Improving the group
Emma wrote: "Think that's allowed Margo. Do you know how much longer you'll be laid up?"I think it will be some time Emma, that's why I'm in bad form. Turns out I've been walking around with a fractured spine, a compression and some damaged discs. I've been complaining of back pain for 10 years and noone wanted to know til I got a new consultant who sent me for a scan.
4 weeks ago I had a pain block to tide me over til they ready to operate. That has driven the pain mad! They won't do anything for at least 2 mouths after the last procedure. All I can do is lie on the bed, sitting or standing is v. painful.
I'm like a bear with a sore head, and the drugs aren't helping.
Sara, I did not get it. I've checked my settings and I can't find any restrictions on it. I get PM's from others. It must be something with the group setting but I don't know what.
Well, I did some checking and I did find Sara's PM. In fact, I found Emma's messages there. I am just not getting notifications and apparently too lazy to check the messages on my own. My apologies to one and all. I will now check them regularly.

Margo I hope you feel better soon. Margo I don't think there are any wrong books to nominate , I know there certain novels I wouldn't nominate even though I would read them because it wouldn't appeal to the majority of the members.
I know I can get questions off the net about most of the novels I would nominate but selfish me wouldn't want to spoil the novel for me .
I think I will for the next few months second a novel I would be interested in reading .I will hold off nominating and see how it goes. I do like the idea of themes.
Apologies for my last few posts. I'm half out of my head with painkillers. Thanks to all the well wishers :-)

My son is reading The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
He reads mostly scifi/fantasy. He introduced me to GR but does not belong to any of my groups.

Its not my favourite Pratchett book but its certainly interesting. I prefer the later ones with less magic
I like the idea of theme months,New authors is a good category,
Females authors ,
Classics.
Translations.
Books made into films/TV
Also an interesting one may be first books of famous authors.
I saw a group do Female Protagonists by Male authors and then the opposite the next month.
They all sound good (except translations but thats just me lol). I suppose new categories could be proposed at any time. I'd like to see "disability" maybe as a one off. Maybe some seasonal topics like Halloween or Road Trips would be fun.
I don't know why Christmas books are so bad but they invariably are. Anyway journeys could work but maybe not mushy emotional journeys for me.
Now you say it I think avoiding seasonal nominations for Christmas might make more sense. I can count on one hand the number of Christmas themed books I've enjoyed and still have fingers to spare
What about making "cold or snow" the christmas theme, or jan theme. There's some wonderful books with snow plays a large part. If a ridiculous book wins we can a buddy read of something that sounds interesting.
I like the idea of book to movie adaptations. It gives you an excuse to watch the film.I have a couple but I don't know if they're proper themes:
Unreliable Narrators
Time Travel
Low-Rated books on Goodreads
Books with a colour in the title

Lorraine, I like your ideas. Unreliable narrators could be very interesting :-)

What I like about low rated books is that people are influenced by reviews. They might actually be good if people give them a chance.

Cphe wrote: "More like Santa sizzling at the BBQ"I dont like hot summers either. We get a lot humidity here which can be unbearabe.
Yes, I support moving to themed months.I like all the themes that have been proposed, very eclectic, but agree that we should stay from festivals. This includes the themes proposed by Kevin in the challange thread.
themed sounds interesting,Elderly Protagonist,
Child Protagonist,
Non-Human Protagonist (Animal, Inanimate, Alien...)
Food and Drink (fiction)
LGBTQ
Immigration

Sorry Emma. :-)
in order to do some of these themes being mentioned you'd nearly want to have the book read first before nominating it. would it reduce nominations then if themes aren't very general. just putting out the question, not saying I'm against it
Emma,I totally agree with your points. I like aligning the quarterly. I like having one to read. I think we all have enough reading commitments. I was going to stop there but I really like the idea of the poetry. I am not familiar with Irish poetry or really poetry in general. I would like to know more than Robert Frost. :). I think this is an excellent idea without an overwhelming time commitment. Good job.
I guess with the challenge added into the group we really have a lot on our plate with two quarterly reads but I will admit to liking having a choice of reading one or both . I'm not a big fan of poetry but I'm game to give it a shot
I like all of your ideas, Emma. It might get me to read poetry which I have never been a big fan of.
I like your suggestions Emma, but I have some additional thoughts about the quarterly poetry one. 3 months seems like an awfully long time to discuss just one poem. Maybe we could have a quarterly poet, and one of us co-moderators or the person who nominated the poet, could give a link to a starter poem from that poet, but then the thread could branch out from there with folks who were interested reading more than one poem by that poet. I'm also slightly worried that since not many people in the group are big Irish poetry people that we won't get a lot of nominations and voting.
I agree, Emma. I don't want to feel overwhelmed. Plus we also have the monthly read, the quarterly read and the challenge if desired. I think that's enough.
