Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Anti-Heroes--Gotta Love Them Challenge
Challenge Factory Group

For this challenge we will be focusing on the anti-hero. What makes an anti-hero, you ask? For the purpose of this challenge, our anti-heroes will:

► have imperfections that separate them from typically "heroic" characters (selfishness, ignorance, bigotry, etc.)

► have a lack of positive qualities such as "courage, physical prowess, and fortitude," and "generally feel helpless in a world over which they have no control"

► qualities normally belonging to villains (amorality, greed, violent tendencies, etc.) that may be tempered with more human, identifiable traits (confusion, self-hatred, etc.)

► noble motives pursued by bending or breaking the law in the belief that "the ends justify the means"

In the words of Tyler Durden, “All the ways you wish you could be, that's me. I look like you wanna look, I f--k like you wanna f--k, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not.” (Fight Club, 1999)

Levels of Difficulty:
Villain - 20 books
Scoundrel - 30 books
Desperado - 40 books

Rules/Guidelines:

*Do not begin reading early, you can only count books read during the challenge Duration: 01-01-12 to 06-30-12 (6 months)

*You MAY include re-reads as long as they are read during challenge time frame.

*You MAY change your Level of Difficulty at any time during the challenge.

*Please Update your original post that is linked in the Participants list, as well as updating with a new post occasionally. You can strike through finished books, check them off, rate them...etc. Keeping your completed number of books updated (example: 5/20 completed) is VERY helpful!☺

Level: Villain (20 books)
Update: 1/6
Completed: 2/20

1. Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs (Charles Cornick is his father's executioner. He has to kill people who threaten the werewolves in any way) 1/3
2. Spirit Bound by Christine Feehan (Stefan is a trained agent and assassin. He completes a mission by any means necessary, be it murder, seduction, or lying to the woman he loves) 1/5

Will post books as read

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments 2012 Chubby Chunkster Challenge

This challenge has been hosted in the past by Dana, and then spread over the net in various forms, now we're bringing it to RRRC. So what is the Chubby Chunkster Challenge, you'd ask? It's about reading those damn fat ass books that you've been avoiding, because, let's face it, short books work best for all the challenges, don't they? Well not in this case. And here are the rules for the 2012 Chubby Chunkster Challenge:

1. Definition of a Chunkster:

- A chunkster is 450 pages or more of fiction or nonfiction. A chunkster should be a challenge.
- If you read large type books your book will need to be 525 pages or more... The average large type book is 10-15% longer or more so I think that was a fair estimate.

[NOTE: if you read e-books, check the hardcover/paperback page count here on GR, it will give you the idea if the book counts]

2. The Rules:

- Audiobooks count.
- Re-reads are fine, as long as you don't skim or skip sections.
- Short Stories and Essay collections will not be counted.
- Books may crossover with other challenges.
- You can join in anytime, but you have till the end of the year to read it all.
- You don't need to list your books ahead of time.
- Once you pick a level, that's it...you're committed to that level!
- When you post your updates, put page count by each chunkster.
- If you completed a level before the end of the year and you want to sign up again, you're more than welcome to do so.

3. You must pick a level of participation:

- The Chubby Chunkster - this option is for the reader who has a couple of large tomes on their TBR list, but really doesn't want to commit to much more than that. 3 books is all you need to finish this challenge.
- Do These Books Make my Butt Look Big? - this option is for the slightly heavier reader who wants to commit to 5 Chunksters over the remainder of the year.
- Mor-book-ly Obese - This is for the truly out of control chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to 8 chunksters OR three tomes of 800 pages or more. You know you want to.....go on and give in to your cravings.
- Too Big To Ignore Anymore - this option is for those chunksters on your TBR list (honor code folk, I don't have time to be the challenge police). You may select any number of books over 450 pages but you must LIST THEM ahead of time.

Danielle's RRRC 2012 Chubby Chunkster Challenge
Level: Mor-book-ly Obese
Update: 3/2/12

Option C: The Most Dangerous Ones of All
For this challenge, all ten of your book choices must rate a 1 out of 10 (most dangerous hero of all) on the Dangerous Hero Scale. A number one has these qualities:
Completely lethal, seemingly remorseless, has no problem killing to get the job done, or killing as the job. Killing someone doesn't phase him. It's either him or them and don't let someone be after someone he loves. More or less amoral-except when it comes to things that have true value to him (like his heroine or his family). The mission is all that matters to him (at least until he falls for his heroine).
Completed: 5/10

2. Stefan Prakenskii from Spirit Bound by Christine Feehan 1/5
3. Jericho Barrons from Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning 2/1

Option D: Dangerous Hero World-Tour
This is a hold-over from last years’ challenge. Compile a list of fifty heroes from fifty different books that take place in fifty different locations. You may use a country more than once. You may not use a United State more than once. For example: You can use two locations in France, but you cannot use Paris or New York state (one city per state and one state per book, so if you use a book set in New York City, it means that you cannot use New York again) more than once. You can use fictional/mythical/otherworldly locations. Please note if the location is mythical in your listing.
Completed: 13/50
