Talk about it here. Please be kind and respectful, as this can be a touchy subject. Remember rule five: Be Open minded.

P.S. Stereotyping is assuming you know something about a person because of their color, looks or gender.

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments Stereotyping, i find that stereotyping is happening ALOT in our society/countries these days, smh, its depressing, coz people can think good/badly of one culture/set of people mostly the latter, they think badly of em, infuriating much, everyone different, no ones the same, well it depends on some things...but yeah

message 3: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) I find it ironic in cases where the stereotype is justified because people act exactly the way they do, and this reiterates the perception and fertilizes the stereotype further. People tend to take stereotype as the 'template' for a culture or community, and base their initial reactions to it, but ignorance should not be an excuse or barrier.

message 4: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments Exactly, people act on how they r perceived by other people, they think that just becoz people think of em that way, that they should be/do the same, but lots of people arent like that, and stereotyping still does occur, for example with cultures, hmm...or the colour of the hair, blondes...theyre dumb, thats how theyre perceived by many in society, coz thats how they were portrayed in the first place

message 5: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Agreed, but the thing is, stereotyping is not just practiced in ignorance, I myself do not rely on stereotype to shape the people around me, but I cannot get away from the fact, that to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the person, stereotype tends to generally be accurate. And as you say it's very hard, almost impossible to escape association.

message 6: by Just Deena (last edited Dec 19, 2011 08:10PM) (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments yeah it is, and even when u say u dont stereotype, sometimes...u do think it...u end up stereotypin, and then u think twice of what u just thought of that person and dismiss the thought of them being like that

message 7: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments and man ure good at writin speeches lol, smart haha

message 8: by Ross (last edited Dec 19, 2011 08:42PM) (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Heh thanks, it may help that I've been to University and gotten my Masters, just maybe:p

And you're right again, some people now try to be all politically correct(PC) and criticize things said or written previously as 'racist' or 'insensitive.'

Case in point, I'm a fan of Herge's Tin Tin, but the portrayal of native Congolese was very in keeping with Belgian colonialism, but that doesn't make the writer racist:)

message 9: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments wow, awesome, what did u get ure masters in? like what did u major in?

umm...would u get offended if i said that i didnt get any of that? haha, just the masters part, sorry, havent learnt any of that yet :p

message 10: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Lol that's OK Deena, I majored in English Literature:D

And Politically Correct people are the types who call Enid Blyton, who wrote many of the wonderful books I read as a child, racist because of how she portrays her black characters and servants.

message 11: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments No wonder! Ure English is like whoaa....like whoa, like amazing lol, good on ya

ohhhhhh now i know, how did she portray black people? was it really that racist that it caused PC people to tag her as a racist? what do u think?

message 12: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) I think it's wrong to label people my modern standards, at the time I'm guessing such attitudes were perfectly acceptable, it probably formed part of the cultural fabric of the time.

But I can't really say coz I don't remember her stories that much, and most of what I read tended to be about fairy folk and magical lands:p

message 13: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments I agree with every word of that, when u put it into that kind of perspective, i totally agree, couldnt have said it betta, it probably really was not racist at the time

lol, cute, i dont get how they can be racist, but whos to talk, ive neva read em, so yeah, is she still alive?

message 14: by Ross (last edited Dec 19, 2011 09:18PM) (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Yeah butEnid Blyton also wrote The Famous Five Series, and The Secret Seven, very much a teen series:) The FF have a series on Disney Channel lol, and if I recall them aright they were awfully' English':p

And she died in 68, you must have heard of Noddy yes? Well he was her character, and the folk of The Faraway Tree:)

message 15: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments really? neva heard of those shows, haha, 'awfully english' hilarious

Yep, i know Noddy, used to watch the show, but man, he was her character? wow, just learnt somethin new and neva heard of the other one lol, smart

message 16: by Ross (last edited Dec 20, 2011 04:53AM) (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Well the show doesn't go that far into the whole 'Old Boy', 'Chap' 'tally ho, rotten luck' blimey' spirit of the books:p, but the characters sound rather posh, from what little I've seen of it at any rate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enid_Bly...
It would appear that Blyton herself was the victim of some snobbery, notably from the BBC, tsk tsk shame on you Auntie Beeb:p

message 17: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments haha posh....dont like it lol

who's Auntie Beeb? lol, and hmm....yeah i read about 'negro' and how it means 'nigger' and the racial stereotypes, and i cant believe BBC turned her down,

Her stories...haven't much literary value. There is rather a lot of the Pink-winky-Doodle-doodle Dum-dumm type of name (and lots of pixies) in the original tales." thats just criticizing and bein way out of line, smh

Theres so many hash words goin off against her where im reading, i wonder what she thought of that

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate when people stereotype Asians, like they all look the same, all Asian names sound the same, all Asian countries are the same. They're obviously not.

And I so don't look like the little Korean girl in kindergarden, no matter what the people in my class say. I'm Chinese/Japanese. >.<

message 19: by Willis (new)

Willis | 5 comments I hate it. Last year I was a happy person wearing regular stuff and I made this poem about death. People started saying that i was a suicidal freak and stufff... Now some stuff happened over the summer and I started wearing black all the time. and people come right up tp me and ask "Are you goth?" I think its unfair that they just categorize people i different groups. But now what they called me last year is kind of true... but still. And some other people categorize me as "fake" as well. It really gets to me. It just sends me down a darker path. Sterotyping is unfair to everyone.

message 20: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Maybe it's because I come from a primarily Western background, but I tend to have trouble memorizing Chinese names, not that they look the same, it's just, different.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I know what you mean, and I get confused too, but like Chinese names are usually less syllables than Japanese, etc.

message 22: by Ross (last edited Dec 20, 2011 05:47PM) (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Actually I think I'd prefer the syllables, at least then it's more of a name and not a series of short sounds, but that's just because their names are arranged
different.

On a lighter note;
Stereotype; brand of radio.

Prejudice= to insult Judaism's method of worhip

haha yep, people stereotype Asians, with the 'all Asians r smart' i say that too lol :)

message 24: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Well in this instance not all stereotypes are negative, but they do create unnecessary pressure:p

message 25: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments haha that they do, thats what Asians r particularly known for...and their food :p lol oh and the CLOTHING! everythin we own is made in China or somethin lol

message 26: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) I think every piece of clothing anyone has has been to China at some stage lol.

message 27: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments lol true true, i agree, worlds biggest supplier, its takin over the world lol

message 28: by Ross (new)

message 29: by Just Deena (last edited Dec 20, 2011 10:24PM) (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments haha i already did, a million years ago lol, their population is increasing heaps! Its like wow, everywhere u look, ure bound to atleast find one Asian person infront of u

message 30: by Ross (last edited Dec 20, 2011 10:28PM) (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Heh if America continues to decline economically, it'll only be a matter of time, won't that be weird, we've been living in an American- dominated world order for as long as we know.

Speaking of racism and joking about stereotypes, has anyone on here seen Russell Peters?

message 31: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments haha ikr, it would, but technically, Australia's dominated by England, but if u think about the media and the celebrities and the movies and the video games, and the TV shows, America soo dominates the world withem

Nope,neva, who's he?

message 33: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) He's an American comedian, and his material consists of him joking about stereotype, you should check him out on youtube.

Example of his joke; Chinese and Indians are the worst to for a business venture; Indians are always looking for a cheap deal, Chinese can't give them one!:p

message 34: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments LOL! but isnt that true? haha, he's funny, i'll check him out

message 35: by Ross (last edited Dec 20, 2011 10:43PM) (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Eeep sorry, I deleted my comment coz I realised it wasn't really about stereotype, more of an anti-American/Western rant, my bad:(

message 36: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments Im watchin his impression of Chinese :p

message 37: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments Be a man! Do the right thing! LOL! i swear this guys hilarious, cant stop laughin coz everythin he said was true

message 38: by Ross (new)

message 39: by Just Deena (new)

Just Deena (invictusmaneo) | 43 comments haha yep, watched a few of his videos now, love him lol, really humorous, thanks 4 that

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) YES, Woolfie--Russell Peters is aweseome!

My brother introduced me to him last year; my favourite HAS to be the one about beating your kids. It's hi-larious!

WARNING: this pic is NOT meant to offend; it's just showing Peters' type of humour:

description

SORRY IF IT'S OFFENDED ANYONE

message 41: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) You're welcome Deena:)

Mel; yes his humour isn't for everyone, but I fail to see how it can possibly be offensive, if a stereotype is bad then people can try and change it, but it's very hard since perceptions of people, cultures and races become ingrained as they are the means by which people interpret the world around them.

In the next few years, China shall call America's debt... and we won't be able to pay.

Everyone say hello to the world's next largest ChinaTown.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

I rather like Chinatown, especially the one in San Francisco. Their food is very good and I love Chinese art and fabric - Oh Lord, the FABRIC. The brocade - I love it. It might be my Chinese blood, or my love for sewing... but I LOVE BROCADE. IT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY.

But yeah, Chinatown is cool. As long as I don't need to learn the language...

message 44: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) | 403 comments Let alone how to write Chinese. I think the language itself is not too difficult (except the speaking in different pitches for words that sound exactly the same otherwise), but all these signs... 50.000 or something, though you have to know 3.000 for daily use.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Did you know there's different words for aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa - it all depends on which side, and then there's a gajillion other nitpicky things like that.

message 46: by E.J., The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 606 comments Mod
I meant that America will soon be owned by China, but i like your ideas too, lol.

message 47: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) | 403 comments You know, I love languages. Chinese is one if those I want to learn. Maybe there´ll be a course in college. that´d be awesome!

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

But still... more Chinese food is not a bad thing... MOAR DIM SUM FOR KAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And more fabric! I should take up sewing again, considering I haven't made something in like two years even though I really like sewing and got a new sewing box.

OH. MY. GOD.

YOU GUYS - IMAGINE THE UNITED STATES. BUT INSTEAD OF OUR JUNKY AMERICAN FOOD, WE HAVE DIM SUM. AND WE HAVE MORE PRETTY THINGS MADE OUT OF PRETTY FABRICS.

THIS COULD BE A GOOD THING.

Just kidding. It's not.

Especially since they'd probably give us to North Korea 'cause they're buddies.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Y U HAV 2 RUIN MY DAY, EJ?!

Ehhh. I feel like I just lost IQ points from typing like that.

But yeah, we probably need to get ourselves out of this debt... though I do love dim sum...
