsanitised look at the cost of battle.
They achieved freedom - potentially, depending on the new regime - but it cost blood to do it

well may i remkind you, it's a WAR. people die in wars. you think that she would write a story about a war and not have anyone die? i think not.
As people said it is war, so it would be unrealistic if alot of people didn't die.
But as far as where she got the idea, I read that she got it from Theseus, the ancient mythical founder of Athens. I'm not real familiar, but I think they said they held some sort of gladiator fights with kids.
Also, her father was in the military. He served in the Vietnam War. So, she understands having someone she loves go off to war.

It's a war. It's that simple. When the publisher rushed to the phone to call Collins after she read of Prim's death and begged Collins not to kill her, Collins answered, "This is a war."
People die in wars. It's pure and simple. And I don't think it's about Collins being vengeful or murderous, it's about her being a convincing writer. As aforementioned, people die in wars and you can't blame Collins for recognising that people need to die. And from the aspect or trying to engage with the reader, we wouldn't be having this conversation if Finnick and Prim didn't die. Because they were lovely characters, they were brilliant and it was incredibly sad that they died. And that is the response Collins was probably going for. An amazing book is a book that leaves you talking and questioning long after you have read it. The Hunger Games trilogoy is most certainly amazing!
Reiterating what everyone said: It's a war! War creates casualties.
I knew it was impossible that Rue would live but I had hoped somehow she would. No, I don't want many people to die in the story especially Gale or Peeta, but killing off certain characters makes it more realistic and it makes us think about the situation overall. I doubt we'd really think about the situation had Prim, Rue and everyone else lived and somehow the situation magically turned out all for the better. When someone dies, it forces you to think, was it worth it? In this case, yes. There were MANY casualties, but there would've been countless more throughout the years had the games not been stopped.

Okay, usually I write a few paragraphs on discussions but this has a pretty simple answer:
IT'S A WAR!
What do you expect? Those aren't Nerf Guns they are shooting.
