Chelsea Denisse (chelseadenisse) My parent's are immensly religious and won't let me read books that they think are bad. Like for instance i want to read The Infernal Devices but they won't let me due to the word 'Infernal' in it. How can I persuade them into letting me read it?

saga (iyagi) well, the book knows the limits between good and evil. the main characters are on the good side, and the books have almost nothing to do with the infernal in the title. if anything is infernal it's the bad guy.

Chelsea Denisse (chelseadenisse) Well i try to tell my parents that but they still dont seem convinced

message 4: by saga (new)

saga (iyagi) well, have they read it?

Chelsea Denisse (chelseadenisse) Nope, they won't touch young-adult books. They only read the bible nothing else

message 6: by saga (new)

saga (iyagi) well, if they haven't read it they can't judge?

Chelsea Denisse (chelseadenisse) Well they judge it on the title and the summary

message 8: by saga (new)

saga (iyagi) what does it say in the summary? read it online sooo...

Chelsea Denisse (chelseadenisse) Well nothing bad but they can interpret anything into something horrible it just talks about Shadowhunters and Magic and stuff but my parents dont like stuff about magic (though sometimes they let me read books about it) and things about vampires (though they let me read Twilight) and stuff

saga (iyagi) well, for a first. you can tell them that shadowhunters are half angel people who makes it their lifejob to hunt down demons. it's not much about magic, only a single little warlock and just a vampire or two far-far in the back.. :):)

Chelsea Denisse (chelseadenisse) Thing is if i even say the word 'demon' they won't even let me look at the book ever again

message 12: by saga (new)

saga (iyagi) not even if the demons are the bad guys? well don't say demon then, say half angel :)

Courtney Yeah, this book definitely has more Angels then Demon's I think. And it's definitely no worse then Twilight, in any sense :) Just keep trying!

Rebecca Take yourself to the library my lovely, and realise that one day soon you will be able to read whatever you want. There is an amazing world of literature out there, just waiting for you. Don't worry, it will still be there when you are ready, be that 2 months or 20 years. That is the pure wonder of books. They have no time limit. I am truly sorry that your parents feel the way they do, and restrict what you can and can't read. You should always think before you speak, and always read before you think.
Good luck, I really hope you find a way to free yourself from your parents smallmindedness....

Kelsey (klocey) Little_miss_book_freak (I have yet to find out your name, I just noticed this thread!),

I understand your dilemma, I have friends whose parents didn't even want Harry Potter in the house because the spells are actually Wicca based, or so the rumors go. It depends on how old you are, but frankly, I started reading adult novels at an early age. My mother thought it would be best for me to learn about coming-of-age problems, issues that every teenager faces or has questions about, via literature. Thanks to my mother's open-minded attitude, I became a very open minded individual, whose life has been shaped by the variety of books I've had the pleasure of reading. Anyway, I think you should sit down with your parents and explain that Cassandra Clare is a very talented author (I'm only on the second book of The Mortal Instruments series, but I have heard great things about The Infernal Devices series!) and that she really does not put a grand emphasis on demons, sure they are mentioned, but if anything the books show a fine line between good and evil. In any religion, there are some form of angels and demons. And what better way to have a grander understanding of that then by reading this series? If your parents only ever read the bible, well, then they will never know other beauties within literature, you should encourage them to try reading a book that is outside of their comfort zone. Let them see that it isn't wrong, or even bad to read series like The Infernal Devices. I think if they have a more justified reason for you not to read the series in the first place, then you should try to see it from their perspective, but them simply judging the book by its cover, that is making matters worse. I would understand if they actually read a book by Cassandra Clare and deemed it too fantasy based, or whatever, but seeing as they only stick to the bible, and not much else, try encouraging them to branch out. If they branch out, they will be more lenient about what you read. In my own opinion if you are well above the age of fifteen, you should be able to read whatever you want, but that is merely a personal take. I hope this helps!
