Elizabeth Risley (ElizabethRisley) | 228 comments As I stared my re-read it reminded me of something related to things that seem to come up often so I thought people could comment on things that they saw. Nothing really spoilerish here - just some interesting observations.

1 - The dramatic play, "The Crown Conspiracy" and later "Betrayal at Medford" that recounts the tales (as told through the stage) of the first book.

2 - Hadrian's constanst search for a "new job". He really wants to be doing anything other than what he is and is always trying to convice Royce to go into other lines of work: Fisherman, Actor, Winemaker

3 - Arista's Hairbrushes - gifts from her father they mean more to her than any other object - for her father really didn't verbalize "I love you" but each hairbrush was the embodiement of how he felt. (view spoiler)

4 - Mythology and in particular the story of Kile...a God who does a terrible deed and is on a search to redeem himself. I'm still not sure eactly what this story means - but the fact that it is referrenced often makes me think there is something important here that I'm missing. Here's to hoping that it is more than just "background information".

5 - Royce's "I told you so" attitude toward Hadrian. It seems that Hadrian is always acting in a way that is Royce knows is destined to "go bad" and yet he sticks with him ... mostly out of loyalty ... a bit out of his lack of other friends ... and a lot because he needs to be there so Hadrian doesn't get himself in to deep.

Ena (enantoiel) | 36 comments One other recurring element, as Royce points out in the book is our duo is hired to steal a sword twice and both goes awry. Thankfully the one that accepted second job was Royce, or Hadrian would have never heard the last of it.

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 313 comments @Elizabeth - here's a little behind the scenes. In the orignal version of Avempartha they are just walking by a sign for a theater and in editing Robin made "the play" being shown "The Crown Conspiray" you are correct in that from that point on it became a running gag throughout the series and I had fun trying to work it in.

You are right Hadrian is an "unhappy camper" and doesn't like his job. Although it is better than "the last one he had" that you find out more about as the series progresses.

Thanks for noticing Arista and her hair brushes. These are things that I put in and wonder if anyone will even notice their significance - I'm glad to see that at least one person did.

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 313 comments Ena - I always liked the scene where Hadrian is trying to let Thrace down gently then Royce steps in and tells her they'll "take the job." Royce will have plenty of things to blame on Hadrian as you point out but yes at least the fiasco that was Avempartha was not one of them.

Rachel I've noticed the recurrence of Arista's hairbrushes as well. I find it particularly interesting that the one brush Arista has left is from Tur Del Fur, and that this gets mentioned several times. Given the legend surrounding Tur Del Fur (Kile) and speculation about Alverstone being a Tur blade... I mean, I know it's a hairbrush and not a weapon, but it does seem a bit of a coincidence.

Michael (michaeljsullivan) | 313 comments Rachel - not ignoring your post...but also not commenting either. Oh I can't wait until posts arrive in the last book.

Ena you made me contemplate something...One thing that I just realized is that things don't often work out the way Royce and Hadrian want them to. In other words the chips don't always fall in their favor. In many cases they outright fail at what they're asked to do. My impression is that they are pretty "awesome" in their skills - and yet despite this they often need the help of others (Arista gets them out of prison in Crown and...actually there are two other cases where they are "locked up" and others get them out. I guess my point is that it's good that they are not "invinsible" and that they don't always "win the day".

Yes! Very good - and also th scene wher Thrace hugs Royce and I can just see him standing there all stiff and self-consious. Most people are afraid of Royce based on instinct but Thrace is too naive to know better.

Interesting...something that I never thought of....gotta keep this in mind as the last book plays out.
